For Some... The Weight is Over

Since the days of Jack LaLane in the 1950's, the conversation about health and fitness in the United States has centered around a discussion of what we weigh. Weight loss, weight gain, weight plateaus, weight maintenance and so on. Weight loss has become big business, and over the past 50 years many companies have profited handsomely by repeatedly offering hollow solutions to the under-motivated.

But at the same time, an unprecedented and powerful phenomenon is taking place among a small yet growing minority of Americans. Beneath the clamor of tired excuses for why "It's not my fault," there is an emerging segment of Americans who see physical fitness as a means of proving to themselves and others that the American spirit is alive and well. For them, the weight is over.

While most Americans search for excuses for their misbehaviors at McDonalds, these pioneers of the 21st century have recognized that survival of the fittest has given way to survival of the smartest, and that true prosperity in this age of caloric abundance will belong to those who demonstrate the discipline and self-reliance that formed the very bones of our great country.

ANTIDEPRESSANT USE SOARS 400%
Use of antidepressant drugs has soared nearly 400% since 1988, making the medication the most frequently used by people ages 18-44, a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows. Eleven percent of Americans ages 12 years and older took antidepressants during the 2005-08 study period, the authors write.

AMERICANS TALK SKINNY, EAT FAT
In a country where more than two-thirds of the population is overweight or obese, food choices are often made on impulse, not intellect. So, while 47 percent of Americans say they’d like restaurants to offer healthier items like salads and baked potatoes, only 23 percent tend to order those foods, according to a survey last year by food research firm Technomic.

DEUTSCHE BANK'S RICHARD BYRNE... ONE BAD-ASS BANKER
At first glance, Richard J. Byrne, the chief executive of Deutsche Bank Securities, doesn’t look much like a warrior. Mr. Byrne has become something of a mixed martial arts evangelist on Wall Street. And he reports that the Zen-like skills required for fighting have helped him in other areas. "If I’ve learned one thing, it’s the ability to relax under pressure," he said. “It’s definitely made me a better banker.”

YOUR FAMILY'S HEALTH CARE COSTS: $19,393
Health care costs for a family of four rose again in 2011, with employees paying a much larger share of the rising expenses, according to a new industry report Wednesday. American families who are insured through their jobs average health care costs of $19,393 this year, up 7.3%, or $1,319 from last year, according to independent actuarial and health care consulting firm Milliman Inc.
