When he was chairman and CEO of General Electric Co., Reginald Jones was named the best CEO in the country in a poll taken by Fortune magazine. After he retired (and was succeeded by Jack Welch), he served on a number of corporate boards and made several appearances in Directors & Boards offering his guidance on enlightened governance practices. The following list comes from his article, “Things You Can’t Live With As a Board Member” [Spring 1994]. He died in 2003.

Tax Council Policy Institute Annual Symposium

The Tax Council Policy Institute (TCPI) will hold its 17th Annual Tax Policy & Practice Symposium on Feb 11-12, 2016, in Washington, D.C., with KPMG serving as program manager for the event. The two-day symposium, titled “Capital Matters: How Taxes Influence the Global Creation, Deployment and Mobility of Capital,” will feature keynote speakers, panels and discussion forums, bringing together leaders from business, government and academia, who will examine a wide range of topics on the taxation of capital that U.S. businesses face today.

Mark Fields Elected to IBM Board of Directors
|
|
The IBM (NYSE: IBM) board of directors today elected Mark Fields to the board effective March 1, 2016. Fields, 55, is president and chief executive officer, Ford Motor Company. Fields joined Ford in 1989. In 2014, he became president and chief executive officer and was elected as a board of director.

CenturyLink Director Resigns Over Workplace Environment
|
|
A CenturyLink Inc. director resigned after his fellow board members said he was “creating an environment that was unproductive,” leading to a public dispute with the disclosure of internal e-mails. Joseph Zimmel, a former Goldman Sachs Group Inc. executive, resigned after all board members except one agreed that Zimmel shouldn’t stand for re-election.

Securities Class Action Filings Rebound to Highest Levels Since 2008
|
|
Federal securities class action litigation rose to 189 filings in 2015, an 11 percent increase over 2014 levels, according to Securities Class Action Filings—2015 Year in Review, a report issued by Cornerstone Research and the Stanford Law School Securities Class Action Clearinghouse.
