Round 6: Versus De LaSalle 2 at Captain Cook. Won 14-0
There was a fair bit of confusion leading into today’s game with it being moved between Kurnell and Captain Cook, but we all made it in the end. The boys didn’t train well at all during the week and coming up against one of the front runners in the comp we had our work cut out. The first quarter of the game was to and fro with nobody wanting to give an inch in defence. The boys were displaying some excellent sets of hands as they were putting on set play after set play. Finally De La Salle broke with well placed kick from Tripi for Greeny to grab our first 4 pointer. With 5 still on the clock in the first half we got a penalty deep in De La’s zone, Tripi scooted out of dummy half on the second to claim our second try. We went to the break 8-0 up. The second half started with the usual arm wrestle, add this with the heavy defence in 1st half and the big boys were getting tired. Fatty found himself on the wing having a rest when the ball came through the hands for him to add another 4 points. Tripi grabbed the 2 points to take the lead to 14-0 and the eventual full time score. Well done to all the boys for excellent defensive game, to keep a big mobile team like De La to nil is not an easy task. Man of the match went to Tripi who was involved in everything. Other awards went to Josh for outstanding attack and defence and Taine who was excellent under the high ball all day.
Round 7: Versus St Josephs at Anzac Oval. Won 14-0
Finally the boys got back to footy, its been a long month and it showed in the early exchanges, with mistake after mistake giving Joey's plenty of ball in our half. Regardless of the lack of possession the boys really muscled up in defence, showing plenty of mongrel. When we finally got enough ball to put together a full set of six, the Joeys line broke. Fatty and Luke were almost unstoppable in attack and both were rewarded with first half try's coming off set plays. Greeny got the one goal to take us to a 10-0 lead at the break.
We had it all against us in the second half, running up-hill into a strong breeze. The one thing we did have though was our human wrecking ball, Brains who sat the first half off. The defence was outstanding from both teams with the only try coming off a strong run from Noakesy in the final minute. Well done boys, keeping one of the better teams in the comp to nil is no mean feat. One thing I believe we need more practice in, is goal kicking, with only 3 from our last 8 attempts, this could cost you a game one day.
Man of the match went to Fatty and other awards went to Tristan and Brains for their tireless defence. The training award went to Brodie.
6 Blue RD 7 V’s Como 36-0 Win
Our best game yet. The boys hadn’t played for a month and were very keen to TACKLE. Como had no chance with most of there runs resulting in being driven out the sideline on the 1st tackle in some of the best defence I have seen this Team play.
In attack it was great to see all the boys have so many runs and there overall improvement is evident.
Rory Cartwright: Smashed them in defence.
Jy Garvey: Made 40 metres with every run.
Chad Bonser: Took at least 3 to bring him down.
Jackson Chalk: Again smashed them in defence.
Nick Freeman: Angled runs and through in a step.
Jet Hickson: Straight up the middle.
Jai Williams: 1 Try, put his body on the line.
Luke Wallace: 3 Tries (from 3 runs), 1 Goal (from 1 attempt).
Kurt Peychers: 3 Tries, (could have been 4 but stopped short by his coach?) Man of The Match

Under 6s at Anzac Oval 20/06/10
All Winners
Today all the Under 6s were invited down to Anzac to run on The A Grade. 28 of our “stars of the future” piled into the Clubhouse for the A Grades pre-game talk. The boys had smiles from ear to ear as they ran on to the field with the A Grade. The A Grade then presented all the boys with a mini football to keep.
When half time in the big game hit, all the boys ran back onto the field for a game of footy. The kids loved it, with many Tries being scored by all Teams. The crowd loved it with many of the hits bringing in some big cheers from the Hill.
A few of the boys stayed back for the presentation and received an Award for their effort.
8A Engadine Vs Menai - Won 40-10
Well boy's I forgot my pen and paper on Saturday, and with all the excitement of Sunday's knock out comp my recollection of the game is a little hazy!!
We had our first points scored against us, and I want to say well done to all of you for going as long as you have without letting any team cross your line. It couldn't last forever but what's important is that you went on with the real job of winning the game.
The try that had everyone buzzing came from a draw and pass near the oppositions line. We have been practicing this for the last two weeks and it paid off. This is the first of many team tries I hope to see as the season moves on.
I don't want to leave anyone's heroic deeds out of my report, but as I mentioned left my pen at home so no individual mentions this week. I recall some good fends, some strong runs, and some great back to back tackles in the middle. Not bad for a team that hadn't played for 3 weeks.
Man of the match was Dane Courtney - Great offload champ. Keep up the good work.
Sunday - The Spud Cup knockout.
On a cold Sunday morning at Helensburgh, 30 teams rolled up to do battle for the Spud Cup and the Dragons walked away with the title of "RUNNERS UP". That's one hell of an achievement for any side, let alone one that was not at full strength, and is widely regarded as having the smallest kids in the 8's comp. "CONGRATULATIONS - YOU BEAUTY - HIP HIP HOORAY - WELL DONE - YOU LITTLE RIPPA"
You boy's played like men. In the final we faced the toughest side we have ever played, and though we got off to a rocky start we dug deep and played to the best of our ability right to the end. And that is the true measure of great side - never quit or surrender and play hard till the very end, and somewhere in between, enjoy every moment of the battle, win lose or draw.
I sincerely applaud all of you, for giving it your best. Blake, Jayden, Sam, Dane, Harrison, Daniel, Harry, Steven, Ethan - "You are all Champions"
A-Grade Report – V’ De La Salle – round 7 Won – 36-20
Firstly congratulations to both our U17’s and A-Reserve side that played before our game today and in both cases came away will some very good wins.
Big thanks also towards Aussie Home Loans who donated all the footy’s that went to our under 6 teams that ran out with our A-Grade players and put on a demonstration game during the half time of our game. We hope you young lads enjoyed the experience and one day look forward to seeing you run out representing the mighty Engadine A-Grade squad!!!
This was our first game back in 5 weeks due to all the wet weather we have experienced and although round 7 of the competition, it felt more like we were going back into round 1 and with very little training over this period due to the oval being closed it would be fair to say that we were going to be a little rusty going into his game.
De La Salle won the toss and elected to give us the downhill run in the first half, with the first 10 minutes of this game seeing some scrappy play from both sides with De La eventually taking advantage of this situation and posting the first points of the afternoon. With our lads behind on the scoreboard and things not working our way it took our most senior player in Shane Newton to take some leadership and in the way only he can, he fired up our guys with some solid footy eventually seeing him break through De La Salle defence and crossing under the post for our first points of the afternoon. It wasn’t long after this that one of the best tries of the season was scored when the ball was passed through a thousand sets of hands from one end of the paddock to the other eventually seeing James Andrew go over in the corner to the enormous cheers from the Hill. Thanks for your support folks! Not long after it was Shane Newton again stepping up and putting on one of his never give up runs seeing him get a sensational pass away to Matt Stubbs who finished off with a further 4 points towards our first half score. The first half was really Shanes half as there was no arguing that he got our guys fired up and eventually seeing us go to the half time break 16 points to 4.
We started the second half without our big forward Nathan Bullock due to a nasty head clash he experienced towards the end of the first half seeing him put his teeth through his lip and although we started well we did slip into cruise control which both the coach and his assistance weren’t overly happy about as De La were allowed to put away three very easy tries whilst a player down. Nathan Bullock did go to the hospital for stitched but not before he had himself taped up (resembling a mummy) and sent back out in the second half as he didn’t want to let his mates down and what a MIGHTY effort this was.
Pat Carr and Chris Wood had a great second half game with Woodsy on one occasion providing Pat with a masterful inside ball which lead to Pat scoring and De La looking for the replay to work out what had just happened. Not to be out done Jason Beare got into the action seeing him convert 4 goals and one try and Matt Stubbs finishing off the game with a very nice try on the bell.
Big thanks today to Ben Leahy who came up from our Reserve side and made a great impact on the game coming off the bench.

A reserves v Kurnell WON 24 - 18 Round 7
This was a much needed and worthy victory that sees us now only 1 point outside the top 4.
The boys had some very positive talk in the pre-match warm up and realised the pride associated with playing before local business sponsors, family and friends on Anzac Oval in the Engadine Dragons colours.
We started the first half very strongly and matched a larger pack of forwards with determined defence. Sustained early pressure led to a very good try by 2nd rower Steve “Rusty” Ring who powered through the defence. That try was followed up another good one by 5/8 Steve Dabin. Steve and Jimmy Mollard at halfback provided excellent service in the halves and combined beautifully with Steve”Milky” Coughlan at hooker in some very entertaining second phase play.
Kurnell got a converted try just before the break. 8-6 our way at half time.
In the second half Super Coach Fleming utilised the “secret move” twice to great effect against the unsuspecting opposition. [the secret move is when you pass the ball to “the Panther” Vili Na’baa]. This masterstroke resulted in 2 tries! A good try scored by Tommy “the Westpac neck” Hubbard capped a game marked by his leadership and organization in defence.
Last game against the boys were courageous against a big physical style of football. In this game our fellas out muscled the opposition with doggedly persistent defence and aggressive hits. They remind me of pocket battle ships that just keep on fighting. One tackle deserves special mention. Logan McGlinchey, brother, that hit you put on the Kurnell 5/8 smashed him 3 meters over the sideline. It was the hit of the year and I loved it.
8A Engadine Vs Bosco - Won 20-12
Val Kearns Memorial Shield
This match was a step back for us as a team, and whilst there were some good individual efforts, you would have to say that it was not our finest game. We walked away with a win but probably for the first time in more than a year, we looked beatable, and that gives other teams hope. Now we have to work harder than ever before, to win back our reputation as the most aggressive defensive side in the comp. You have to learn to take the bad with the good, so here comes the bad: We were too slow to move up in defence, and some didn't move up at all, and at times the lack of commitment to a tackle was disappointing. Players were in the way of runners, and runners were standing flat and not hitting the line hard, like we have practiced so many times at training. Leave your smiles at home on Wednesday, because you will need to train the house down if you want to win back your form from previous weeks. I didn't enjoy writing this -You guy's need to FIRE UP so I can go back to writing happy stories, of how the fierce Dragon destroyed the enemy with it's fiery breath :-) The good news is that we won the game and the Val Kearns Memorial Shield for our club, so congratulations to Engadine. Great teams win games, even when they don't play so good. You all earned your medals, trophies and gifts, and the game was played in good spirits so well done boys.
Tries to Harry, Jayden, Sam, and Blake, whilst Daniel & Dane kicked goals. Man of the match was Harrison Noakes -You showed good strength to get up from some of those hits you took. Good work buddy.
Awarded by Mr Kearns: Ethan was awarded the player of the match and I have to say he earned it. Well done son and remember that pain only lasts a moment, the medal you get to keep forever.
Round 8 U9Cs V Taren Point
|
A great game of footy again this week by our boys. We played Taren Point and came away with a hard fought 20-8 win. This game had everything. Hard defence by both sides and even better attacking play especially by the mighty Dragons. Paul ,Dylan, Hayden & Samuel really laid a great go forward foundation for us strong running. This allowed our backs to see plenty of ball which resulted in some great backline moves. Cam & Tyler scored a try each as did Luke with some smart dummy half running close to the Titans line. The standout performance this week came from TJ who organised the team and lead the defence. This saw him score 2 tries. But it was our quiet achievers that are making the difference in this side with Josh, Blake, little Ryan and Joel who put in each week doing their jobs that is starting to show how good this side can be. Each week the boys improve another area of play both as a team and as individual players. It all starts with a renewed attitude at training during the week that is showing out on the field on game day. Still along way to go in the season but with performances like the last 2 weeks and the boys believing in each other they could go all the way. I am super proud of you boys keep working hard. Matt
12A v Gymea - Draw 12-12 Round 8
A great result against the team that have been runners' up in the A division of the age group for the last 3 years.
In the first round they got us 12-10 but this time we kicked both goals from wide out to get a well earned draw.
We were down 12-0 at halftime running up hill at the Zac but showed tremendous commitment and patience in the second half to peg them back.
Those who witnessed the game know it was a top quality match for 12 year olds.
Man of the Match was Ryan Longville who set up a brilliant try for Jake Wheeler with a lovely grubber kick and then later he kicked the match levelling goal from out wide with around 10 seconds left on the clock.
Our damaging Centre Joel Collier who scored a determined try carrying defenders across the line with him with only 90 seconds left on the clock also won an award.
Braiden Broadstock had a powerhouse game in the second row and Matheson Johns had a very solid game on the wing and both duly won awards.
The main award winner on the day however, was Kieran Levin who played his 100th game for the mighty Dragons a tremendous effort for a 12 year old.
Keep up the good work boys!

Golden Oldies Day – Sutherland Oval, Sunday the 18th of July - See attached document for full details.
Thankyou; Last Friday we held our Club Luncheon and what a great afternoon this was. I don’t believe he was recognised for his efforts on the day but a Massive Thanks must go to Grahame Wagener who pretty much single handed organised the afternoon which we all had such a good time at. Being part of organising these days in the past I know the effort that goes into them and to do this on your own is an amazing effort and one you should be congratulated for. Well done Grahame and I know there are quite a few of us that look forward to next year’s luncheon following the success of this one.
A-Grade V’ Como – round 8 – Won – 42-16
As in most weeks, everyone put in a huge effort today but a Big Congratulations must go to Scott Nancarrow who played his 200th game for the Club today and did so in the only way he knows how with a sensational game up front. Congratulations from all your team mates and the Club and we hope to see you playing for the Mighty Dragons for many years to come.
It has been five long years since we have managed to get a win over Como and what a good victory this was today against some very determined competitors. We got the early break in the game with a penalty being awarded our way within easy kicking range and Jason Beare made sure the first points of the afternoon went our way. With a team such as Como it was important we made the most of the situation and kept the pressure on Como and like a well oiled machine this is what we did so well eventually seeing Nathan Harris rewarded with not one but two tries. Some weeks ago we played Nathan Harris in the No 6 jersey and as the biggest Five-Eight getting around in the Comp he proved that he is best left in the Centres and he certainly showed this today when he posted two early tries that got us away to the lead we were after. When this guy is going forward in full flight it is a pleasure to watch and even better watching the opposition try and hold him.
As always it was our big forward pack that set the foundation this afternoon but credit must go to new comer this year Tom Iacono. With Mick Newton away, Tom slipped into the No11 jersey and proved that he is a worthy recipient to wear Micks jersey. Tom absolutely smashed everything and would have easily led the tackle count at the half time break. With a further try to Pat Carr and James Andrew and with Jason Beare on target with the boot seen us go to the half time break 26-4 up.
Trent Croft got proceedings underway in the second half with a nice try under the post but it wasn’t long after this that Como was awarded a penalty in front of their equivalent of our Hill and now with the support of the Hill they did lift and for a while we did allow them back into the game. For a while they tried their best to bash us out of the game but it was our forward guys who once again stood up to the challenge and delivered back everything and more that Como sent our way and it wasn’t long before we had them and their Hill realising they weren’t going to get us today. It was pleasing to see our very solid forward pack dish back everything that Como threw our way and never once take a backward step, in-particular Nathan Bullock who just kept smiling at the opposition as if to say is that the best your got?
Late tries to both Matt Stubbs and Pat Carr sealed the win and gee this was one good win to get.
Lastly, special mention must go to our newly recruited Ball Boy Bailey Ferguson. Bailey made his way into the side as if he has been doing this for years and under the guidance of both Kendel Flint and Scott Fleming did a sensational job in supporting all the team both on and off the field. We look forward to you being part of this team for the remainder of the season and once again from all your mates in the A-Grade squad thanks for a wonderful job today.

A Reserve v Como LOST 20 - 12
We were beaten but definitely not disgraced by the competition leaders. Our fellows played with pride to the best of their ability and this game was really much closer than the score board indicated. Como had a well drilled attack. They completed sets and then executed the kick chase. That combined with some dubious decisions kept us out of possession in our own half for long periods and despite some very spirited defence we went in 2 tries down at half time. Welcome back to “Sarge”Judd O’Shea who got this weeks hit of the week and then followed it up with a few more. “The Panther” Vili Na’baa in the front row had another big game. Hooker, Steve “milky” Coughlan had another good game too. He just never gives in. Steve “Rusty” Ring deserves special mention also for another fine game. The “King” Blake Cole on the wing scored a good try and “the Champ” scored a good try too. Scotty “the freight train” Frater had a bit of an unhappy time with the boot but was rewarded for his efforts with a late try. There was a strong feeling at half time that we were getting the upper hand with our grinding defence and could wear them down. We nearly did. Our boys put 3 tries on them but we could not kick a goal. We certainly gave them a fright and will be genuine contenders if we can get the points required to make the semi-finals. |
