Welcome to our new CYA e-post!

I would like to introduce to you CYA's new electronic communication medium, the e-post. While not replacing The Owl, our beloved alumni newsletter, each e-post edition will bring you several times a year short notices that highlight new developments, events and things of interest to the CYA community.

Greece, as I am sure you are aware, is going through some rough economic times, currently plowing through legislation on a series of reforms that would bring her to the road of recovery with the aid of its European and International lenders. Despite the heavy climate of political and economic uncertainties here in Greece, morale at CYA is high, and so is student participation. This summer we had over 100 students coming through our doors on various summer programs, and we are now preparing for the arrival of more than 140 students in the fall. CYA has weathered many difficult situations, including two military coups, as several of you may remember well. Mere financial instability will not daunt CYA, nor will it keep our students from experiencing the best semester of their lives.

A Permanent Home for Our Student Union
After years of moving and occupying various rented spaces, the CYA dining room/student center has finally found a permanent home. As a result of the generous support of George and Daphne Hatsopoulos and Anne and James Rothenberg and the tremendous response to a major fund drive CYA has recently been able to purchase the ground floor of its Academic Center at 5 Plateia Stadiou next to the Panathenaic (Kallimarmaro) Stadium in Pangrati - truely a wonderful addition to the CYA campus which besides providing a dining hall also gives students a place to get together to study or relax and socialize after hours.

New Optional Study Trips Outside of Greece
As part of its mission of expanding learning beyond the classroom, CYA has added optional trips to the services provided for students. Each semester CYA students have have 3 optional study trips to choose from.

This past academic year, two new destinations outside of Greece were added; Cyprus was added in fall and Barcelona was added to the spring options. Although these trips are optional they tie in with specific courses offered in the same semester. The Barcelona trip was especially interesting to students taking the course on urbanism and sustainability, and the Cyprus trips gave an added dimension to those taking the course on peace and conflict in the Mediterrean region.

Keeping Up with a Changing World

In order to better serve the needs of our students and to take advantage of unique features of our location and surrounding environment, CYA has expanded its curriculum with the addition of 3 new academic disciplines and new courses in communications, economics, and urbanism and sustainability..

The course on the "Greek Crisis" is now team taught by an authority on EU politics and by an economist. The offerings in urbanism and sustainability take advantage of major developments in Athens at old Ellinikon Airport, the Niarchos Culteral Center and the Onassis Foundation project, ReThink Athens. A new communications course will look social media and its effects.

The July/August 2015 Business Partners magazine featured an article by Alexis Phylactopoulos, President of CYA, in which he discusses the vast benefits that Greece would gain with a focus on international education.
