Team Reports

Round 1: 6 Green V Aquinas      Loss      36-8

This was our entire teams 1st ever game of footy and it won’t be forgotten for a long time. It was a very rough game with head high gang tackles and this unfortunately left a few of our boys injured and upset. At one stage our bench had more players than the field and they did not want to come on the field again. In 11 years of coaching I have never wanted to walk my team off the field, but it came close today.

On a more positive note, Kurt scored his 1st official Try with some great speed and a great step, and Tyson scored his 1st with some quick thinking, and a dive straight through the Aquinas Defence.

Round 2: 6 Green V St Pats        Loss       40-0

What a fantastic game of  football. The St Pats coach held his team back a little in defence to give our boys some room to move. All the boys got to have a few runs each and enjoyed there 1st (fun) game of League. A few more of the boys got in there and tackled and we looked much more organised as a team.

It was our 1st Home game of the season and our 1st with Awards. The lucky winners this week were Sam, Drew and Rory who all made some great chases and some Try saving tackles.

Round 3: 6 Green V Bosco          Loss       36-8

With the sun shining and a 9:00am kick-off, it was the perfect setting for a game of footy. The boys are starting to look more structured around the ruck and are getting to know the sound of my voice. Some of the younger ones are learning the Hooker/1st receiver roles and this is minimising our dropped ball.

Kurt scored two fantastic tries and saved 3 or 4 Tries with some great tackles.

Awards went to Jai W for a speedy 25 metre run (just need to work on direction), and Nick and Owen who both take the ball and run straight into the defence. No sideways running for these 2 boys.

Round 4: 6 Green V De La          Loss       24-8

What an improvement. Everyone wanted to run, everyone wanted to tackle. Rory and Tyson made us heaps of ground with every touch of the ball and both tackled well. Drew and Samuel protected their wings and saved many Tries which kept the score a bit lower this week. Nick and Jai W both got knocked flying in some very hard tackles and both got back up with big smiles.

Kurt added another 2 Tries to his personal tally and awards were won by Jye Garvey who was involved in everything and is improving each week, Tyson who made us heaps of ground and was involved in a lot of tackles. The other award was won by Fynn who also got very involved and had some very nice runs.

Round 5:

6 Green V DLS Blue    Lost  36-4

6 Red V Taren Point Titans  Won  22-12

6 Blue V Gymea Gorillas Green  Lost 28-4

7 Red V Taren Point Titans  Lost 16-4

7 Blue V DLS  Lost  10-8

7 Green V Kurnell Stingrays  Won  52-8

8A V DLS  Won  30-12

8B V Taren Point Titans  Won 32-24

8C’s V Gymea    Won 38-6

A different kind of match this week by our little men. We played Gymea with a convincing win of 38-6, however it was a unusual type of game. We defended well throughout the game but the boys didn’t seem to really be firing. Our attack was messy and there seemed to be something missing. We were bunched and out of sorts. After playing like a team the previous 2 weeks it was only for two great individual performances from both Ryans that got us the game. Both these guys defended strongly and ran hard all game. There efforts rewarded with both scoring three tries. A big thanks to Max O'Shea from the U/7s for playing up and helping us out. His efforts rewarded with a try and goal. I really feel that if the boys had stuck to our game plan the score may well have been closer to 50. The effort our guys are showing at training is starting to pay off. Keep it up boys we are all proud of  you.

9As  vs DE LA 1 WON   10-6

Another weekend of footy saw another one of the competitions big guns cut down to size by this hard working dragons outfit. In the wet conditions we had to play tight with our front row trio of Bull, Blocker and the Axe ploughing through the mud and the DeLa forwards we had enough field position for Simsy to score a smart hookers try. It wasn’t long before DeLa equalled the score and were pressing our line for the lead. Maddog DC (defensive captain) and Knuckels pulled of some great hits up the middle to inspire the boys to hold them out till half time. The second half saw DeLa change tactics and attack us out wide, but there was no way through our second line of defence, with some classic cover tackles by Slippery, and Snapper. Lachy and Bruiser were also solid in defence and hard to handle in attack. With our half duo of The Bullant and The Rooster having the defence in two minds, The Bullant pulled of the match winner with a perfect kick out wide for the Animal to score a great try. Special mention to our new buy Josh The Mechanic Milross who ripped into the opposition with out fear, looking forward to more of that.

Thanks Mark & Jock.

9B V Cronulla-Caringbah Black Cats  Lost  24-0

Well, what a weekend for football! After raining all week we didn’t know whether we would finally get our long awaited first game in C grade, but some how the sky’s parted and the game was on. Finally we looked the goods in our new grade, there was some strong running by Logan, Ryan, Harry and some brilliant tackling by Billy with support from Kane. Four points down at half time and we were in with a chance. Then the rain came down again and so did the game, not sure whether it was hypothermia or the mud in their eyes but we fell to pieces. Not to worry boys, if we can turn our first half efforts into the whole game no one will stop us.

10B V Gymea Gorillas   Won 32-12

10C V Gymea Gorillas  Won  20-10

11A V St Pats  Won  24-10

11B V Gymea Gorillas  Won 10-6

12B V DLS  Lost 20-0

13B V DLS  Won  50-0

14B V Aquinas Colts  Won 22-4

16A V Gymea Gorillas  Lost  14-10

17A V Gymea Gorillas  Drew  6 all

21 V DLS  Won  20-14

A-Grade Report – V’ Como-Jannali – round 7 – Anzac Oval – 31/5/09 – Lost 10-4

Yes folks, you have read the above correctly “our first loss for the season”.

This game had all the makings for a tuff battle and that is what was delivered. Como turned up at Anzac with one very basic mission in mind and that was to play basic, simple footy and knock us off our running streak of wins and prove to all that they are a force in this competition and that is exactly what they did.

Anzac oval resembled that of a mud wrestling ring due to the rain that we have experienced and with showers forecast for the day, it just added to the excitement of this clash.

We won the toss and elected to provide Como the up hill run in the second half. From the kick-off we looked the dominant side and were rewarded with the first 4 points of the day when Mark Stewart crossed the line 10 minutes into the game. In one of his rare occasions, Mitch missed his kick at goal, but in saying this he was kicking from pretty much the side line, whilst standing in a foot of water kicking into a gusty breeze with rain pouring down on him.

We played a further 10 minutes where we still dominated the play until this run of play came to a screaming holt and the tide had turned in the favour of Como seeing Mick Newton sent to the bin for 10 minutes. Playing a man down whilst running up hill against a team hell bent on winning this game finally took its toll on us when Como crossed our line with 6 minutes until half time and successfully converting seeing them go to the break up 6 points to 4.

With some carefully chosen words from the Coach, we came out the second half fired up but Como were equally as pumped up and although we spent a majority of the time attacking their line we just couldn’t seem to execute the things that we know we can do so well. Como was relentless in milking penalties and forcing us into making silly mistakes which resulted in them winning this clash 10 – 4.

Como got us this time but I know we have the talent and the passion to beat them going forward. We will take a lot out of today’s game as a team and be all that better prepared for when we next meet.

All players gave their all today and it is always hard to single out players, especially in a men’s team but I feel the following lads should get a mention as their team

mates made mention of their efforts and they are Tye Fleming, Trent Croft, Mark Stewart, Nathan Rose, Nathan Harris and our Captain Andrew Johnston

who lead this team like a true Captain and gave his all constantly leading by example!

 A-Reserves Report – V’ Como-Jannali – round 7 – Anzac Oval – 31/5/09 – Won on forfeit

Unfortunately Como forfeited today leaving us with the 2 points but minus a game.

Special thanks must go to Richard Lambert from Channel 7 (player sponsor to Nathan Jones) for making the long trip to Anzac by train to see the A-Res side play only to have Como forfeit on us. I believe it was quite a lengthy trip for Richard to Anzac and I trust you enjoyed the A-Grade game.

Without a game to play Glen Dryland from our A-Res side took to putting his time into modelling our Club Shorts. Glen’s after a bit of modelling work after hours if you know of any agencies keen on taking him up?
