Team Reports

6 Blue RD 8 VS Joeys at Anzac 28-20  Loss

Today was a very evenly matched game. If we had not given 100%, The Joeys would have scored a lot more points as they had some very strong runners. We utilized some of our faster runners today and did not hold anyone back in defense. Jy Garvey: made some great breaks and was unlucky not to score. Chad Bonser: Man of the Match with some busting runs. Jackson Chalk: One of our best defenders today. Nick Freeman: Set up a Try from a “Dummy Tap” Jai Williams: Kept getting smashed but kept coming back for more.  Rory Cartwright: Made us many meters with some great runs. Luke Wallace: Although injured in the 1st minute still managed 2 Tries. Kurt Peychers: Bagged another Hat trick and threw in a “shoulder palm”.

6 Blue RD 9 VS Cronulla at Endeavour Oval 44 – 4  WIN

What a game. We only had 7 players today (down to 5 for a while) so the boys had to come out tackling and that is exactly what they did. We tried a few set plays that didn’t work but the boys sure had fun trying. Thanks to Luke and Kurt who spent some time on the sideline (to allow Cronulla a chance) and to the rest of the Team who stepped up to cover them in defense.
Nick Freeman: Nicks best game ever. Made us valuable ground.
Jet Hickson: Man Of The Match tackling performance.
Rory Cartwright: 2 Tries, and his tackling is back.
Jy Garvey: 2 Tries, very solid in defense.
Jai Williams: 1 TRY, 2 Off loads resulting in Tries.
Kurt Peychers: 3 Tries, 1 Goal (from only 3 runs)

Luke Wallace: 2 Tries, 1 Goal, (plus 1 Try given to Team mate)

8A Engadine Vs St Josephs - Won 50 - 4

RETURN OF THE DRAGON!

It was a very cold & windy morning, so cold in fact that Mitch wore long pants! But whilst the parents complained about the cold, 9 blue Smurfs were going through their warm up routine, & there was a look of fire in their eyes. The Dragon is back, I whispered to myself... let them loose upon the enemy. Today the Dragon breathes fire!! Daniel kicked it deep & we kept them pinned in their 20 for two sets before Dane charged & then popped it back for Ethan to deal the first blow. Joey's tried to hit back and nearly got there, but Harry ran him down & took him over the sideline. Our defense was tested for a while but it held, & then it was our turn with Jayden breaking their line with a great elusive run that lead to Ethan scoring again. There were was good hit-up from Daniel, & Harrison had several big runs, one straight after a head high shot which opened the door for Jayden to bag himself a great solo try. In the second Sam took a great long side stepping run & Blake lined up & charged up for a good solo try. Great hard runs from the two H's, lead to Jayden finding another gap to go over again. Our best team defense came when great teamwork held them out from scoring & then runs from Blake, Sam, Ethan, took the ball the length of the field, with Dane taking the final charge to score a great team try. Another great kick from Daniel saw the opposition knock on & Harry didn't waste time making them pay with a solo try. Steven cemented his authority in the middle by smashing a player in a tackle, and Jayden caught them napping again to score his third from the restart. Harry again chased and saved a try when they broke our line, & good runs from Daniel, Sam and Harrison took us back to their goal line, & in the next set we forced them in goal. From the scrum Jayden went over for his 4th try, & what a way to celebrate your Birthday :-) Goals to Harry, Blake, Sam, Harrison, Jayden & Dane got 2.Man of the match was Steven Green. What a great defensive effort from the little man who won’t take a backward step. Footy is a fun team sport, and it's made easier when you play as a team. Remember that & you boys will have a great year & go a long way in this game. Happy Birthday to Tye who celebrated his 40th over the weekend -Thanks for your dedication to the boys & their fitness.

9C Round 8

Up, up the Dragons. Maybe a little carried away but what a awesome display of footy from our little men. We played our biggest rival Bosco and won 30-8. From Tyler our fullback thru to Ryan Lane in the engine room each player was great. The boys stuck to our game plan all game. Our defense was rock solid only a couple of missed tackles that led to tries our only hiccup. But wow what an attacking display. TJ organized the team great. At every opportunity the boys spread the ball wide giving our backs some room to show the skills we had been practicing all week at training. For the first time this year our kicking game led by TJ was great with one kick resulting in a try to Cam. But it was little Joel who stole the show with two great individual tries in which he beat several players on both occasions giving him his first man of the match award. Tries also to Luke, Dylan and TJ who crossed twice. The score could have been bigger had we kicked goals so some practice is coming during the holiday break. Our season is coming together great but still a lot of improvement left in this team. Each week we improve another area in our game so I am really proud of each player.

11B’s Round 2: Versus De LaSalle 2 at Anzac Oval. Won 16-12

Coming to Anzac Oval off a 54-0 win against De LaSalle 3, De LaSalle 2’s biggest concern was to not beat Engadine by too much. They wanted to avoid being put up to the A’s. They opened the scoring after 4 minutes of play and converted to go to a 6 point lead. It only took 3 more minutes for the boys to strike back when Tripi put a well placed kick through for Luke to claim our 1st 4 pointer. Still being 2 points down Kayne made a dart out of dummy half on the 5th and put the ball down over the chalk, only to be denied by the ref who thought the dummy half couldn’t score. De LaSalle had a big No13 that was running riot, he made a break and ran the length of the field only to drop the ball over the line. With 5 minutes left in the first half, the boys put on a set play and Brodie was over to put the good guys in front and with Greeny’s Jamie Soward impersonation, the Dragons were up 10-6. The boys were defiantly not playing as well as they could and this showed with them letting a soft try in on the half time siren. De LaSalle had whole new respect for us in the second half and for the next 15 minutes nobody even looked like scoring. 5 minutes left until full time and being down 10-12, Kayne made another scoot out of dummy half and put a great pass on for Greeny to go in out wide. Noakesy added the 2 for a 16-12 lead. The last 5 minutes saw De La Salle rise to another level in attack but Engadine was up for the task and held on for the win. Man of the match went to Tripi and other awards went to Brains and Luke for their tireless defense.

11B’s Round 3: Versus Gymea at Corea Road. Won 18-6

This week Engadine was the team feeling overly confident. The whole first half was an arm wrestle with Gymea, a clearly bigger team, that turned up to play some footy. After 8 minutes of beating each other up the ball went wide and Ibby put a well placed kick through for himself to open the account. Greeny’s goal added the 2 for a 6-0 lead. Half time couldn’t come quick enough, with more dropped ball and mistakes than they’ve made in years. After some constructive criticism from the coach and trainer at the break, the second half was a better game to watch. The score remained the same for the first 10 minutes until the ever reliable Greeny barged over out wide to increase the gap. Noakesy converted and things were in control at 12-0. With 5 left on the clock Gymea’s sheer size helped them over for a converted try to put them within 6 points. Not to be out done, the boys dug in and Noakesy got one for himself and Mobbsy added the 2 with a minute left on the clock. The final score 18-6. Man of the match went to Mobbsy, just over Kaynes outstanding game.

11B’s Round 4: Versus De LaSalle 3 at Captain Cook. Won 46-0

When the boys opened their account with only a minute or so on the clock, we had the feeling today’s game was going to be a bit of a walk in the park. The ball passed through almost every set of hands before Josh crossed the white stripe and Greeny converted. It only took another 2 minutes before Luke charged through some sloppy defense to take his first try of the day and Mobbsy added the 2. The boys then started practicing some of their set plays and the 10 minute mark saw Fatty get his name on the score board. Josh took the 2 points and at 18 nil up it was all too easy. A 50 metre run from Bailey saw him with 4 next to his name and 2 minutes later Greeny had himself a 4 pointer. Ibby added the 2 and we went to oranges 28 nil in front. Half time saw Dodgy feel sorry for the opposition and rested his heavy weights to try and stop the hemorrhaging of points. 8 minutes had gone in the second half and Josh was in for his second of the day, kayne converted for a 34 point lead. A few minutes later Luke barged over, with about 5 on his back, for his second and Brodie never looked like missing the goal. With 2 minutes left on the clock Tristan decided it was time to get some points himself, converting his own try to make the score 46 nil. I think DeLa wanted to invoke the mercy rule but the bell beat them to it. Congratulations to the whole team, a great game had by all. A special welcome to Ducky for his first game in Dragons colours. Man of the match went to Josh and other awards went to Greeny and Luke.

11B's Round 5: Versus Menai at Akuna. Lost 22-10

Today’s game is one I think the boys will want to forget. We arrived at Akuna after coming off a 46 nil win the week before, and they thought all they had to do was turn up to take the points. Plenty of dropped ball, missed tackles and before we knew it, it was half time and we were behind 10 nil. The half time speech from the coach and trainer had them spurred up a little going into the second half. It only took 3 minutes for Kayne to sneak out of dummy half on the last and dart over for our first 4 pointer. Down 4-10 the boys dug in with some solid defense from the forwards but obviously not enough as it only took another 4 minutes for the Roosters to respond and put on another converted try. The 30 minute mark saw an outstanding solo effort from our Captain and half back Tripi who put a little grubber through for him to score. Greeny snatched the goal and we back to 6 behind. The next 7 minutes saw the boys wrestle up and down the field. Back to back penalties to the Roosters helped them up field for another converted try to seal the victory. Let’s put this one down to experience, get back to training and come up with the points next week boys. Special thanks to Flemo for standing in as coach while Dodgy was away. Man of the match went to Taine, other awards went to Josh, Jack and Ducky.

11B's Round 6: Versus De LaSalle 2 at Captain Cook. Won 14-0

There was a fair bit of confusion leading into today’s game with it being moved between Kurnell and Captain Cook, but we all made it in the end. The boys didn’t train well at all during the week and coming up against one of the front runners in the comp we had our work cut out. The first quarter of the game was to and fro with nobody wanting to give an inch in defence. The boys were displaying some excellent sets of hands as they were putting on set play after set play. Finally De La Salle broke with well placed kick from Tripi for Greeny to grab our first 4 pointer. With 5 still on the clock in the first half we got a penalty deep in De La’s zone, Tripi scooted out of dummy half on the second to claim our second try. We went to the break 8-0 up. The second half started with the usual arm wrestle, add this with the heavy defence in 1st half and the big boys were getting tired. Fatty found himself on the wing having a rest when the ball came through the hands for him to add another 4 points. Tripi grabbed the 2 points to take the lead to 14-0 and the eventual full time score. Well done to all the boys for excellent defensive game, to keep a big mobile team like De La to nil is not an easy task. Man of the match went to Tripi who was involved in everything. Other awards went to Josh for outstanding attack and defence and Taine who was excellent under the high ball all day.

11B's Round 7: Versus St Josephs at Anzac Oval. Won 14-0

Finally the boys got back to footy, its been a long month and it showed in the early exchanges, with mistake after mistake giving Joey's plenty of ball in our half. Regardless of the lack of possession the boys really muscled up in defence, showing plenty of mongrel. When we finally got enough ball to put together a full set of six, the Joeys line broke. Fatty and Luke were almost unstoppable in attack and both were rewarded with first half try's coming off set plays. Greeny got the one goal to take us to a 10-0 lead at the break. We had it all against us in the second half, running up-hill into a strong breeze. The one thing we did have though was our human wrecking ball, Brains who sat the first half off. The defence was outstanding from both teams with the only try coming off a strong run from Noakesy in the final minute. Well done boys, keeping one of the better teams in the comp to nil is no mean feat. One thing I believe we need more practice in, is goal kicking, with only 3 from our last 8 attempts, this could cost you a game one day. Man of the match went to Fatty and other awards went to Tristan and Brains for their tireless defence. The training award went to Brodie.

A-Grade Report – V’ Cronulla-Caringbah – round 9 – Endeavour Oval    Won – 7-6

Following are some reminders for your calendar:

A-Grade Golf Day will be held on the 23rd of July at Boomerang Golf course.

Golden Oldies Day – Sutherland Oval, Sunday the 18th of July

If you were fortunate enough to catch this game you would have witnessed one of the best games of A-grade footy played in some time. It was a game that seen competition leaders play second place holders and with their side boosted with the inclusion of four of so Cronulla Rep players, and the backing of a very vocal crowd, they were certainly out to prove a point by toppling us in this game. Just on the crowd, special thanks must go to All the Engadine supporters that attended today’s game and cheered the guys on. Your support at our away games this season has been tremendous and greatly appreciated by every member of the team. With Nathan Harris and Scott Nancarrow out due to niggling injuries we were very fortunate to see the return of Dale Newton to booster our forward pack. But the real surprise of the day was the inclusion of Jake Denford back playing for the Dragons. This was Jakes first run with the A-Grade squad and he certainly slotted into the side as if he had been playing with them all season. Jakes enthusiasm to slip back into his club jersey and get back out on the paddock showed to me what playing for the Dragons and your mates is really about and why this side is travelling so well and will continue to whilst ever the club has members such as this side playing for it. Cron-Caringbah are a young fit and physical side which proved to be a real test for how well we can dig deep when the pressure is on and with Cron-Caringbah getting away to an early 4 nil lead, we certainly had some digging to do. It was around the 15th minute of the game when Dale Newton was sent from the bench and I feel that it was his inclusion coupled with Nathan “Ritto” Bullock that changed the momentum of the game back into our favor. Dale was almost fortunate to see him awarded with a try after only 5 minutes back playing but unfortunately the Ref seen things differently calling a forward pass. It was only minutes later that we were back attacking their line when Mitch Neylan gave a sensational bullet like pass onto a rampaging Aaron “Fats” Palmer resulting in a converted try and us going to the half time break 6 points to 4 up. Like the first half, the second half of the game was a real tug-o-war where both sides gave their all. Cron-Caringbah were awarded a penalty in front of our goal posts to which they elected to kick which I feel said a lot for the quality of our defense. But with the score now 6 all and the clock running out of time, this game was fast coming down to a field goal and that is what Aaron Palmer did so well when he so calmly stepped up to the plate and booted what was one of the best points of the season so far with less than 2 minutes left on the clock. It’s hard writing these reports when it comes to singling out the players for their efforts, in-particular in games such as this when everyone has played so well. This said though I feel special mention must go to Chris Woods who like the week before against Como, played a sensational game today and as a result picked up the player’s player award. Nathan Bullock, who picked up the 2 points from his team mates and had a blinder of a game. Nathan would have to be one of the hardest guys playing in the A-Grade competition. Nathan just never gives up and must have a heart the size of his chest. Tom Iacono also had another very strong game today and just seems to be getting better each week. Tom is half the size of Nathan but these guys must eat at the same place as Tom gives his all and is a real powerhouse in defense. And not to be left out, Pat Kelly not known for his speed found himself with the footy in his hands and with nothing in front of him apart from 80mtrs and a white line at the end of it, took off like he has never run before and with his legs now pumping like a worn out diesel engine he gave his all but just couldn’t get away from the opposition. Bad luck mate and I’m sure with a bit of training you will kill them next time you find yourself in this situation. In an unfortunate note for the game, we lost both Trent Croft and Andrew Johnston to injuries and we now have a wait on our hands to see the outcome of their injuries. Finally thanks to our ball boys Bailey Ferguson and Tom Carr (Pat’s younger brother) for your efforts today. A job that goes unnoticed but is certainly a huge help to our side!

Round 9 A-Reserves v Cronulla-Caringbah        Lost 32 - 14

Our run to the semis was not born on the 4th of July. We started well and completed our sets early but the wheel soon fell off. They kept turning the ball on the inside and found us out around the ruck in marker defense and up the middle. Our guys tried hard but the opposition was fitter and better organized. We went into the break 22 – 0 down. After some soul searching at the break the Dragons put on a good second half, particularly the last 10 minutes when posted our 14 points. We actually won the second half 14 -10 but too late, no cigar. Bruuey was the players pick in the forwards and “The Panther” Vili Na’baa in the front row was up there again. Loges McGlinchey and “milky” Coughlan tried hard all day. Marshy “the tank” had a good game. “Freight train” Frater scored a good try and “head”, Glen Dryland (as you didn’t know) lunged over to avoid the nudey run for the season. But then followed the 2 most remarkable plays. Firstly a try to Brayden “the Buster” Davies who, celebrating a milestone 150th game for the club scored a beautiful try after a dummy outside then a neat inside ball from Jimmy Mollard. “Golden Boots Gavin” Priestly iced the cake when he landed a delightful sideline conversion.

Player Profile

Brayden Davies

We would like to welcome Brayden back to the Dragons.
Unfortunately, in 2008 we were unable to field an under 17’s team and Brayden went to Menai to play.
Although still only 19 he is able to mix it with the older players and is playing half/fullback with the 2nd grade team.
Brayden has played 150 games over 12 seasons for the Dragons for a total of 193 points.
He has won 4 best & fairest awards, best & fairest runner-up, and has played Matthew Cup for Cronulla-Sutherland.

Good to see you back in the Dragons colours.
