This month I want to recommend an amazing educational resource book. I have gotten a lot out of reading it!
Be the Media is a “How-To” book that covers the new ways of creating and distributing content across almost every major media field – publishing, music, video/film, radio, licensing, and online (blogs, podcasts, syndication, etc). Part One emphasizes sustainable media business models for individuals. The book also applies to more than just media “creatives” – it has lessons for solo-entrepreneurs, the self-employed, small business owners, non-profits, corporations, activists, and even politicians too – anyone with a message to share!
The second part of the book teaches people how to create community and non-profit media, such as community newspapers, radio, and TV, how to use alternative forms of copyright such as Creative Commons, and how to get involved in the telecommunications policy issues that affect us all (such as net neutrality and media ownership concentration, etc). This second half could be considered a “policy book disguised as a How-To.” :-D
