Alpha Alpha Omicron Chapter at Longwood University Goes to Haiti

Alpha Alpha Omicron Chapter at Longwood University in Farmville, Virginia, traveled overseas to serve those affected by the earthquake in Port au Prince, Haiti.

On December 15, 2013, Alpha Alpha Omicron Chapter took a week-long trip to Port au Prince, Haiti. Brothers provided service to the Source of Light orphanage. They painted the walls, laid tile and built dividers to create office spaces. The orphanage houses 28 children and also offers schooling to those inside and outside of the orphanage.

Additionally, chapter members had the opportunity to spend time with the children in the orphanage during their visit. It was an amazing experience! They took the children to a zoo and playground and treated them to french fries and soda, which some kids had never had before.

Is your chapter already getting ready for the 43rd Biennial National Convention in Chicago, Illinois? Are you focused on staying in good standing? Stay on top of chapter business as you continue through the spring and fall semesters. Chapter management should be an ongoing process and is necessary in helping your chapter prepare for the Convention. Periodically check the Chapter Officer Portal to ensure the chapter doesn't have any outstanding invoices that need to be paid, update membership rosters, report service projects, transition officers, etc. Chapter that are not in good standing will not have the option to have a voting delegate(s) on the Legislative Floor.

Bureau of Labor Statistics Reports 10-year Low for Volunteerism in the U.S.

Volunteering fell to the lowest rate in 2013 since the government has been measuring it, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Tuesday.

Roughly 62.6 million Americans volunteered through or for an organization at least once between September 2012 and September 2013, according to the BLS, or about 25.4 percent of adult Americans.

In 2002, the first time that the BLS conducted its survey on volunteerism, the rate was 27.6 percent. The decline last year was also a 1.1 percentage point drop from 2012.

Volunteerism has declined in each of the past three years. But it isn't clear whether the decline last year marks a broader trend away from volunteerism or an aberration. It also isn't apparent what might have caused Americans to volunteer less.
