Exciting times
Dear reader,
The ashes of the vulcano have interfered with 3 ELIA events: the Languages through Lenses workshop in Amsterdam, the Claiming Creativity symposium in Chicago and the artesnet all partners meeting in Porto, but everyone made in home and the events were nevertheless successful. Exciting times...
In this newsletter, between the activities and latest updates, you will also find an advertisement for an ELIA Deputy Director. Please spread the
word about this position that will play a key role in the future development of the organisation. Lars Ebert, holding
this function so far, has decided to focus his work energy on Castrum Peregrini. We regret that Lars will be less involved but of course we understand his career move. We are happy that - although with less time - he will stay close to the organisation with his energy and expertise, in projects and as an advisor.
We are looking forward to the Biennial conference, Neu Now live festival and General Assembly meeting that all will take place in October in Nantes. In the general assembly we intend to discuss future developments of ELIA with you in detail. We will elect a new Board in Nantes and a new President will be elected soon after that. Yes, exciting times.
Have a good read with the newsletter and please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions,
Warm regards,
Carla Delfos
Executive Director ELIA

Update: Higher Arts Education and European Ranking Plans In response to the U-map and U-multirank projects
Earlier the ELIA Board expressed serious concerns about the plans to
develop a European approach to ranking of universities. The Board
strongly feels that a system of University Ranking, in whatever form,
could have a damaging effect on the higher arts education sector in
Europe as a whole. The Board decided to discuss this issue with an open
mind at the Biennial Conference in Nantes, October 2010 both at one of the symposia and at the General Assembly and to prepare an information and strategy paper for further discussion.
In Nantes, project leader Frans van Vught of two major current European ranking projects U-map and U-multirank will inform us about the European ranking initiatives.

Claiming Creativity
Higher Arts Education in Cultural Transition
Videos online on the web forum
We are
proud to say that we had a very lively 2+ days in Chicago, with many
wonderful discussions and three keynote presentations that enriched the discourse.
We had a total of 176 participants coming from 23 countries of 5 different
continents. We are sorry that some of the participants were unable to attend
the Symposium because of the volcanic eruption. We truly regret their absence,
and are most appreciative of the fact that many have made the effort to share
their presentations and thoughts with us on the web forum.
All the presentations and videos of the Symposium can be found on the web forum www.claimingcreativity.com/interact.
All ELIA members are most welcome to participate in the web forum and take the
opportunity to continue the very exciting and fruitful discussions begun in
Chicago.
We look forward to continuing and developing these ideas in the
symposium session “Creativity Reclaimed” during the 11th ELIA Biennial Conference in Nantes, France from 27-30 October.
