Club Sportsman’s Lunch

Our major fundraiser for the year will be held on Friday 25th June at the St. Moritz room upstairs in the Engadine Tavern. The cost will be $100 per person and will include entertainment, MC, beer, wine and two course lunch. Starts at 12.15 and concludes around 4.30.

It is most important that the entire club supports this function as it will be the major source of income for the club and will contribute greatly to the huge cost of replacing football jumpers for next season. At the very least, we expect to have to replace half the club jumpers in 2011.

We hope to be able to return each teams support with a contribution to the end-of-season plans.

To make this day a great success can you, or someone you know, contribute sporting memorabilia and/or raffle prizes?  It would be a tremendous help to the club if you could contribute or ask around and encourage others. Contributions can be made by contacting the club President – Grahame Wagener – 95204535.

U6 Red Engadine Dragons Vs Cronulla Caringbah 18 - 18 Draw

Today’s game against Black cats was a cracker. We started a bit slow but scored great tries to get back to the lead. Both teams where very even the whole game. Unlike last week where we made no mistakes a couple of dropped passes was the difference. I think the Cronulla team has played for a couple of years so it was a great effort to get a draw.

Great tackling from all the boys on our line was a highlight. Hard decision for man of the match with all boys playing well. Look forward to training this week to improve even more for next week’s game. Well done guys.

Tries. Zane 2. Taj 1. Lachlan Jones 1.
Goals. Zane 1.

Man of the Match. Lachlan Grainger.

6 Blue RD 1 V’s St Joeys at Kareela Oval

20 – 18 Win

Our 1st game as a Team and a great game it was. 2 evenly matched Teams scoring Try for Try and giving all the mums and dads some excitement. Our tackling game was great but in the end it was some great Team work that got us over the line. We played with 7 on the field and all the kids enjoyed their 1st game.

Chad Bonser: 1st ever game. Had some great runs and always had a smile.

Kurt Peychers: Scored 2 great Tries and made 2 fantastic offloads resulting in Tries.

Luke Wallace: 1st ever game. Scored 3 Trys and tackled great.

Nick Freeman: Has developed a palm and still runs as strong as ever.

Jai Williams: 1st out of the line to tackle and won the Man of The Match.

Jet Hickson: 1st ever game but looked like a pro. Really enjoyed his 1st Game.

Jackson chalk: Around the ankles is the only way Jackson tackles. Some natural ability.

6 Blue RD 2 V’s Cronulla Caringbah at Anzac Oval

42 – 12 Win

Our 2nd game as a Team and another great game it was. We tried to help Cronulla a bit by giving them some players so a big thanks to Jet and Jai. All the boys had a great game and it was fantastic to see every player on the day score a try or 2. The score could have been 60 to 0, but as Cronulla were a brand new Team, I sent Kurt and Luke for a few drink breaks which enabled Cronulla to even up the score a little. A fun day was had by all and EVERY player earned themselves an award...

Nick Freeman: Scored his 1st ever Try.

Jai Williams:  Scored his 1st ever Try.

Jet Hickson:  Scored his 1st ever Try.

Jackson chalk:  Scored his 1st ever Try.

Rory Cartwright: Scored his 1st ever Try.

Jy Garvey:  Scored his 1st ever Try and then scored his 2nd.  Man of The Match

Kurt Peychers:  Scored 2 Tries and set up a few others.

Luke Wallace: Kicked his 1st ever Goal and scored 1 Try.

Well done Drago

6 Greens Vs Cronulla/Caringbah WON 32 - 12

Best game of the year from the boys. The boys where pumped up for their first home game and after screaming their lungs out in the dressing sheds hit the field running. Result came from a great effort across the team in both defence and attack. It was good to see all the kids getting in there for tackles and getting back into the line. Well done boys!!!!

Reward winners for the day

Lachlan Colenso - Man of the Match - Tackled non-stop all game, scored 4 tries....top effort across the park

Kooper Bannister - Great game ...Scored a couple of tries, one of them from his own kick off after a knock on from Cronulla

Fynn Williams - Best game of the year from Fynn....Made a string of tackles in a row and kept the teams spirits up with some mid field, mid game theatre.

7 Green Engadine Vs Bosco - WON 22-18

What another great game to watch. Our boys went out ready to play and scored from the kick off. Eventually the fast game and the heat slowed the boys down which resulted in Bosco scoring and going to the lead for the first time in the match. After a well deserved drink and a talk from the coach the boys bounced back.  In this third we had some great runs from Logan, goal to Ty, try saving tackle from Owen, and great defence from Aaron, Samuel, Mitchell and Flynn. We were now 14-14.

At the restart we had a terrific run from Kye who was unlucky not to score himself. The boys kept passing the ball around which saw Ty score out wide. Bosco were now on the attack however, due to an intercept by Drew we regained possession and kept the play in their half.

Bosco lifted the pressure and kept running at the boys hard. We showed some great defence on our try line but Bosco managed to get over the line for one more try.

Great game boys.Special thanks goes to Flynn and Kye from the under 6’s for helping out with the subs.

Try Scorers: Logan, Ty

Goal Scorers: Ty

Man of the Match: Ty

U/8A Whalers Engadine Vs Titans - Engadine won 60-0

Another victory to the Dragons who versed a different Titan team to the ones they beat last Saturday night. Probably not as tough an opposition but still the result was a resounding win to our boys.
The game was very good in terms of defence, which is where we are making huge improvements, not only as individuals but as a team. Our smaller players like Jayden are working very hard up the middle with some good down low tackles and with the likes of Dane, Daniel and Harry coming in over the top to put the player down. They are all putting in a great effort to make our front line almost impossible to break.
Out wide Blake, Ethan, Sam, and Harrison are delivering some punishing tackles that are leaving the opposition wondering what on earth just hit them. There were a few back to back tackles that were made and that's great to see at such a young age.
Our attack play has been our strength in the past and we continue to show good form, as 5 of the 11 tries were solo efforts, but I think everyone would agree that seeing Steven pump his little legs to go over for one in the corner, was the most memorable, and a special treat for dad. Well done champ.
Also there are signs of great teamwork beginning to show as players are looking to offload, and keep the ball alive rather then to go to ground with it. It's great to see, and if it continues it will add another layer of skill to our game.
Harry just edged out Blake, Dane, and Ethan on the tackle count, whilst the rest were almost all on equal numbers so good work everyone.
Tries to Harry Dane and Ethan whilst Blake Steven Daniel Sam and Harrison all went over for one. Goals to Dane Sam Harrison Daniel Harry and Ethan. I'm afraid I missed one of the goals so if I left anyone out, I'm sorry :-)
Man of the Match went to Sam... keep up the good work mate.

U/8C V’s Gymea Won 40-14

Our good start to the year continues with a 40-14 win over Gymea @ home. A solid team effort with our boys all contributing to the win. There are always standouts in a team but this week each player had a big influence on the result. The platform for the win was setup early with strong defence and even tougher ball running by the big boys especially man of the match Ryan Lane (Tiny). This week also saw the boys utilise some of the moves we had been training for on Thursday and starting to spread the ball out wide through our backline. Both Tyler & TJ swapped being first receiver during the game which I think confused the opposition as they didn’t know which player was directing the team. Although the score was a good one there was still some defensive lapses that showed the boys still needed to muscle up. The most pleasing thing for me as coach is the team is improving each week in sticking to our game plan and trying to remember their positional play. Each player is making a great effort remembering his own job. Our newer team members are definitely willing and its great to watch them grow in confidence every game. Enjoy the bye boys and keep working hard.

8 Mako Report

Wow what a game our boys certainly stood up and were counted today, we worked on our defensive line all week and it payed off big time. What I was most proud of was when the boys made the call to let them score, it showed maturity well beyond 8 years of age and just shows that it is not only about winning. Playing with your mates is just as important!!!!! I won’t single out any players as there were so many individual PB’S out there but as a team we performed so well, it is hard to gauge progress in this comp with the pooling system so at the moment I am more concerned at how they take training onto the field, and that they did.

I am so proud of you boys well done “the score means nothing enjoyment and progression means everything” well done well done well done.

U/8 Whalers V’s Menai

Another good win by the boys and this time they faced a much bigger bunch of kids.
Unfortunately for Menai size is not something these kids haven't seen before. Most of them faced much bigger during their Tommy Bishop campaign and they have learnt that size doesn't mean good or tough.Engadine won the battle up front in both defence and attack, where Blake is starting to show his real potential as hard hitting runner, and there were some great tackles from all the boys, including a huge hit from Harrison... well done mate. The big bopper Daniel had a fantastic game in attack and went over for one, and he and Ethan went into double figures on the tackle count, whilst the rest all put in a very good effort.
Dane Steven and Jayden worked very hard to make our plays work, and whilst it's still a work in progress, it's great to see all the boy's working so hard at making it happen. For their efforts all three bagged five tries between them. Sam was also rewarded with a couple for his efforts in backing his players up, and the hat-trick went to Harry who just couldn't be caught by the opposition, but I was more impressed with his improved tacking efforts.
All in all a great effort from everyone and I almost forgot to say well done to all who kicked over a Goal as it only adds to our scoring ability.

Man of the match went to  Harry Goldsmith... well done little buddy!

***SATURDAY NIGHT AT SHARK PARK***

This was an exhibition match against a real A side in the form of the Taren Point Titans
I wont go into detail here but the match was a tough contest that was in the end a convincing win to our boys, who only let in one try that was actually dropped over the line, and that was whilst we were one man down with injury, and no reserves. Congratulation to the boy's for showing such tenacity in their first real test against a good hard side.
All our team thanks Jared Kidd who played a great game and helped us out to cover for our absent players. Well done champ, you showed great form out there and I'm sure you will have a great year. Oh and yes it's true... they did have nine on the field for a period of time but even that didn't stop the Engadine Dragons.

12A V’s DeLaSalle WON 4-0

Yes, the 4-0 score line is correct, it was a titanic struggle! It was 0-0 at halftime and we ran down hill at Anzac in the second half, kept them down that end and scored the winning try.

The defence from the boys was absolutely outstanding, especially in the first half when De LaSalle was running down hill.

The win was a milestone as I have been advised that it is the first time we have beaten DeLa in A grade in this age group.

Every boy in the team played well.

Man of the Match and try scorer was James Wayland. The 70-metre break he made in the first half for a front rower was unbelievable.

Other award winners on the day were Joel Collier, Ryan Longville & Jake Wheeler.

We just need to work on clearing the ball from the ruck a bit quicker to give some of our star outside backs more opportunities.

U/17 V’s Cronulla-Caringbah Lost 16-14

Our under 17’s went into this game missing quite a few players and knew that we needed to be on our game, and boy were they! Our forward pack lead the way with Daniel and Bretto tearing in up front and the back row bashing the edges. We went into the half 8-6 up and were pretty happy with that as we were coming down hill. The black cats ended up scoring the winning try with 3 mins to go with the final score being 16-14, considering the amount of unforced errors and possession we coughed up we should be happy with the direction that the team is heading. I am now sure that the other teams are now looking at draw with a few more nerves.
See you all next game

A-Reserves

Engadine Dragons v Gymea LOST 42 – 8

When you look at the score it seems like there could not be too many positives. There are. We have a side mainly made of half the last year’s team and half of the 21’s plus some new guys. Everyone tried their best and at times we played quite well despite the score line.

We went in 14-4 down at half time after only completing about 3 sets. Only a 10 point game. But when we returned for the second stanza a flow of little mistakes and penalties broke the flow of any momentum we were likely to regather.

There some very pleasing returns and debuts for the ressies in this game. Scottie “the freight train” Frater played very strongly and contributed some much needed positive talk on field. Brayden “Buster” Davies showed courage and glimpses of promise for the future. Alex “the Iceman” Collier played tough until he unfortunately injured his shoulder. He should be back in a few weeks hopefully. Ben “Lubbey” Leahy hit the ball up strongly and tackled well.

“T.V.” Todd Vickery is a role model to the younger players. He hits it up into much bigger opponents and decks them with scything tackles. The old Warrior, Dave “Hitman” Hird played well and never shirks the work.

The most pleasing aspect was the way all the guys stuck up for one another when the fisties started. Not that we condone fighting it but it was most encouraging seeing blokes who hardly know each others names letting go of a couple to defend fellow team mates and Dragons. You can see the spirit we have. Special mentions to “Jesse James” Jimmy Mollard, Tommy “Westpac” Hubbard who bravely kept held em off 3 onto 1. Steve “Bulldog” Ring and Vili “the Black Panther” Nabaa both had a strong all round game.

When we develop some structure and do what Super Coach Fleming says we will go a lot better. How about we all shut up when he is talking?

A-Grade Report – V’s Gymea – round 3 – Anzac Oval

Won – 36-12

Today’s game was played in very warm conditions down on Anzac oval that resembled a summer’s day of cricket and I’m guessing Gymea went home from Anzac wishing we did play them in Cricket as our Forward pack smashed them for the full 70 minutes. It was ruthless and wonderful to watch if you were anyone apart from a Gymea supporter. Shane Newton was up to his usual “sharing the love” with the opposition and I don’t know what he say’s but it obviously has an effect as the opposition always seem to be attracted to him.

Early in the game Gymea gave away an early penalty which allowed us to lay the platform for our winger “Jason Beare” to go across and get us away on the scoreboard. Not long after, Nathan Bullock (Riddo) had some great back to back hit ups which eventually put Mick Newton in a wonderful position to barge his way over the white line and under the posts.. It was long after that both Shane Chapman and Matt Stubbs decided they wanted some of the action and put on some of their elusive try scoring runs and with Jason Beare on target today with his kicking the points were racking up very quickly. Just shy of half time Chris Woods put through a wonderfully placed kicked for our new recruit Pat Carr to gather and go all the way seeing us go to the half-time break 26 point up on Gymea.

Tries in the second half went to Andrew Johnston after some great bustling runs by the Coach (Aaron Palmer). Trent Croft isn’t one to miss out on the action and decided he would make his mark on the score line by crossing over with around 20 min’s remaining on the clock.

At the end of the day, this was a great win to get under our belt but its back to training this week in preparation for next Sunday.

Thanks to the Hill for the support you gave the lads and we look forward to seeing you more throughout the season.
