“The National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace (NSTIC) charts a course for the public and private sectors to collaborate to raise the level of trust associated with the identities of individuals, organizations, networks, services, and devices involved in online transactions” -
excerpt from the April 2011 White House publication on NSTIC.
Microsoft has been facilitating a
Cross-Sector Digital Identity Project Proof of Concept (POC) in order to demonstrate public/private interoperability within a NSTIC system that reflects core guiding principles for securing transactions on the Internet, improving the public’s awareness and control of personal information, and stimulating the growth of online commerce.
Key guiding principles suggest NSTIC solutions be:
•
Secure and resilient
•
Interoperable
•
Privacy enhancing and voluntary for the public
•
Cost-effective and easy to use
The goal of this POC is to learn how to mature and optimize the architecture for a future pilot and eventual broad-scale production deployment. The analysis will investigate the readiness of technology, maturity of business models, social acceptance, policy coverage and usability.
Key participants include major public corporations, federal government agencies, state government agencies and private businesses.
Biometric Signature ID (BSI) has been invited to participate using our BioSig-ID™ product as a software-only “gesture biometric” used for online “authentication” of the individual as a higher assurance identity proofing technique used in addition to existing pins, passwords, tokens, PIV cards, PIV-I cards, CAC cards and other identity tools which can be hacked, stolen or shared.
The findings from this work are targeted to be published with suggested areas for improvement in the Spring of 2012.
