Special Holiday Package in Good Hands with Veteran Drivers from APEX Transportation
The tree, an 82-year-old, 55-foot tall and 20-foot wide engelmann spruce, was harvested from the Uncompahgre Plateau on Nov. 5. Today, it will begin a 10-town public-viewing tour — with nine stops in Colorado and one in Asheville, N.C. — before being delivered to the West Lawn on Nov. 20. The tree’s journey can be tracked in real time at capitoltreetracker.com.
Theron Schmalzried and William “Butch” Hanna each have more than 40 years of truck driving experience and have won numerous safety awards. The veteran drivers said it felt good to be chosen.
“Theron and Butch have been with Apex for a long time; they are kind of our senior guys,” Schattinger said. “Butch is more of a local driver for us, and Theron is more of an over-the-road guy for us. They’ve been stellar their whole life, so it was kind of an easy choice to pick them.”
Check out the schedule and visit the tree in a community near you!

The Colorado Department of Transportation will close southbound Interstate 225 at Tamarac Rd/DTC Blvd from 11 p.m. on Wednesday, November 11 to 4:30 a.m. on Thursday, November 12. The closure is necessary so crews can install a new overhead sign structure and begin Phase II of a traffic flow and safety improvement project at the southbound I-225/I-25 interchange. Detour signage will be in place to safely direct motorists to alternate routes. The red cones represent the location of the full closure of southbound I-225 at the Tamarac Rd/DTC Blvd Exit 2-A during overnight hours on Wednesday, November 11. The blue line represents the area in which crews will improve traffic flow and widen lanes on I-225 southbound at the 'split' off ramp to I-25 northbound.

Driver Retention & Safety – New Research Confirms Relationship, With a Twist
Courtesy Scopelitis Transportation Consulting
In August 2020, an under-the-radar safety research organization called the National Surface Transportation Safety Center for Excellence published a new research report titled,
Examining the Relationship Between CMV Driver Retention and Safety. Before you stop here and say to yourself, ‘Well everyone knows that better retention results in better safety,” please read on because this research is a bit different.
Indeed, previous research has found that driver turnover is associated with higher crash rates. However, until this new study, it was unclear if drivers who voluntarily change jobs have higher crash rates compared to drivers who stayed in the job or are released due to recent crash involvement or safety violations (i.e., involuntary turnover). This study investigated that gap in knowledge—the gap between voluntary and involuntary driver turnover – and how this difference might impact safety performance. More specifically, this study examined the relationship between continuous employment, voluntary turnover and involuntary turnover, and involvement in future FMCSA-reportable crashes and moving violations.
