Dear Community of ChristChurch,
As we move into November and start thinking about Thanksgiving and the holidays, I have been reflecting on this fall season with much gratitude in my heart. I am thankful because I have witnessed this congregation embrace what it means to live in Christian community and to explore together what it means to move closer to Loving Our Neighbors Without Limits.
Here are a few of the ways, just in the past couple of weeks, that you all have shown what it means to live out our Christian faith in these divided and difficult times…
Saturday, October 22nd, Survivor Stories Event:
We welcomed people into our church home to share their stories of pain and hope. Seven shared their stories of encounters with violence in their lives - some had never shared their stories before. Because several of you came to offer hospitality and support, they felt safe enough to move their stories out of the hidden shadows of shame and blame and into the warm light of acceptance, compassion and support. Healing occurs when people are able to share their difficult stories in a safe and sacred space. It should be a given that the church is such a place. Unfortunately, many people’s experience of the church is quite the opposite. Those who participated in this event were, for each other that night, the face and heart of Jesus. And, women of WINGS, let me just say… you certainly know how to lay out a welcoming table!
Friday, October 28th, Movie That Matter
18 people gathered to share a meal and watch a movie. The group consisted of people who worship regularly with us on Sunday mornings, and others whose entry point into ChristChurch is the Movies That Matter group. Regardless of how they are connected to this faith community, each of them is seeking community, a place to belong, a place where they can freely share what matters to them. We have met twice now and both times the potluck meals have been amazing and the conversation engaging and meaningful. This group is just one example of what Christian community can look like… expansive, fun loving, welcoming and inclusive.
Sunday, October 30th, Love Without Limits
Several people stuck around after worship this past Sunday to spend time with our guest, Laila Hajoo, a Muslim American woman living in Beaverton. She shared with us about her growing up and her desire to build bridges between people who have been separated by fear and prejudice. Once again, you listened to her story, you sought understanding and community. You welcomed her into our circle as Christ welcomes all people. You will have opportunity to do so again this Sunday when we welcome Shahriar Ahmed from Bilal Masjid mosque to join us for further conversation after worship.
Thank you for all the ways you are living out your faith, welcoming others and showing people in Washington County what Christian community can look like.
God’s peace,
Pastor David
