Team Reports
Congratulations to Nathan Harris, Nathan Bullock, Chris Woods, Matt Stubbs from our A Grade squad for their selection to play for Cronulla JL against South Sydney JL in the Jack Gibson Cup.
The game is on this Saturday 12th June at 3pm on Shark Park. Earlier games are two U/21's. See you there.
U8A's V Cronulla Caringbah - Won 28-0
This was to be our first real test against a good quality side and admittedly we were a bit tense, as our boy's were coming to the game with a completely new plan. To their credit I think they executed it very well considering the short time they had to put it together. Well done to all the boy's. From the kick off we were on the attack and after a few settling runs, Harrison found a gap and took off down the side for a good long run. A few moments later we had to fiercely defend on our line and Dane & Sam combined in a tackle to save a try. On turn over Harry took a scoot and raced down the side to within 10 from the try line, before Dane eventually darted over for our first try. Jayden took the kick but hit the cross bar. At the break we led 4-0.From the kick off the boy's picked up were they left off, with great defence from Harrison as he made another great tackle, and our centre defence of Harry, Dane, Steven, Jayden and Daniel held out everything the enemy threw at us. On a attack we tried to keep the ball alive, and there were some good runs, one by Sam who got taken over the side as he tried to get away, and Harrison had several hard hit ups, one just after coping a hard hit moments earlier. In the second third there was some good hit ups from Blake, Ethan and Daniel, and that brought about and opportunity for Sam to score in the corner, but he was just taken over the sideline. Our defence was so good we kept them pinned in their 10 and that led to another try by Dane, and Sam converted to put us 10-0 in front. The kick off put us on the defence again, and we put a good set together and took them over the line. Our attack took us to their 20, where again we kept them pinned as they tried to go around our wall of Dragon defenders. Another passage of attack saw us nearly go over, but the offload went astray and Cronulla nearly got away from us but our defence was their to cover their break. Still in their 20 and back on attack Harry saw an opportunity and scooted over for another try and Ethan converted to make the score 16-0 at the break. From the kick off Ethan took a great hit up and that paved the way for Daniel to follow through with yet another bustling run that took us 10 out, and from there the boy's could smell fear coming from the Cronulla team as they prepared themselves for another Dragon assault, and that came from Harry who found another corner to dive over and score, whilst Harrison kicked it over to take us to 22-0. Then came a very good set of tackles with Steven taking a great one on one and then the whole team without exception worked to keep them from going forward. Unfortunately a very messy attacking set kept us from scoring, but again the Cronulla team were unable to get out of their 20, and Harry found a different corner to score on, and Blake kicked it over to take us to 28-0 The last passage of play saw Steve knock the ball out of the attacking player and that lead to Blake taking an absolutely bone rattling shoulder charge that left all of us wondering if Blake would be ok... OK you say!!! He got up, brushed the pain aside, and took the next hit up. AWSOME STUFF BLAKE. With that Jayden caught the opposition napping and took the ball up for a great little run as he always does. Man of the match was Blake. You did a lot today in defence but I wanted to focus on your strength, and by that I mean, the way in which you kept your cool and gave it to the opposition, the best way possible - by getting up to go at it again.... well done champ!
A-Reserves V’s St Josephs Drew 4 - 4
The Dragons were very courageous against a much bigger team apparently comprised mainly of the Joeys disbanded A Grade side. Our team also had to overcome a severely lopsided penalty count. It was looking like they were going to belt us out of it in the first half when we were copping big hits tackle after tackle. In the forwards we had to tough it out. The Dragons bravely weathered the storm and put on another strong defensive display in return. “Chicken sausage” Benny Cotton got hammered a few times but refused to surrender. Instead he hit back with a couple of runs that split them right up the middle. Good games by Ben “Lubey” Leahy, again, second rower Kieran “salad sandwich” Smith and Steve “Rusty” Ring off the bench. Our only points were posted in the first half by centre Scotty “the freight train” Frater. In the backs Brayden “Buster” Davies at halfback and 5/8 Jimmy Mollard had good games and we generally stifled the attack of the opposition by getting the line up very quickly in defence. The second half was much like the first. Some of their shots were a bit high. They came out and tried to bash us out of it. But they could not because there is a very good spirit in this side. They are all good mates and they all back in each other in the blue. They all turn up to training and listen to Super Coach Fleming and they all want to play. “The tank” Dennis Marsh happily took the field when a selected player was not available and ripped into the opposition. At different times in the games played so far this season our guys have showed all the aspects required to make up a competition winning team. We just have to put it all together.
6 Blue RD 5 VS De La Salle 18 – 16 Loss
De La Salle had some big runners who were hard to contain but with up to 8 of our players in most tackles, we were able to keep the score line close. Our boys played as a Team and made this a most exciting game. In attack, we kept the ball alive with some amazing offloads.
Nick Freeman: Fantastic game and a Man of the Match performance.
Jai Williams: Tackled all day long. Loves his footy.
Jet Hickson: Improving every week and running strong.
Rory Cartwright: Ran the ball well and made us many metres.
Jy Garvey: 1st off the line to tackle and ran strongly.
Chad Bonser: Got involved and made some nice hit ups.
Jackson Chalk: A tackling machine, around the ankles every time.
Kurt Peychers: The offload king, involved in 3 Tries and a Goal.
Luke Wallace: Bagged a Hat-trick and kicked a Goal.
Go Dragons
12A v De La Salle Lost 16-4
Unfortunately this was our worst performance of the season. We had a bad preparation with a mixed up communication of the venue due to wet weather and a number of boys went to Kurnell instead of Captain Cook and we had blokes virtually jumping the fence to run on for the kick off.
From there it got worse as one our boys was under the kick off and another boy tried to take the ball at the same time and we were penalised as the second boy was judged off side. They scored directly from that error and we were down 6-0 straight away.
We recovered to be down 10-4 at halftime but could not make up the leeway and they scored right at the end to make the score-line look comfortable but the game was far from it and was a tight struggle that still could have gone either way.
Man of the Match was Juye Ebb who really lifted on the day and put on some really good hits.
6 Blue RD 6 VS Aquinas 36-12 Loss
Today was one of our harder games. All the boys ran out from the clubhouse ready for a big game, and all tried very hard, but the size and experience of The Aquinas was too much in the end.
Nick Freeman: Used his palm and almost broke the line.
Jai Williams: No dropped ball and some solid tackles.
Jet Hickson: Loves his footy and made us valuable ground.
Rory Cartwright: Man of the Match Performance.
Jy Garvey: Had a lot of ball and ran very well.
Chad Bonser: Our secret weapon from the bench.
Jackson Chalk: Saved a certain try with the tackle of the century.
Kurt Peychers: 1 Try, 4 Offloads and a million tackles.
Luke Wallace: 2 Tries, 3 Offloads and a million tackles.
