Global Consultation on Music & Missions

Dr. Stan Moore, Senior Fellow and Professor of Church Music and Missions, spent ten days during the month of July in Singapore where he attended the third Global Consultation on Music and Missions (GCoMM). Dr. Moore's account of the congress follows:

"Christian leaders from over 30 countries came July 4-7 to participate in GCoMM Asia 2010. Over 350 registered for the consultation, but many more were in attendance especially in the evening sessions. The meetings were a remarkable time of worship, inspiration, teaching, and discovering how music, creative arts, and multimedia can be used in missions. The event was sponsored by Singapore Bible College and the Bartley Christian Church, and was led by a capable and dedicated local steering committee.

Through the generosity of several sponsors, we were able to grant scholarships for people who did not have the resources to attend. This support allowed people from Africa, Pakistan, Jamaica, and several countries in Asia to participate in this event.

The consultation began on Sunday night at the Bartley Church where nearly 500 were in attendance. I had the privilege of presenting the first plenary address that night on the topic: "Biblical foundations for Creative Arts in Missions." We were led in worship by Izibongo, a music ensemble that translates and sings Christian music in national styles from around the globe, using indigenous instruments.

The concluding service on Wednesday evening was a multi-cultural celebration of the diverse artistic gifts used for missions. Christian performers from around the globe sang, played, danced, and used multimedia as expressions of faith and as means to share the Gospel in various cultures. The experience was breathtaking and a powerful reminder of God's creativity through His people and love for all His creation. It was also a glimpse of heaven as we celebrated the unity we have in Christ in the midst of our cultural, linguistic, and stylistic diversity. Our final act of worship was the celebration of the Lord's Supper.

Please visit the GCoMM website at  http://gcommhome.org to find more information. May the Lord continue to use the GCoMM meetings to glorify His name and to edify and encourage Christian artists throughout the earth to use their artistic gifts to disciple the nations!"
ACCREDITATION UPDATE

Carroll Institute's self study and annual report will be submitted to ABHE on November 15. The Institute appreciates your prayers during this process. BHCTI will be represented at ABHE's 64th Annual Meeting in Orlando, Florida on February 23-26.

 BHCTI in CUBA

During the week of October 9-6, a group representing Carroll Institute traveled to Camagüey, Cuba to participate in a week of intensive seminars with Cuban students who are seeking master's degrees through the Institute.  Dr. Bruce Corley, President of BHCTI taught Theology of the New Testament; Dr. Bill Bryan, Resident Fellow and pastor of Old Greenbrier Baptist Church in Alderson, West Virginia, taught Theology of the Old Testament; Dr. Adlin Cotto, Coordinator of Carroll's master's program in Cuba and Tarrant Baptist Association Ethnic Ministry Consultant, along with her husband, Roberto Cotto, served as translators and facilitators.

Dr. Bill Bryan (on the left in the photo below) shares some of his experiences during that week:

"It was an exhausting but successful week. I was greatly encouraged by the strength of the  Baptist churches in Cuba. While Cuba is quite impoverished economically, the Spirit of God is alive and thriving among our Baptist brothers and sisters. This is exemplified in the ministry of Pastor Abel González (in the photo above) of Primera Iglesia Bautista. Abel gave up a career as an electrical engineer to enter the Baptist seminary. He has overcome many obstacles and trials. He pastors a thriving church in the heart of Camagüey. His church was our host for this week of ministry.

Dr. Bruce Corley and I led courses for fifty-eight master's level students. Fourteen of these students have now completed all course work for the Master of Arts in Theology degree. BHCTI hopes to award these degrees next year after the students complete their master's theses or projects. The remaining students will complete course work over the next two years, Lord willing, through further trips by other B. H. Carroll professors.

These degrees are significant because they represent, to our knowledge, the first internationally accredited master's degrees in theology that have been granted in Cuba in nearly sixty years. Our prayer is that from this group of students will come a dozen or so who will pursue doctorates and will serve as faculty for training the coming generations of Cuban pastors and church leaders. Keep praying for these students as they finish their degrees and continue to do great kingdom work in the midst of many obstacles from the government and a general lack of resources."

MORE MISSIONS NEWS

Greg Jones, a Carroll Institute M.Div. student and member of First Baptist Church Bryan, Texas, has been invited by the President of the Union of Free Evangelical and Baptist Churches of Estonia to work among international students and their families and to begin an English-speaking international church in Tartu, Estonia. His wife, Dee, is a practicing counselor and would also work with international students. They would have opportunities for teaching at the Baptist seminary in Tartu. Greg's recent letter to Carroll Institute follows:

"Over the last three years, I have had to the opportunity to grow and learn personally under many of you as I work towards completing my Master’s of Divinity degree. I am extremely grateful for the vision of B. H. Carroll and the leaders of this institution to make theological education more accessible and available to people in their current areas of ministry. I am so much better equipped to face the challenges of ministry compared to where I was three years ago.

I want to take this opportunity to inform you how God is working in the life of my family and where we sense him leading. There is no doubt in our minds that God has given us the tools to have a long successful ministry career somewhere in Texas. However, we also realize that he has given us the tools to take the gospel into those hard places in the world and use us to transform individuals and cultures for the sake of his Kingdom. We would not have envisioned a scenario of how this would take place when we sensed God’s call to the ministry almost four years ago, but God led us on a short-term mission trip to the tiny eastern European country of Estonia. Over the last four years, our relationship has continued to grow and develop as we reach the Estonian people. My wife and I have taken in all five trips to Estonia through FBC – Bryan. We have established a strong relationship with Salem Baptist Church in the city of Tartu and we are first-hand witnesses of how God is revealing himself in a once godless culture. . . People are responding to the gospel, but many do not feel empowered to use the gospel to change their culture.
This past summer, we were approached by the pastor of Salem Baptist Church, Tartu, Estonia. He expressed a strong desire for my family to use our privilege and influence in Estonia to help transform a culture through the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Our blog has more details and it includes video interviews and an audio recording of how God has brought us to this point - gregdeejones.blogspot.com. Above all, we really appreciate your prayers as we minister in an intellectual and spiritually hungry part of Eastern Europe! You all have been a blessing to me over the past three years!
