Global Newsletter – May 2021

Dear Friends and Supporters,

This has been a truly memorable month for all of us as we immersed ourselves in worldwide celebrations marking the 6th UN Global Road Safety Week (UNGRSW).

As a guest speaker at the UNGRSW global launch hosted by the WHO and FIA Foundation, I shared our experiences implementing 30km/h speed limits and announced the construction launch of the road modifications in government school zones in Pleiku, Vietnam. Students and teachers at Vo Thi Sau Primary school participated in a drawing contest “my safe road to school”, to illustrate what safe roads means to them. This day represented an exciting opportunity for students, teachers and community members to raise their voice and advocate for 30km/h school zones. AIP Foundation staff in Cambodia and Thailand also expressed their support for UNGRSW and joined the campaign demanding low-speed streets.

We shared our knowledge and experience using Star Rating for Schools (SR4S) to assess school infrastructure and engage children and youths in the process of improving school zone safety at the Young Female Leadership on Sustainable Mobility - Saving lives through local and global action panel hosted by iRAP and YOURS.

Our Senior Project Officer, Ms. Sumalee Pratoomnun was selected as one of only five fellows for the first Global Road Safety Leadership Course Alumni (GRSLC) Fellowship Program. She will be part of an immersive experience that will continue to solidify her expertise on a global scale while enhancing road safety across Thailand.

Although UN Global Road Safety Week has officially come to an end, we continue to look forward and advocate #StreetsForLife around the world. This would not be possible without the continued support of our partners and supporters. The silent action of an exclusive one-of-a-kind Formula 1 (F1) tire signed by the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli sailing team is the start of an innovative new collaboration with Pirelli.

As the Walk this Way Program in Vietnam came to a close, FedEx received a certificate of recognition from the Traffic Safety Committee of Ho Chi Minh City, for serving more than 268,859 students from 315 primary and secondary schools across the country imparting road safety knowledge and skills.

As we jump into June, we are gearing up for the launch of our new #UnmaskMyths Global Giving campaign. This project will support the production of FDA-approved protective face masks by Protec, our social enterprise, for vulnerable communities affected by COVID-19. With your help, we can save lives today by clicking here.

If you haven’t done so already, you can still sign the open Letter calling for 30 km/h speed limits worldwide, bringing us closer to our vision of a world where people can live, walk and play without barriers.

Please read on.

Sincerely,

Mirjam Sidik

UN Global Road Safety Week 2021: A global celebration with a united message

Students at Vo Thi Sau primary school in Pleiku City, Vietnam express their support for #Love30.

From 17th May to 23rd May, countries around the world joined forces to pledge their support for the 6th Annual Global Road Safety Week (UNGRSW). The sad truth that still exists is that every 24 seconds another person is killed in a road traffic crash, but these crashes are preventable. UNGRSW is an opportunity for the world to call on policymakers at local and national levels around the globe to act for low-speed streets to enhance road safety and save lives.

The #Love30 campaign has been at the heart of this UN Global Road Safety Week. It advocates for streets for life where people live, work, and play by making 30 km/h (20mph) speed limits the norm for cities worldwide. Not only does a speed limit in urban areas prioritize the well-being of children and youth, but it also creates safe, healthy, green, and liveable cities.

This year, AIP Foundation participated and led several events to support and advocate for #StreetsForLife as part of UNGRSW. At the global launch, Mrs. Mirjam Sidik, CEO of AIP Foundation, discussed how 30 km/h speed limits worldwide will bring us closer to our vision of a world where all neighborhood streets are safe, with specific, proven examples in the Foundation’s program countries.

You can watch the full UNGRSW launch here:

Celebrating safe streets for life with our regional network in Thailand

AIP Foundation joined Chevron, Songkhla Heritage Trust, Rajamangala University of Technology Srivijaya, Songkhla Regional Observatory for the Public, Songkhla Public Health Office, and Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Regional Center 12 Songkhla to sign the open letter and participate in the UNGRSW photo campaign. The activities took place in the very special center of Songkhla Old Town of Muang. This center of the old town is a historical jewel where people and traffic mix. To keep the local community, tourists, and children safe, all organizations present advocated for #Love30 on the street.

Not only were representatives from the private sector proactive, 12 headteachers and school administrators from the Chevron Street Wise program in Songkhla and Nakhon Si Thammarat provinces joined the call to action demanding a 30 km/h safe school zone for their students.

Engaging local community through art in Vietnam

Under the Slow Zones, Safe Zones Program in Pleiku City, Vietnam, 31 program schools installed billboards in front of the school gates, calling on local community members to get involved and campaign for reduced speed when passing school zones.

Students and teachers at Vo Thi Sau primary school were immersed in a drawing contest to illustrate “my safe road to school.” Creativity flourished at the school as students painted their streets for life. This was an exciting opportunity for the students to raise their voices and call to action for 30 km/h school zones.

Schools and factories in Cambodia pledge their support for low-speed streets

In Bantheay Meanchey Province, AIP Foundation imparted road user skills to primary school students, where they learned how using their helmets correctly can make a life-saving difference. Students also drew pictures expressing their demands for safer streets by reducing speed limits to 30km/h in their school zone. Teachers further trained students online on the importance of speed reduction and road safety.

In Cambodia, in factories where AIP Foundation implements the Prevention & Participation Program, workers united to sign the open letter demanding 30km/h safe zones. The factory workers also gained further awareness on the importance of speed reduction through training.

Engaging our youth as part of a global solution

Ms. Minh Vo, Jr. M&E Coordinator at AIP Foundation, presented at the Young Female Leadership on Sustainable Mobility – Saving lives through local and global action panel hosted by iRAP and YOURS during The International Exhibition for Sustainable Mobility Solutions (Autonomy Digital 2.0). Ms. Vo shared her knowledge and experience using the advanced tool – Star Rating for Schools (SR4S) to assess school infrastructure and engage children and youths in the process of improving school zone safety.

Although UN Global Road Safety Week has officially come to an end, we continue to look forward and advocate #StreetsForLife around the world.

A message from the United Nations:

If you demand streets for life and #Love30 like we do, join the campaign to call for 30 km/h (20 mph) speed limits worldwide, on streets where people walk, live and play.

In 2022, world leaders will meet at the high-level meeting on road safety. Together we will bring a united message to demand streets for life.

Join us and sign the open letter here.

Pirelli raises funds for road safety charity in Asia

HO CHI MINH CITY, Vietnam—May 26, 2021

Pirelli donated an exclusive Formula 1 (F1) tire signed by all members of the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli sailing team.

Pirelli donated an exclusive full-size replica Formula 1 (F1®) tire with the Italian flag on the side signed by all 21 members of the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli sailing team that was valued at around $3,500 USD. Team Director, Max Sirena, and the two helmsmen Francesco Bruni and James “Jimmy” Spithill—who is the most winning Helmsman off all-time in America’s Cup history signed the tire.

Known as a leading tire producer and Global Tire Partner to the FIA Formula One World Championship™, Pirelli generously donated this one-of-a-kind collector’s item for the silent auction, with proceeds directly supporting AIP Foundation, a nonprofit organization delivering life-saving road crash interventions in developing nations across Asia.

The auction garnered international attention, with bidders across continents showing their support for Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Sailing Team, Formula 1, and AIP Foundation’s mission.

The winning bid was submitted by a racing fan from Italy, near Milan, who was moved to bid for the Formula 1 tire out of love for family.

The winner shared, “When I first heard about the auction, my thoughts immediately went to my big brother, who lives in a different country. I haven’t seen him since December 2019 due to the pandemic. Sports have always been a point of connection between us, and in the past few years, our common passion for the F1 world helped us keep in touch and strengthen our bond no matter the distance. The same happened with Luna Rossa; during America’s Cup race, he opened my eyes to something I hadn’t known at all, teaching me everything about this amazing world [of sailing] and making me fall in love with it.

I thought the F1, signed by the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli sailing team, could be the perfect gift to represent our brotherly bond. Plus, the fact that the auction was in favor of AIP Foundation gave me the right motivation to get this amazing item. It has really been a pleasure!”.

All proceeds went to AIP Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to decreasing road crash casualties in low- and middle-income countries by providing safety interventions to road users. AIP Foundation is a longtime partner of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), governing body of Formula 1 racing, and the FIA Foundation, supporting road safety initiatives globally.

This initiative marked AIP Foundation’s first collaboration with Pirelli and with the international sailing community. AIP Foundation is excited to connect with a new community with a shared passion for sport, mobility, and civic engagement.
