LENT 2014 – Beginning this Wednesday (Ash Wednesday)
at Community of ChristChurch
The Lenten season begins this year on March 5th with Ash Wednesday. Perhaps, right now you are asking yourself, “Why ashes?”

Ash Wednesday begins the season of Lent. Lent is a 40 day season in the
life of the church when we who follow Jesus focus on his journey to the
cross, and ultimately to resurrection and new life. Before we get to Easter,
we must be honest with ourselves about the realities of sin and death, and acknowledge all the ways we alienate ourselves from God and one another. We begin this season by receiving the sign of the cross on our foreheads in ashes.

Brian Maas, Bishop of the Nebraska synod of the ELCA puts it this way…

“Applied with the words, ‘Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return,’ the ashes remind us that our physical existence is ultimately mere carbon, but the life we know in Christ is eternal. Much of what we invest ourselves in is temporary; only our life in Christ ultimately matters.

Placing the ashes on our foreheads in the sign of the cross has two meanings: first, a sign of humility, and second, a reminder that it is in Christ’s cross that we have access to unending life.”

Come worship with us this Wednesday night at 7:00pm for a Worship Service with Holy Communion and the Imposition of Ashes.

Lenten Midweek Gatherings: Got Prayer?
Each Wednesday in the season of Lent between Ash Wednesday and Holy Week (March 12-April 9) we will gather at ChristChurch (in the Commons) to share a meal of soup and bread and explore a variety of prayer forms. We
will begin with supper at 6:30pm, have a brief introduction to the prayer style at 7:00 pm, engage in a time of prayer, and end by 7:30pm. If you would like to stay past 7:30 to spend more time practicing these forms of prayers you
are certainly encouraged to do so. Everyone is welcome to be part of this
time of prayer and fellowship. These evenings are designed to be family friendly, accessible and engaging for all ages.

Here are some of the prayer forms we’ll be learning about and trying together:

March 12th -    Singing Our Prayers
March 19th -    Praying In Color

March 26th -    Praying the Scriptures - Lectio Divina
April 2nd -        Walking Our Prayers - Labyrinth
April 9th -         Embodying our Prayers

If you would like to volunteer to make soup or help with set-up or clean-up for these Wednesday evening gatherings, a sign-up sheet will be in the Commons on Sunday morning.

There are lots of ways to participate in the life of this community in worships, learning, fellowship and service during the season of Lent. For a more complete listing of opportunities pick up a flyer in the Entry.

Godspell Jr.
This weekend @ Valley Catholic High School in Beaverton
Are you looking for something to do this weekend that is uplifting and inspiring? Our own Ashley and Natalie Taylor are participating in a production of Godspell Jr. and they invite you to come check it out.

Based on the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, and featuring a Tony-nominated pop-rock score by Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Pippin), this joyous musical retells the story of Jesus and his disciples through a series of charming, comedic sketches and songs like "Day by Day," "Save the People," "Light of the World" and "All for the Best." The show's unique blend of theatrical traditions, like pantomime & vaudeville, meet modern conventions as the cast tells the story among Portland's backdrop. This contemporary setting brings the positive message of hope and kindness that has resonated with generations of audiences since it opened off-Broadway in 1971.
