Scripture Reading for this Sunday:
2 Samuel 12:1-9

ZoomUganda shares the journey of 12 girls from the Uganda village of Matale, who were given 12 cameras and 24 hours in which to tell their own stories through their own lenses. A Photovoice project directed by Julie Resnick of Portland, Oregon, ZoomUganda empowered its participants to stand in the centers of their world and show you the view from there. On Thursday, October 30th, at 7:00pm, Julie and her Nike colleague, Noella  Nalujjuna (who grew up in Matale) will speak at an event open to the public here at ChristChurch.

 Council Corner Highlights
Synopsis of October 8, 2014 Council meeting
This note begins a new process for improving transparency of council meetings. A council member, as determined by rotation, will summarize the highlights of each council meeting for inclusion in Faith News or other means of distribution.

The October meeting began and ended with a devotion and prayer as always. This was followed by approval of the September minutes.

The pastor’s report began with summary of an Inter-religious Action Network of Washington County meeting. Sallie encouraged council members to attend future events to inform our consideration of formal membership.

Council members are reviewing a new website to replace the existing one. The goals are to improve the website itself as well as the ease of diverse team members to directly contribute.

There were concerns among the members regarding the climate related activities which echoed council concerns expressed in the August meeting minutes. As with any controversial topic, the Respectful Communications guidelines were highlighted. It is hoped that introducing such points of view will lead to increased 1-1 discussions and mutual understanding. We recognized the danger that it may be seen as an endorsement of any particular point of view, scientific theory, political position, or call to action (it was not). We have a Lutheran heritage of individual study of both biblical and secular issues rather than a dependence on church authorities to do our thinking for us, and we continued in that tradition. Ongoing discussion of these concerns was encouraged.

Rich’s financial report showing YTD giving was behind about 10%, but is slow in summer and this is not dramatic. The council will encourage members to enroll in any of the three automated giving programs we utilize to smooth out times when members are away. Presentations in worship and quarterly statements will be made. The council selected a backup health coverage plan in case it is needed to cover the staff.

Following the recent council retreat, the council is working on improving its decision making process using mutual invitaton, Respectful Communication guidelines (these are outlined in the book “Holy Currencies”), and 1-1 conversations. We have a proposed identity statement and will need council approval for new sanctioned groups while encouraging members to organize to do work they feel called to do.

We continue to show our facilities to interested non-profit and for-profit entities.

Finally, we discussed the “worship in the pink” which was part of last Sunday’s service.

And from Council President Sallie Bullock:
Council Retreat Update
Thanks to Jill Bierman and her Mother, we were able to stay for free at a beautiful home in Pacific City on one of the nicest weekends of the year. Two people from the Synod office volunteered their time to work with us. Jan Wierima, a very energetic extrovert that helped facilitate our Discernment Gathering last year, and Ryan Marquardt, a young twenty-something that is very wise beyond his years. These two walked us through a personality tool, similar to the Myers-Briggs type indicator, that helped us understand ourselves and how we function in a larger group. It was very insightful and we plan to use this information in our decision making process moving forward. You may be interested to know that of the nine members of council, 5 are Extroverts and 4 are Introverts. This is good for looking at issues through different perspectives. We used this tool while working through some Biblical work and plan to share a skit with the congregation soon with what we learned.

There were many one-on-one conversations that took place, not only to get to know one another better, but to understand the perspectives that we bring to council. We looked back at the listening and discernment process of a year ago to see if we are on track with the values and dreams of the congregation. As a reminder, this is what we came up with:
We are...
… an Open and Inclusive community where all people feel Welcome and a sense of Belonging. …a people hungry to Learn (about God, each other, and the world around us) and eager to Engage with Christ's mission in the world to Love and Serve our neighbor.

Your church council wants to make sure we are keeping these values at the core of all of our decisions.
We are looking at a variety of ways that we can share with you what we are doing, as not everyone feels comfortable getting up and speaking in front of the congregation. Each Council member will share with you in Faith Conversations what is happening in our meetings on the same month that they are in charge of the devotion. That way you should hear from all of us by the end of the fiscal year.
We look forward to working together as a council and with the congregation to continue to make this a vital and growing place of faith.

Sincerely,
Sallie Bullock
Council President
