Welcome to our inaugural bi-monthly Alternative Communication Services ACS) Newsletter!
Every other month ACS would like to make contact with you to give you an up-close and personal look at the accommodations we provide to persons who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing. We want this to be an interactive process where you can ask our subject-matter experts anything you want about the accommodations we provide. We will never share your email address nor will we bombard you with spam.  If you decide that these newsletters are not for you, you have the option to opt out at any time using the link at the bottom of this email.
Accessible Professional Development Webinars & Meetings

Are you using WebEx, GoToMeeting, Adobe Connect and/or Blackboard E-lluminate for professional development (PD) meetings and trainings?  How would someone who is deaf or hard of hearing participate? PD meetings and trainings using these and other platforms can now be made accessible through remote captioning and video remote interpreting.

According to the Hearing Loss Association of America and the Center for Disease Control. 1 in 6 people in the workplace have a hearing loss significant enough to affect their ability to communicate effectively in challenging listening situations.  Web-based meetings, conference calls, and trainings can be very challenging listening situations for the person with hearing loss. It is important to be aware that the ADA as Amended in 2008 and the Communication and Video Accessibility Act of 2010 mandate that persons with hearing loss have equal access to effective communication regardless of the manner in which the information is transmitted: face-to-face or by video or over the Internet. ACS Charitable Giving Program

ACS supports a variety of organizations dedicated to people who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing with cash donations, discounted services, in-kind service donations, conference sponsorships, and conference exhibits/ displays.  ACS believes in giving back at both the national and the local level.

We recently enhanced our committment to philanthropy in January 2013.  In an effort to give back by supporting good causes meaningful to its employees, Alternative Communication Services (ACS) LLC began donating a portion of its profits to charitable causes supported by its employees. Creating a culture of giving makes us a better company. We believe allowing and empowering our associates to be active participants in philanthropy goes beyond what is normally experienced during the workday. We find that our pride in who we are as a company increases and we are inspired to work even harder.  It is not the amount that we give that is so important, for even small amounts can have great impact on a struggling charity.  What is important is the act of giving and the bility of ACS' matching donation to increase the overall impact of the gift. Click here to read more on the Charitable Giving page of the ACS website

You can learn more about how to create a culture of giving in your organization by consulting Alessandra Cavalluzzi’s excellent article How to Create a Culture of Giving in the April 2013 issue of HR Magazine. For assistance please email Valerie@ACSCaptions.com

ACS Team Member Spotlight - Luke Boudreau

This month the ACS Team Member Spotlight shines on Operations Assistant Luke Boudreau.  Luke helps the Operations Department with the scheduling of captioning and sign language interpreting services for persons who are deaf and hard of hearing.

Luke was born in Halifax Nova Scotia and moved to the Chicago area twelve years ago.  He graduated from Waubonsie Valley High School and is enrolled in college, studying to be a physical therapist. Luke’s favorite college courses so far have been Anatomy & Physiology. He expects to graduate in 2018 with his Physical Therapy degree.  After graduation, he would like to learn the ropes by working with an established physical therapy practice, in hopes of one day owning his own practice.

As one would expect from someone who wants to be a physical therapist, Luke enjoys an active life.  When not working or going to school, Luke’s favorite things to do are playing hockey, dirt-biking, and hanging out with friends. He usually manages to squeeze in a pick-up hockey game at least once a week.

Dirt-biking is pretty much confined to the summer months, but he goes 3-6 times per month when the weather’s warm enough. Time with friends is important and  happens at least every other day.

Luke’s work with ACS is hectic and demanding, as is his college schedule. He says the work has opened his eyes to the challenges faced and overcome by fellow students who are deaf and hard of hearing, in large part because of the services ACS provides. He has gained an appreciation for what it is possible to achieve, in school as well as in work and life, if a person is adaptive.  We are all about empowering adaptation and achievement at ACS and we are very happy to have Luke on our team.

Please be sure to tune in for the next issue of the ACS Team Member Spotlight.
