Dashboards: Why Every Business Should Have One (or more!)

BY ANDY KAPLA

You use dashboards every day, although you may not realize it. The simplest is a clock. When you awake, it tells you what time it is. At a glance, you also know how long you have to get out of the house. If you drive to work, the instrument panel in your car is another dashboard, providing key information you wouldn’t want to be without. When you look up at the dashboard in the sky, you see what nature is telling you about the weather.

Dashboards surround us. In business, dashboards commonly provide a quick view of units sold and revenue. Here’s how you can use dashboards to improve the performance of your organization or business.

Cybersecurity: Yahoo Breach A Wake Up Call to Board Members

BY BRIAN STAFFORD

For leaders who are concerned about potential exposure following the Yahoo breach, here are four ways that boards and senior executives can keep communication secure and efficient without compromising usability or convenience.

Every day, data breaches dominate headline news, offering a grim reminder of both the growing sophistication of attacks and the vulnerabilities that still exist inside and outside of our firewalls.

While the causes of these data breaches vary, it’s not just the hacker or threat actor that companies need to worry about—it’s the employee, too. A recent Experian study found that employees were the cause of more than half of security- or breach-related incidents. Whether intended or accidental, employees introduce added layers of risk that must be adequately managed against in order to mitigate vulnerabilities and protect against future loss events.

Diversity: Four Ways to Start Building Board Diversity

BY DAN MARCEC

How boards can get started on a path to thoughtful board refreshment.

Corporate stakeholders are calling for more diversity on boards, but even leading-edge companies have not yet heeded the call. Though the commitment to diversity is there for many in word, in deed there has been slow progress. For example, women accounted for 21.3% of S&P 500 board seats in 2016, according to a recent report from Equilar. That represents an increase of fewer than five percentage points since 2012, when approximately one-sixth of all director seats were occupied by females.

There’s more than meets the eye in terms of gender diversity as well. The overall numbers are up, but leadership positions are still low. Just 7.6% of all S&P 500 board leadership positions—CEO-Chair, non-executive chair or lead director—were filled by females in 2016. That is an increase from 5.6% in 2012, but it still falls well behind the overall percentage of women on boards. Furthermore, just five S&P 500 companies have reached full parity with at least 50% women on their boards, and just 12 others have more than 40% female directors.
