2011 Atlantic Regional Meeting

This year, our Atlantic Regional meeting will be on board the USCG Barque EAGLE on April 9th. Click here for a Map and Directions.

We have a great agenda lined up. Keep reading for some of the highlights:

  • Sail Training International's Self Assessment Toolkit- An overview and workshop.

  • Navigating the Regulatory Seas - Updates on a variety of issues from the ASTA Ship Operations & Safety Committee.

  • Working with Volunteers - A continuation of the presentation from our November conference. Capt. Simon Colley (Spirit of Bermuda), Capt. Richard Dorfman (Schooner Pioneer), and Claudia Bankert (US Brig Niagara) will be presenting again.

  • Focused Topic Discussions - These are your suggestions. If you would like to be added to the schedule, please contact Lori (lori@sailtraining.org).

ASTA travels to Washington, DC to talk tall ships

Global friends of sail training came together on March 9th in Washington, DC at the American Sail Training Association's (ASTA) annual naval attache reception hosted by Senator John Kerry. Held in the U.S. Capitol's former office of the Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson, members of the U.S. Coast Guard were joined by naval representatives from Canada, United Kingdom, Ecuador, Sweden, Oman, Belgium, India, Italy, Pakistan, Germany, Mexico, Chile, Colombia and Argentina, along with representatives of our Port Partners. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse and Senator Jack Reed, our Rhode Island representatives,  made seperate addesses to the attendees to announce the TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE® Race Series on the Atlantic Coast in 2012 and the Great Lakes in 2013.

Port Partners in the News

Navy Pier's Pepsi®Tall Ships®Chicago 2010 won the "Best Event or Festival" Illinois Excellence in Tourism Awards this March. The awards recognize innovative tourism, promotional and marketing initiatives from across the state. Click here for press release.

GoErie.com, the website partner for the Erie Times-News, announced in March that it had won four awards in national competition. One of them, coverage of the Tall Ships® Erie festival last September , received a first place award of an event or issue. USCG Barque Eagle Celebrates 75 Years
In celebration of her 75th anniversary, Eagle is taking the Summer Training Cruise across the Atlantic. Click here for the full schedule. Their goal is to 7,500 fans follow along with the crew so follow this link to the Eagle fanpage on Facebook and support America's Tall Ship!

Crossing the Bar: George Shupp
Photographer and longtime volunteer with the Bayshore Discovery Project, George helped with the early restoration of the A.J. Meerwald. An avid boater, lighthouse enthusiast, and lover of anything maritime, he will leave behind an incredible legacy within the Bivalve community.

Maine Maritime Waterfront Expo-Saturday, April 9th
The day-long event will celebrate the 90th birthday of the college's historic schooner Bowdoin, and the beginning of the schooner's upcoming sailing season. The public is invited to attend the festivities on the waterfront campus, lcoated at the base of Main Street in Castine. Keep reading...
