Team Reports

A-Grade Report – V’ Hurstville United – round 2 – Anzac Oval - 26/4/09

Our first hit out for the season on home turf had all the makings of a great afternoon of footy and that is what was delivered. To add to this it was great to see two players back playing for the Dragons in Nathan Rose and Lee Wilson. Both these guys are experienced footballers and have been involved with the Dragons for many years and we are definitely the better off to have them as part of our squad….Welcome back!!! When it came to size we were definitely the under dog, but any doubts on our ability were soon disbursed from the kick-off. We won the toss and elected to give Hurstville the up-hill run come second half. But the script didn’t go to plan seeing Hurstville cross the line first on the back end of some sloppy play and by our lads and handing them 3 sets of 6’s in a row within the first 10 minutes of the game. Not long after Paul Smith crossed the line to make it four all. With 15 min’s to go Hurstville go over (un-converted try) leaving the score line 8-4 Hurstville way. With 5 minutes left on the clock before half time, Trent Croft snuck over the line in what was a very valuable try going into halftime and Mitch Neylan converting making it 10-8 Engadine’s way. The second half got underway with an unlucky bounce of the ball which handed the opposition a perfect set of six on our goal line. Not long after Goode (Jared Goode) was sent for a 10 minute break which left us a little weak out wide and eventually handed Hurstville a try out wide but like the first half, this was on the back-end of continually giving Hurstville another set of six leaving the score line 12-10 Hurstville’s way. It was from this point we lifted a gear (With the backing of a very supportive and boisterous Hill - Well done folks) and put on some entertaining football resulting in a further 24 points with 17 minutes to go. Trent Croft was the first to score following on from a brilliant break by Christopher Woods and Mitch Neylan converting to make the score line 16-12. Not 5 minutes later Aaron Palmer (Coach) crossed the line in one of his usual rampaging runs to make the score line 22-12 following Mitch Neylans conversion. Further tries went to Shane Chapman and Michael Newton with both converted by Mitch Neylan, leaving the final score line 34 to 12 Engadine’s way. On a sad note, I wish to inform you all that during the week one of our team mates “Kyle Wade” has been hit by a car and as a result is currently nursing some very serious injuries. We wish Kyle a speedy recovery and look forward to approximately nine weeks time when his doctor has indicated he should be OK to re-join us.

 A-Reserves – V’ Sutherland – round 2 – Anzac Oval - 26/4/09

We played some good football in a Round Three 52 to 18 victory over Sutho at Anzac in a game played in good spirit by both clubs. Nine tries came from strong line breaks, unselfish hand-offs and great backing up with Kane Ryan showing the way. But it can only happen when the forwards cart the ball up strongly and keep the opposition on the back foot in defence as we did today. And our handling was much improved. Players played with better ball security and turned the ball inside very nicely today. The blustery conditions did not favour the outside backs. However, the backs supported the line breaks on the edge of the ruck well. One in particular by Judd O'Shea was memorable. 3 great tries to the Skipper and a try to Tommy Hubbard resulted. Skip kicked 8 goals for 28 points! Good tries too were scored by Benny Cotton, Nick Lee, Lee Wilson and Mick Warren. Todd Vicary was and is consistently reliable. Kurt Marsh had a much improved game. Our second rowers were outstanding. Nick Lee who had a strong all round game in attack and defence deservedly got the points for best and fairest just ahead of Daniel Brubaker who played very well. All the forwards had good games from the starting line-up to the bench. The players vote for their man of the match at the end of the game. There was 6 votes for 6 different forwards today. Notably strong running games by Mini, Wazza, and Dennis Marsh. Competition for selection is very healthy. You must turn up to training to ensure you get a run next week.

 A-Grade - 2 May 2009, Round 4 Engadine vs Kurnell at Anzac Oval. Won 44 – 0.

Firstly I would like to thank Mick from “Micks Quality Family Meats” and Grahame Wagener for the feast they are cooking up every Thursday night after training. The standard this year is exceptional and I know the lads are enjoying this whilst getting together after training. Many thanks Mick and Wags!!!!!! We played Kurnell who are sitting in at 10th place on the current ladder out of 11 sides. We won the toss and elected to give Kurnell the up-hill run in the second half and for all you folks who aren’t familiar with Anzac, this is like handing our guys a couple of extra players come the second half. From the kick-off our forwards in Nathan Harris and Nathan Bullock really lead the way with some hard hitting runs and it was only a matter of time before we began putting points up on the scoreboard. Shane Chapman and Nathan Rose have a great combination working out wide and it wasn’t long before they put our first points on the board with Rosie crossing over in the 10th minute of the game and Mitch Neylan converting to take us to a 6 nil lead. With 10 min’s left until half time, Mitch Neylan goes over and converts his own try taking the game to 12 nil. Thinking this is it until half time, new recruit Adam Goode comes smashing through the Kurnell defence like they were there for a picnic to score a sensational try and take us into the half-time break, 18 nil following Mitch Neylans conversion. At this stage I would like to welcome back Adam Garvey. Aaron Palmer (Coach) combined with Kendall Flint are doing a sensational job seeking out and getting quality footballers such as Adam back to the Club. After 5 years on the sideline, Adam came out today and played a game good enough to see him get a start down at the district club. Welcome back Adam and we look forward to the year ahead for you!!! Within 7 minutes into the second half, Andrew Johnston makes a beautiful break and off load to Shane Chapman seeing him cross over under the post taking us to a 24 nil lead following Mitch’s conversion. It was only 3 minutes later that Andrew Johnston crosses the line following a multitude of players getting involved and converted by Mitch to take the score to 30 nil. Further tries to Adam Goode and Shane Chapman seeing us take out the game 44 to nil. Our 3 points this week went to Scott Nancarrow and what a well deserved award this was. From the get go, Scott provided plenty of heart and go forward. Mitch Neylan picked up the 2 points this week and we are very fortunate to have Mitch in our side. His ability to lead the lads around the park is sensational and his kicking game just seals off the perfect package. Our 1 point this week went to Adam Goode  playing in the 2nd row provided some very fast, hard hitting runs seeing him go over for 3 tries and to top it all off he did this whilst playing with his brother Jarred for the first time. Well done mate and I’m sure I will be writing more on you in future reports.

 A-Reserves - 2 May 2009, Round 4 Engadine Dragons vs Hurstville United at AnzacOval - Won 28 - 20.

Hurstville fielded a big physical side. We were running uphill against the wind and we took time to settle down. They employed niggling tactics and second phase play to lead us 10 nil at the break. Then Coach Adam Jones steadied the ship at half-time reinforcing what proved to be an effective game plan to settle the ruck, kick long and play the game in their quarter. The Dragons bravely charged back in attack and defence against their much bigger opponents in the second half. Captain, Dennis "the Tank" Marsh led from the front in a rousing performance. Nathan "Bones" Jones hit  the defence line with shuddering impact. Danny "Mr Consistency" Brubaker had another good game Ben Walker was very reliable on the left wing. Mitch "the Axe" Hatch derserves special mention for an exceptional effective low tackling defensive display. Kurt "Slippery" Marsh totally dominated his opposite number and scored to 2 vital tries on the right wing. Marsheys everywhere! Tommy "the Neck" Hubbard was deceptively elusive scoring  a try that turned the game and there was a welcome return by Glen "the Head" Dryland who to the delight of the crowd produced a tradesmanlike effort at hooker and dummy half and was rewarded with a surging try. Kane "Golden Boots"' Ryan kicked 4 beautiful goals and too fast! scored in the corner. It was a great fighting victory but we need to tighten up our defence. Teams are putting too many points on us. Hurstville scored a couple of  late tries. The final score of 28-20 was too close and did not really indicate the ascendency we achieved..

Best & Fairest: 1. Dennis Marsh 2. Kurt Marsh 3. Glen Dryland

U/21's match report Round 3 V Bosco  won 10-4

Again another game versus our "arch rivals" the Bosco Chihuahuas. A dour struggle, unattractive to say the least. As we spoke about previously, they always lift against us and we play to their level. Loosing Ebby early didn't help our cause, as Debo had to jump in his boots and was clearly out of puff through no previous game time, but to his credit he stayed on the whole match. We gladly welcome back Dunes, and he fitted in great considering he had a full season off. At 4-0 half time score to us, dressing shed language saw us a little jaded, ANZAC day the day prior obviously not helping our cause. To the players credit they went out and scored first and we led 10-0 for most of the second half. We gave in late to let them have a consolation try 10-4 fulltime to big brother. Defensively we were good, attack terrible. We need time training with the football in our hands. Again Khan and Fordo both kicked in well with good efforts, but Milk was our best today, back in his more favoured position of hooker. Next week will be tough, the Black Cats, remembering we have lost freddy our Skipper and good kicker. He is out for 6 weeks.

Tries to Jimmy and Fordo and one goal to Jimmy.

Points went to Milk 3, Khan 2 and Fordo 1.

8C's match report Saturday May 2  Dragons vs De La Salle. Result Lost 16-12

After having a disrupted 3 weeks after our first game with minimal training our boys put in a great effort against a very competitive side.We had plenty of opportunities to win this one but a couple of missed tackles in the end caught us out.Ryan Lane opened the scoring for the mighty Dragons with a great run up the sideline covering nearly half the field. That run one of many that kept our team going forward.with some strong defence by the whole team it looked like it was going to be an easy game for the boys.Another great bust up the middle from Ryan again leading to his second try for the game.keep up the hard running mate. The second third our boys had to spend much of the time defending after making little mistakes and dropping the ball.with no reserve this week I think our boys may have got a little tired. The final third saw the game prtty evenly matched. Some good defence and hard ball running saw our little guys go close to scoring a couple of times but just couldnt get the ball over the line.A great try to TJ Connor on a last tackle play could have won the match for us however it was two missed tackles that cost the boys two late tries with about 3-4mins remaining. Overall a great effort by the boys especially our points winners:-

3pnts TJ,2pnts:- Ryan Lane,1pnt:- Ryan Lang
