How to Calculate Driver Turnover Rates and Improve Your Bottom Line in 2018

By: Ray Haight (Columnist)

Do you want to make more money in 2018? I guarantee you will make far more money getting your driver turnover in line than you ever will growing your fleet while you still have high turnover.

In fact, if you’re a trucking company with high driver turnover, growing your fleet size should be the last thing on your mind. The purpose of being in the trucking business is to make money, which means your first focus has got to be on reducing your driver turnover.

Turnover goes hand-in-hand with reducing your operating cost to the lowest possible number.

It is often said, "You cannot manage what you cannot measure." Before you can start reducing turnover, you need to know your numbers. Once you know where you truly stand on driver turnover, you can begin the strategy phase of determining exactly how you are going to take your driver turnover number and reduce it as low as possible. Viewing your Membership as an Investment

Over the years, CMCA has endeavored to run our organization like a business, and place the profit and benefits of our members over the interests of the Association. We continually strive to increase the value and benefits we bring to our members.

While this may be challenging at times, I have taken this concept to heart over the years as I have reviewed our participation in various programs to assess whether these represent enough value for our continued time and investment. As part of this process, when I annually review our programs, I take the time to list what benefits, ideas, cost-savings or other value that we have gained through our involvement with that group. I also look at the future direction of that program to see whether its future is a good match with our own.

I like to think of you and our other members as investors, much like an individual investing in a stock. You are investing funds and time into our organization with the hope that this investment will yield a return that exceeds your membership cost as well as the time you spend with us. Along with an immediate return, you like to look at the long-term prospects of your investment in our organization. While the CMCA management team has an obligation to you as a “shareholder”, you also have a responsibility to provide us with your ideas and input on how we can better serve you and our organization as a whole.

I look forward to hearing from you in the months ahead as to how we are doing, and what we can do better.

Many thanks to all of our “shareholders” for your support for CMCA.
