As Holy Week is celebrated around the world, the Senior Fellows and Administrative Staff of B. H.   IS THERE LIFE AFTER ACCREDITATION?

The Senior Fellows and Arlington Hub Administrative Staff pose proudly with the accreditation plaque. Their smiles represent joy and thanksgiving after many prayers and years of hard work toward being granted accreditation. Other Hub personnel not present for the photo, Amanda Crane (Lubbock, TX) and Don Day (Nashport, OH), worked tirelessly from their offices as part of the coordinated effort. Carroll Institute is grateful to the Lord, faculty and students, and to the "Friends of Carroll" who have so faithfully supported the Institute during this time.

The granting of accreditation, however, is not the end of the process. The Institute will continue to review the ABHE standards and address concerns dealing with compliance and assessment of institutional effectiveness. A progress report will be submitted in the fall in addition to the annual report. Carroll Institute must continue to meet comprehensive integrated standards for reaffirmation within five years. The Hub staff covets your prayers as they work daily to provide academic excellence in theological education and train Christ-centered leaders for ministry.

SPRING 2012 COLLOQUY

WILL FEATURE RAIMUNDO CESAR BARRETO

Dr. Raimundo Barreto, Director of the BWA Division of Freedom and Justice, will be the guest lecturer for the Spring Colloquy, May 21 - 23, 2012. Dr. Barreto holds a doctoral degree in Christian Social Ethics from Princeton Theological Seminary as well as degrees from the McAfee School of Theology at Mercer University and from the North Brazil Baptist Theological Seminary in Recife.  He also studied at the International Baptist Theological Seminary in Prague, Czech Republic.

Barreto has worked extensively in academia in Brazil and in the United States. He has also conducted research on Christian and social justice issues in Latin America and has a special interest in working with organizations focussed on human rights, and in advocating for those who have special needs.

Prior to joining the BWA, Barreto was pastor of Igreja Batista Esperança (Hope Baptist Church) in Salvador, Bahia, and was General Coordinator for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Social Ethics in Brazil.

The BWA Division of Freedom and Justice was created in 2008 by the BWA General Council and Dr. Barreto was named its first director in March 2010.The Division addresses issues of human rights and religious freedom and serves as BWA liaison with the United Nations where the BWA holds membership in several of its agencies.

Responding to the invitation to speak at the Spring Colloquy, Dr. Barreto commented, "I have a passion for education, which is also part of my call. I used to dedicate part of my time to teaching when I was living and working back in Brazil. Your school seems to be a vibrant, dynamic and mission-oriented learning community. It will be a delight to have the opportunity to interact with this wonderful and diverse group of students and faculty. I believe that new schools with this kind of spirit are at the cutting edge in contemporary theological education."

Barreto will speak on issues such as Religious Liberty, Human Rights, Social and Environmental Justice, and Peacemaking. Since this year is the celebration of the 400th anniversary of Baptist pastor Thomas Helwys’ Mystery of Iniquity (1612), the first defense and declaration of Religious Liberty in the English language, Dr Barreto will include that topic in one of the sessions. He will also deliver the Convocation address on May 22.

Carroll Institute invites you to be a part of the Spring Colloquy and take advantage of the opportunity to hear this experienced advocate in the field of human rights speak on topics that are of critical importance in today's society.
