The United States was awarded the honor of hosting the U.S.A World Cup Pentathlon for the Olympic sport of Modern Pentathlon. Host cities are Palm Springs, Palm Desert and Rancho Mirage. Each year, the UIPM awards five World Cup events to cities around the world, with athletes earning qualifying points for the World Cup Final and Olympic Games. The prestigious event is scheduled for Feb. 24-27, 2011. Modern pentathlon is an Olympic sport comprised of five disciplines: épée fencing, swimming, equestrian show jumping, and a combined run/shoot event. The sport was developed for the first modern Olympic Games in 1912 by the founder, Pierre de Coubertin. This event will be headquartered at the Agua Caliente Casino Resort Spa in Rancho Mirage, which will also play host to the opening and closing ceremonies. Individual events will be held at the Equestrian Center International in Rancho Mirage; The Palm Springs Swim Center with Electronic Scoring; and the Xavier College Preparatory High School in Palm Desert where the épée fencing will be held.
