More ECHOvillage Stores!

ECHOvillage Store Bacolod

There are now five ECHOvillage Stores (EVSs) around the country. The EVSs are the retail stores of ECHOstore's NGO partners from the Partner and Access Centers (PACCIs) of the Peace and Equity Foundation. The store was first set up in October 2009 at 69 Esteban Abada in Loyola Heights, Quezon City; then in Puerto Princesa, Palawan in 2010; followed by Bacolod City, Negros Occidental early this year. In July, Chit flew to General Santos to attend the opening of EVS GenSan and, in August, Reena oversaw the setup of EVS Baguio.

Store Makeover as CSR

Reena with Noemi in front of the SEDCen showroom

ECHOstore--represented by Reena Francisco, our store operations specialist--undertook a makeover of the showroom of the the Social Enterprises Development Center (SEDCen) showroom in Legazpi, Albay called "Orgullo kan Bikol" (OKB). ECHOstore fulfills its corporate social responsibility initiatives by lending time, effort, and talent to other social enterprises such as SEDCen, where ECHOpartner Chit sits as a trustee.

And More Partners!

ECHOstore has a number of new partners in the past three months:
  • Bigayang Bayan is a small straw bag business Marlyn Bragas started with her neighbors with a capital of only P500 and a little creativity. They bought some straw, and made them into cute and fashionable bags. Marlyn has been featured on GMA 7's Hanep Buhay, which later introduced her to ECHOstore where the bags are now sold
  • Sto. Rosario Multipurpose Cooperative is composed of housewives who make handicrafts and accessories from recycled paper and cartons.
  • Cultura Verde Footwear is run by a group of graduates from Ateneo de Manila University that has designed shoes with soles fashioned from old airplane tires. Instead of contributing to the dumpsite problem, these tires are now being recycled. The shoes are not only lightweight, but durable. They come with old katsa bags (flour sacks) that are sewn and tie-dyed by housewives in a small town in Samar.
Another Award for Chit!

Congratulations to Chit for taking home another award on behalf of ECHOstore and other sustainble businesses. She was again (this is her second time) named as one of the finalists (who are already all winners) for the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Philippines award given by Ernst & Young and the SGV Foundation.

Watch out for photos from the awarding cermony on the next eView.
A Knight-ed Came Visiting

A very prominent British personality came to the country and met with us. Sir Stephen Bubb was here as a guest of the British Council, which supports intiatives in social entrepreneurship. Mr. Bubb is the Chief Executive of the Association of Chief Executives of Voluntary Organizations (ACEVO). He was formerly the Secretary General of Euclid Network, the European Body for Third Sector leaders; and is presently the Chair of Social Investment Business, the largest social investor in the United Kingdom. Mr. Bubb actively blogs and wrote about ECHOstore in his blog bloggerbubb.blogspot.com.

ECHO Viseats

July saw us in Nueva Ecija, Pangasinan, and Baguio. We used to call these trips ECHOvisits--our periodic personal appearances at our suppliers and cooperatives' offices, showrooms, and workshops. But everywhere we went, we were fed. In Nueva Ecija, Mrs. Joson of Kababaihang Masigla ng Nueva Ecija (KMNE) prepared a spread of macopa salad, tinapang tilapia, and sinigang. In Batista, Pangasinan, we were fed puto calasiao and fresh buko juice. After these two northern Luzon visits, we started to call our trips ECHO Viseats. In Baguio, we ate sayote tops salad at the country club, courtesy of Mr. and Mrs. Manny Javelosa (our untiring host for our Baguio Country Club stays); and visited Hill Station, where our friend, Mitos, has set up a restaurant.

So, in August, we went south to the Family Farm School not far from Taal Lake, and saw how they made sardines from the lake's famous tawilis fish. We then visited Anihan Technical School, where a Bureau of Food and Drug (BFAD)-compliant industrial kitchen prepares institutional orders of polvoron, fruitcake, and other baked goods. Next was a long drive to Cavite for ECHOfarms. Our staff had never been to the farm, so we gave them the opportunity to pick organic vegetables and eat them off the ground. We were served tarragon tea as we had our merienda of Spanish bread and pan de coco. Our final stop was at Talleres de Nazareth in Rosario, Cavite, where we saw firsthand how our tahong chips, squid heads, and squid rings were made.

The ECHO Viseats filled not only our tummies, but our souls when we heard of the stories of how these enterprises started--all with a mission to do good, help the underprivileged and marginalized, and build a social enterprise.

Natural Food Expo East
Baltimore, USA
September 20 - 25

Jeannie, on behalf of ECHOstore, was invited and hosted by the Organic Trade Association in the United States (US) to attend the Natural Food Expo West. Two years ago, the US Department of Agriculture invited ECHOstore to the trade show. Chit flew in from San Francisco, where she was attending the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Women's Forum, to join Jeannie.

United Natural Foods CEO Michael Funk, and Jeannie

Having been to both the East and West Coast version of the product expo, Jeannie and Chit now had a good idea of the scope of American natural and organic product lines. One of their finds were American products that make use of Philippine coconuts. One of the brands, Nutiva--which was established by passionate organic advocate John Roulac--sells superfoods from hemp, coconut, and chia (a seed from the mint family). John flies to and from Davao to source his coconut products such as coconut oil, butter, and cream, which tastes very much like our latik. John was clearly stating that we need to plant more coconut trees. We agree!

Global Women Vendors Exhibition and Forum
Chongqing, China
September 27 - 29

From Baltimore, Jeannie and Chit met up again in Chongqing, China. They were both invited (Jeannie for ECHOstore Sustainble Lifestyle, under the industry category of Textiles; and Chit for Le Bistro Sustainable Coffee) for the first-ever Global Women Vendors Exhibition and Forum, a global platform on sourcing for women vendors.

L to R: Chit, SGV Senior Adviser and Ambassador Delia Albert,
Chonqing Chamber of Commerce Chair Liu Qingrui, and Jeannie

Many Fortune 500 companies are taking their supplier diversity programs global to actively source from women in target markets. As sourcing is no longer local or national, this presents an enormous opportunity for women from around the world to sell into global supply chains, including women from developing and transition economies. Out of 700 companies, only 70 were chosen; and ECHOstore Sustainable Lifestyle and Le Bistro Sustainable Coffee were chosen to participate from the Philippines.

L to R: Meg Jones of ITC's Women and Trade Program,
Monique Ward of Accenture's Asia Pacific Procurement, Chit,
Phyllis Jones of the International Women's Coffee Alliance,
and SGV Senior Adviser and Ambassador Delia Albert

The forum was put together by the International Trade Center, WEConnect International, the Commission for Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation in China, the Chinese Association of Women Entrepreneurs, the International Federation of Business and Professional Women, the International Women's Coffee Alliance, SPINNA: The Women's International Textile Alliance, and Quantum Leaps. The objective: to link buyers and sellers.

We were introduced to companies such as Walmart, Marriott, Accenture, and other international groups and businesses with opportunities for Filipinos to bring community textiles, goods, and coffee to the global market.

In August, Jeannie gave a talk on "Green Jobs" at the 1st Green Jobs Conference, and on "Social Enterprise and Social Responsibility for a Sustainable Life" at the Centro Escolar University's School of Education, Liberal Arts, and Music.

Chit, on the other hand, moderated a session on "Sustainability in Food and Beverage Establishments" at the Meetings, Incentive Travel, Conventions, Exhibitions & Events (MICE) Philippine Conference in Cebu; and talked on "Social Entrepreneurship and Marketing" at the Great Women Project of the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) in Davao and again in Manila.

In September, Chit spoke on topics such as "Innovative Thinking" with SunPower Corporation, "Sustainable Living" for Women in Travel, and "Coffee and Supply Chain Management in Food and Beverage" at the Philippine Institute for Supply Management.

Holiday Gifts & Baskets

Christmas songs and the sounds of bells are coming! Plan your gifts, and avoid getting stressed out for the holidays. We have a line of ECHOstore baskets of various goodies in different themes. We're just a call away for any orders, or drop by.

CUSTOMER CORNER
We are always happy when our customers take the time out to let us know what they think. Here's a letter from Marion Marking, Editor in Chief o f China Business Philippines:

I was at the Podium, and was so happy to find an ECHOstore there--and peppermint bath items apart from the usual foot treatments that seem to be the only things peppermint at other local stores! Last night (at the end of the second day of an awful migraine), I bathed in everything peppermint from ECHOstore. Shampoo, conditioner, and shower gel. Voila! No more migraine. I was going to pop an Advil after my shower. Didn't need it.

I'll continue to hoard your peppermint stuff (no need to raid Sasa Hong Kong for my peppermint fix! And the Body Shop's prices are way too unreasonable--and their merchandise annoyingly limited!) I'll just transfer all my ECHOstore stuff to some empty hotel toiletry bottles. I've already spread the gospel to a friend whose sister suffers from migraines all the time. Keep up the good work! Warm regards.

So we researched, and found out that: for women suffering from frequent headaches, two to three strong cups of peppermint tea is considered highly effective and much safter than aspirin and other drugs, producing no known side effects. The essential oils of peppermint can be inhaled to relieve headaches, a powerful aromatherapy cure.

Meanwhile, Ruth Salvedia writes:

I have the Lavender Mint Linen Spray. I don't sleep without spraying it on my pillows every night. I simply love it, especially because other room fragrances aggravate my allergic rhinitis!

Lavender is one of the most soothing and healing scents that bring about deep relaxation.

Iris Gonzales writes:

On behalf of the Economic Journalists Association of the Philippines (EJAP), I would like to thank you for the support ECHOstore gave at our recent outreach activity in Lake Sebu, South Cotabato. We donated 90 school kits to T'boli students. The students appreciated the bags the EJAP brought from ECHOstore. Thank you for the affordable rates you gave!

THE POWER OF THREE
Me + Me

We can make our minds so still like water that beings gather about us to see their own images and so live for a moment with a clearer, perhaps even fiercer life because of our silence.

William Butler Yeats
Irish poet and playwright

You + Me = We

The greatest good you can do for another is not just to share your riches, but to reveal him his own.

Benjamin Disraeli
Earl of Beaconsfield, British statesman and literary figure

We + Planet = Sustainable Lifestyle

We generate our own environment. We get exactly what we deserve. How can we resent a life we've created ourselves? Who's to blame, who's to credit but us? Who can change it, anytime we wish, but us?

Richard Bach
American writer

SIMPLE GREEN STEPS
Avoid plastic food containers

Buy food packaged in paper, glass, aluminum, or steel as often as you can. All these containers are easily recyclable. Avoid plastic. Only 3.9% of post-consumer plastic is being recycled today, and plastics as a percentage of the waste stream is rapidly growing.
