Global Newsletter – June 2021

Dear Friends and Supporters,

As many countries begin to return to life post-pandemic, there are still many others in the depths of it. Countries like Cambodia, the Philippines and Thailand have been no exception and, as we continue to serve them, we seek to take these challenges not as a setback but as an invitation for innovation to strengthen our programs.

As part of the Safety Delivered Program, supported by UPS and the UPS Foundation, we beat the odds by providing life-saving helmet measurement training for students and parents remotely. Teachers went ‘back to school’ virtually to safeguard their students' lives on the road, in the Philippines.

June was an extraordinary month for students, teachers and parents in Songkhla province, Thailand where the Chevron Street Wise program is equipping a new generation with road safety skills for life. Throughout Cambodia, we have continued to improve commuting conditions for vulnerable factory workers because no one should be forced to risk their life to put warm food on the table for their families.

It has been one month since the UN Global Road Safety Week. We are immensely honored to have worked together with the Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety, to advocate for #Love30 Our unified voice demanding #StreetsForLife was heard by an estimated 112 million people.

While the future still remains uncertain, what we can be certain of is the collective action and commitment of our team, partners, and donors whose steadfast support has helped millions of lives remain safe on their roads and beyond. To keep this global momentum going, we #CommitToAct.

Please read on.

Sincerely,

Mirjam Sidik

Improving commuting conditions for vulnerable factory workers day by day in Cambodia

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia – June 25, 2021

AIP Foundation team carried out assessments at targeted factories to assess safe zones and improve infrastructure.

As a primary care provider for your family, your ultimate goal is to make sure they are always fully cared for. However, no one should be forced to risk their lives to serve warm food at the table. This is the reality many factory workers in Cambodia face every day. Road crashes do not only impact the lives of workers, but also the lives of the two million family members they support. Throughout June, we have continued to save lives by promoting road safety among factory workers as part of the Prevention and Participation (P&P) program, supported by VF Corporation.

The Road Safety Working Groups (RSWGs) are essential in empowering factory workers through road safety education, training, and awareness-raising. To advance their work this month, our RSWGs received a training refresher remotely and an updated work plan. They demonstrated their steadfast commitment to promoting road safety skills for their workers. AIP Foundation met virtually with the management teams at the different factories to provide updates on the program and carried out safety assessments at targeted factories to improve the infrastructure. Factory managers shared their highlights of the safety training.

Over a three-year period from 2019 to 2022, 13 factories in high-risk provinces, including Phnom Penh, Kandal, Kampong Speu in Cambodia will be targeted with road safety policy advocacy campaigns and the formation of road safety working groups to increase awareness of the importance of commuting safety.

Reaching new generations of road users by expanding road safety program in Thailand

SONGKHLA, Thailand – June 11, 2021

June is gearing up to be an extraordinary month for students, teachers, parents, and staff at Woranari Chaloem School in Songkhla province. Not only is the school celebrating its 100th anniversary later this month, but it has also recently become the first secondary school in Thailand to join the Chevron Street Wise program.

The Chevron Street Wise program was introduced to the school director, followed by a discussion of proposed guidelines for the implementation of road safety activities. Chevron Thailand and AIP Foundation representatives excitedly welcomed the director’s decision where Woranari Chaloem School became the 12th project school in this area, highlighting the unwavering commitment of official local authorities to increase road safety throughout the province.

Mr. Anan Phudgate shared, “Woranari Chaloem School gives precedence to be a school of excellence and happiness for teachers and students. The Chevron Street Wise program will be a great benefit to the quality of life of students because they are teenagers who mainly use motorcycles. The problem we encounter is driving fast and violating traffic rules. This project will be a gift for the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the establishment of Woranari Chaloem School this year.” A community of 3550 students, 300 teachers, 4000 parents at his school will join the Chevron Street Wise program, receiving life-saving road safety training.

Chevron Thailand has partnered with AIP Foundation since 2015 to implement the Chevron Street Wise program to create a safer environment for road users especially young children through education, awareness-raising, and stakeholder and community engagement. The project has benefited more than 30,000 children, parents, teachers, and community members who have demonstrated improved road safety knowledge and skills.

“Back to school” resumes virtually with teachers in the Philippines safeguarding students’ lives

MANDALUYONG CITY, Philippines – June 25, 2021

Teachers go 'back to school' via Zoom for a life-saving training on road safety.

Day to day, school teachers have many tasks to juggle: teaching, marking, and lesson planning. However, ask any teacher and they will tell you that their most important responsibility is to protect their students from danger. In the Philippines, teachers were at the forefront of safeguarding their students’ lives through life-saving road safety training as part of the Safety Delivered program, supported by The UPS Foundation.

Dedicated teachers from Dona Basilisa Yangco Elementary School and Filemon P. Javier Elementary School were welcomed back as students via a Zoom classroom to learn practical skills on helmet and road safety. AIP Foundation also warmly welcomed the participation of Ms. Jenina Borrega Bublin, a representative from the Department of Education Mandaluyong City, and Ms. Cynthia Reyes, Advocacy Manager for the Automobile Association Philippines.

Teachers became the students as they gained knowledge on the global road crash crises and their roles and responsibilities in preventing their students from being unsafe on the streets. Inspired by the training, the teachers will promote road safety to their students by imparting the life-saving skills they learned. Just like teachers write tests for students to check their understanding, AIP Foundation developed a safety curriculum for teachers using the innovative Kahoot application, an interactive online quiz platform. Friendly competition flourished between the teachers as they hurried to provide the correct answers quickly to be ranked the best. The quizzes were the highlight of the training as teachers were motivated to engage in an interactive learning environment on road safety. Teachers are now better equipped to safeguard every student from the dangers of the road.

Safety Delivered is a program implemented by AIP Foundation to work with young, inexperienced motorcycle riders in India, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam by educating and eliminating distracted riding behavior, as well as increasing helmet use among children.

Road safety NGO beat the odds serving vulnerable communities during pandemic

MANDALUYONG CITY, Philippines – June 11, 2021

Students, parents and teachers receive life-saving helmet measuring training online.

Despite the pandemic still affecting communities worldwide, AIP Foundation has been able to beat the odds and continue to serve communities remotely. In the Philippines, parents, teachers, and students received life-saving helmet measuring training online, as part of the Safety Delivered program.

The online training event, hosted by AIP Foundation saw 190 students, parents, and teachers at two new project schools, Dona Basilisa Yangco Elementary School and Filemon P. Javier Elementary School, from Mandaluyong City, work excitedly together to learn how to be safer on roads. Ms. Nikki Ambion was present at the online training today marking the fundamental engagement of UPS in the Philippines, in delivering safety to the children of Mandaluyong city. In addition, AIP Foundation was thrilled to welcome the special participation of Ms. Jenina Borrega Dublin, representing the Department of Education of Mandaluyong City. All participants gained awareness of the importance of correct helmet use.

However, a helmet itself is not sufficient to provide full protection. It is of paramount importance that the helmet also fits the wearer perfectly. As the students are too young to measure their own heads, parents become a critical part of the training. This was the highlight of this online training, as parents and teachers were trained in how to correctly measure their children’s heads to ensure that the helmet will fit properly. For this, parents and their children had to work together and more than once, it led to many laughs as they learned how to be safe together. By ensuring that the helmets fit properly, we are maximizing the protection of each child. This way, when the children receive their helmets we know that they are fully protected from the dangers of the road.

Supported by UPS and The UPS Foundation, Safety Delivered is a program by AIP Foundation that works with young, inexperienced motorcycle riders in India, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam to educate and eliminate distracted riding behavior, as well as increase helmet use among children.
