Dear Friends and Supporters,

This month we celebrated the fifth United Nations Global Road Safety Week in Cambodia, China, and Vietnam with road safety advocates all over the world. We reached out to university students in Cambodia held a week of public awareness events for 1,600 students in Nanba, Sichuan Province, China, and engaged government and school administrators from 37 schools in Ho Chi Minh City to implement school zone modifications.

We also launched two new interactive and innovative programs in Vietnam including Safety with Moki, which combines education and entertainment to ensure students retain helmet and pedestrian knowledge, and our new child car seat initiative in Hanoi, which will teach parents how to protect their children with car seats and seatbelts.

For more information on our activities, achievements, and related road crash intervention news, please read on.

A student showcases his educational materials from the event

AA Vietnam and AIP Foundation, in collaboration with the Hanoi Traffic Safety Committee, have launched a new child car seat initiative at Nam Tu Liem Primary School in Hanoi. The launch event was held during the 5th United Nations Global Road Safety Week, attended by 800 primary school students and teachers.

Public awareness campaigns and education will be used to promote car seats and seatbelt use for children, specifically targeting the behavior and attitudes of parents. The initiative is modeled after FIA’s toolkit for child safety in cars, and will advocate for child seatbelt use and car seats to be included in Vietnamese law.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), road crashes in Vietnam cause an estimated 24,970 fatalities and more than 499,400 injuries each year. Children are particularly vulnerable: 1,900 children perish on Vietnam’s roads each year. Road crashes are the second leading cause of death for Vietnamese children between the ages of 5 and 14. The WHO reports wearing a seatbelt reduces the risk of death among drivers and front seat occupants by 45-50% and the risk of death and serious injuries among rear seat occupants by 25%.

In addition to parent training workshops and government advocacy, AIP Foundation will implement a social media campaign and install a series of billboards in busy traffic areas around Hanoi. The campaign will reach approximately 80,000 people.

AIP Foundation President calls for constant monitoring at FIA Conference 2019
1 May, 2019 – Sun City, South Africa

AIP Foundation President Greig Craft speaking at the FIA Conference.

AIP Foundation President Greig Craft attended the FIA Conference 2019 in Sun City, South Africa where he spoke of the need for thorough monitoring and reporting, using the two-decade long campaign for increased helmet use among motorcycle riders in Vietnam as an example.

After campaigning on the issue for many years, in 2007, Vietnam enacted a universal helmet law making the wearing of helmets mandatory. Since then, monitoring of uptake levels and safety improvements has been constant, enabling further data-led changes, such as the introduction of the mandatory use of helmets for children aged six and older.

In just over 10 years, $3.5 billion USD has been saved, half a million head injuries have been prevented, and 15,302 lives saved.

A mother and her daughter reflect on lessons learned from the workshop

Following the kick-off ceremony in early May, AIP Foundation and AA Vietnam educated over 70 parents on the importance of using seatbelts and child car seats at a workshop held at Nam Tu Liem Primary School. This parent education workshop is part of our new child car seat initiative, which is modeled after FIA’s toolkit for child safety in cars, and will advocate for child seatbelt use and car seats to be included in Vietnamese law. Professor Le Huy Tri, Vice President of Road Safety Research Center and the People's Police Academy helped to organize the workshop. Parents learned how to use and install car seats, as well as how to stay safe when transporting children in a car.

Walk This Way stakeholders review successful school zone modification milestones during UN Global Road Safety Week
12 May, 2019 – Ho Chi Minh City

AIP Foundation CEO Mirjam Sidik with FedEx Express Vietnam Senior Manager Doa Toan Thanh at the workshop.

AIP Foundation, as a Safe Kids Vietnam affiliate, worked with FedEx Express to celebrate the UN Global Road Safety Week with a workshop to present the milestones of the Walk This Way program.

Launched in 2009 and conducted by FedEx and Safe Kids Vietnam to increase awareness of child pedestrian safety and improve road user behavior, Walk This Way has reached more than 200,000 students from 315 primary and secondary schools across Vietnam, and donated helmets, reflective jackets and caps, pedestrian safety pencil cases, and pedestrian safety books to students.

In Ho Chi Minh City, AIP Foundation has led the installation of school zone modifications for Ket Doan Primary School, Mach Kiem Hung Secondary School, Pham Van Chi Primary School, and Hung Vuong Primary School, four of 37 program schools, based on their zoning needs. The modifications included installing sidewalks, yellow warning lights, and refuge islands as well as basic elements like school zone and pedestrian crossing signs and slow down markings.

The modifications were based on the findings of the International Road Assessment Program's Star Rating for Schools (SR4S), which helps rate the risks and safety of roads on a 1-star (least safe) to 5-star (safest) scale. These road upgrades led to an increase in the star rating of all four schools, ensuring a measurable improvement of the safety level offered to students on their way to the school. Post-modification results showed that all schools had at least a three or above, according to the SR4S ratings.

The workshop gathered representatives from the Ho Chi Minh City Traffic Safety Committee, Ho Chi Minh Department of Education and Training, and Urban Transportation Management Area 1 as well as from the selected and participating schools.

Related News: Thirty-seven school zones to be modified to ensure road safety
13 May, 2019 – Ho Chi Minh City

Mach Kiem Hung Secondary School, post-modification.

The roads around 37 schools in HCM City’s districts 1, 5 and 6 will be modified by next year to ensure they are pedestrian-friendly and safe for their students under the Walk This Way program. Of the 37 schools, Ket Doan Primary School in District 1, Mach Kiem Hung Secondary School in District 5 and Pham Van Chi and Hung Vuong Primary Schools in District 6 have been chosen to trial the modifications.

They include installing pavements, yellow warning lights and pedestrian refuge islands for pedestrians to safely wait for a gap in the traffic to cross the road. This makes crossing easier for pedestrians by allowing them to do so in two stages and deal with traffic from one direction at a time, according to the Road Safety Toolkit of the International Road Assessment Programme.

AIP Foundation launches innovative road safety 'edutainment' program
16-23 May, 2019 – Ho Chi Minh City

A program trainer with students during the road safety training session.

Our new school-based education program, Safety With Moki, sponsored by Mercedes-Benz, brought innovative road safety curriculum to the students of Le Van Tho Primary School in Ho Chi Minh City.

Ten Mercedes-Benz volunteers and a program trainer provided 30 minute in-class training sessions to all 22 classes comprised of 974 students using ‘edutainment’ (educational and entertainment) methods to hold students’ attention effectively. The training also included a series of educational challenges where students had the opportunity to win prizes such as helmets. The educational materials focused on safe helmet use and safe pedestrian behavior. After the training, all students received a road safety booklet reinforcing the live-saving knowledge they learned.

On 23 May, we held a closing ceremony that included the swearing in of Moki student road safety ambassadors and award distributions for the 110 students who received helmets by winning challenges during the training.
