ATA SURVEYING TOWING PROBLEMS
Abuses by commercial towing companies of their customers is nothing new. Not every tower takes advantage of a motor carrier whose equipment is involved in a traffic accident, but far too many do, and ATA members -- and their insurers – have been warning that the problems with nonconsensual tows (that is, tows that are performed at the order of law enforcement, to get damaged equipment removed from the scene of an accident or incident) appear to be growing worse, at least in some parts of the country. Although federal law specifically allows states to regulate nonconsensual towing, few states currently do so.
ATA is surveying its members for their views of the seriousness of the problems they’ve encountered with towing companies. We’ll use the results to help pinpoint where the worst trouble seems to be, and to get a better handle on the nature of the problems and how to fix them.
Please help us by filling out the survey yourself. It won’t take long. Please do that today – or in any case by January 24. The Property Casualty Insurers Association is doing a parallel survey of its members, and we’ll be comparing results. But your responses will stay confidential – we won’t share them.
