The Silent Killer
Carbon monoxide (CO), also known as the "silent killer", is a colorless, odorless and tasteless gas that can be harmful when breathed because it displaces oxygen in the blood, therefore depriving your heart, brain and other organs of oxygen. Exposure to large amounts of CO can result in loss of consciousness and suffocation. Although the effects of CO poisoning can be reversed if caught in time, permanent brain or heart damage could result.
If you or any member of your family begin to experience the symptoms (click to view) associated with CO poisoning seek medical care immediately. Before it's too late, though you should take precautionary measures to detect the presence of CO in your home.
Carbon monoxide can build up in your home when equipment or appliances are not working properly. To protect your family from carbon monoxide poisoning, it is important to have a service person check appliances on a regular basis.
Another easy way to protect your family from carbon monoxide poisoning is to install CO detectors around your home, especially close to bedrooms. If the alarm sounds, be sure to exit your home and call 911. Do not enter the home until it is safe to go back inside.

With the furnace cranked up, fireplaces burning bright, candles leaving the scent of gingerbread around the home, and all those Christmas lights brilliantly shining, a fire could start at any moment. But you don't want to ruin the holiday spirit worrying about if a fire will start; so be prepared and relax this holiday season.
To make sure your home is properly equipped to stop a fire when it starts, make sure you have plenty of smoke detectors in your home. Smoke detectors should be placed near all sleeping areas, at the top of each stairway, and at the end of each hallway. If placing a smoke detector in the kitchen, position away from cooking areas, and be sure to
keep detectors away from fireplaces or woodstoves to avoid false alarms.
Your home should also be well equipped with fire extinguishers. There are different types and classes of fire extinguishers, but dry chemical extinguishers are suitable for A, B, and C fires. Although dry chemical extinguishers can leave a mess, when in the position take the mess over the fire!
Location is most important for fire extinguishers. You should keep an extinguisher on each level of your home, in an area that is easy to access quickly in case a fire breaks out--near the door is best. Also, extinguishers should be located in areas where fire is most likely to break out, such as the kitchen, garage and basement.
Now that you are prepared in case a fire does start, sit back and relax knowing that you and your family are safe.

Radon Mitigation
Radon, much like carbon monoxide, is an odorless, colorless and tasteless gas. According to the EPA, every state in America has high levels of radon. As radon seeps into your home through surrounding soil, your family could be exposed, increasing the risk of developing lung cancer.
Luckily, radon is easy to detect, and homes with high
levels can be fixed. You just have to make the first move to get your home tested. You can purchase inexpensive testing kits at your local hardware store for short-term or long-term testing. Just purchase the kit, and after testing send the kit in to the manufacturer for analysis. The good news is that the price of most kits includes the analysis cost! Visit www.epa.gov/radon/radontest.html to find a kit that is manufactured by a qualified company.
If you find your home does have high levels of radon, you will need to contact a qualified service professional to fix the problem, or you can reduce the radon levels on your own. For a great how-to radon mitigation video with step-by-step instructions go to: www.thisoldhouse.com |
