A Sneak Peek at the 2017 CMCA Conference

A special thank you to all the CMCA members and guests that attended the 2017 Conference held this past week in Beaver Creek, Colorado. This year's event was certainly one to celebrate, with over 350 attendees -- both carriers and vendors -- gathering to network, learn and celebrate!

A more in-depth, formal recap of last week's events will be available in the next issue of the Hotsheet! But for now, here's a sneak peek of just some of the highlights....

Thursday October 5th:

For the beginning of October, one could not wish for better weather to take in 18-holes of golf. The Eagle Vail Golf Club hosted a Sold Out event of 120 golfers.

The Chairman's Reception was well-attended in the beautiful 8100 Dining Room, with access to the patio featuring some gorgeous fall colors.

Friday October 6th:
Breakfast kicked off with a keynote from Chris Spear, ATA President. The morning session featured Steve Gilliland who gave an entertaining presentation on "Enjoy the Ride". Lunch featured emcee Joey Bunch presenting the Green Shipper Award to Nestle Purina and Green Fleet Awards to Navajo Shippers and Iron Woman Construction.

The evening festivities featured dinner along with a live auction and paddle raiser to benefit the Foundation. THANK YOU to everyone who contributed-we raised over $57,000 for the Foundation.

Entertainment for the evening festivities included casino night, cigar rolling, mojito tasting, photo booth, wine/rum toss and a strolling caricature artist. The crowds enjoyed the fun-filled evening until 11pm when we awarded prizes.

Saturday October 7th:
The Safety breakfast featured Deputy Chief Mark Savage, CSP and the introduction of the new Board for the Safety Council. The morning sessions featured Steve Bryan, Vigillo on CSA Reform Efforts, followed by Elsabeth Barna, ATA COO and Joey Bunch, Colorado Springs Gazette on Media Relations.

Lunch featured two Friends of Trucking Awards to Rep. Diane Mitch Busch and Sen. Don Coram. The Distinguished Service Award was presented to Howard Perea, RAC Trucking. The new CMCA Executive Board was introduced and Shaun Egan, Iron Woman Construction took over the helm as CMCA Chairman. A big Thank You to Barb Delles for her leadership this past year.

Two receptions on Saturday with light food and

refreshments made for an enjoyable ending to a very successful conference.

Thank you to all the sponsors and exhibitors who helped make this event possible. Your support is greatly appreciated

Safe Lifting: Got Your Employee’s Back?

In 2013, overexertion injuries from lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling materials accounted for $15 billion in workers’ compensation costs nationally, or 25 percent of all claims costs. Only the common cold accounts for more lost days of work.
Claims involving lifting are the most common strain-related injury that Pinnacol sees. From 2011 to 2015, strain claims from lifting accounted for 32 percent of all strains, with an average annual cost of almost $31 million. The average cost of a low back injury claim is $10,745. And the indirect costs to the policyholder (e.g., loss of productivity, overtime costs and rehiring and training costs) can be much greater — two to four times the direct cost of the claim. The following controls can help curb back and shoulder injuries at your workplace: Read More...
