Team Reports

ROUND 11          Juniors

6 Green V St Pats
A fun time was had by all. Although St Pats have some experienced Giants, they are a fair team and gave us some room to run the ball. The difference between today and Round 1 is that in Round 1, St Pats scored every time they ran the ball, whereas today we were able to keep them out for at least 2 to 3 tackles. We just need to get a bit more organised around the Dummy Half / 1st receiver area to allow our Runners some room.
Another great aspect of today’s game was that no matter how many breaks St Pats made, at least 3 to 4 of our tacklers gave chase for the entire length of the field and never gave up. This Teamwork saved us 3 to 4 Tries.
Individual reports are listed:
Nick:  Head down and straight into the opposition is the only way Nick likes to run.
Rory:  Ran wide and no matter how hard he was tackled, didn’t spill the ball once.
Drew:  Took players out over the sideline all day saving heaps of Tries.
Our Award winners were:
Samuel:  Scored a Try from a mousetrap and has perfected this play.
Kurt:  Saved about 50 Tries with some perfectly timed cross field defence.
Jai: Ran forward with a smile and made some great tackles.
Tyson: Had a great game and got really involved in defence.
Jy: Best game of the season. Single handed tackled the biggest players that St Pats ran at us. Topped the tackle count.

8C V DLS  Won 42-6
This week our men played De La Salle 1 and what a turn around from the previous couple of weeks. A great 42-6 win against the side that in the second round beat us 16-12 on the bell. To see a turn around of 84 points from the boys showed us all how well they play as a team when they stick together. Playing a player short this week (no reserve) our guys tackled there bums off. It is the best defensive effort of the year. This followed on from a great training session on Thursday after a long lay off with wet weather and holidays. The game started off well with us getting the ball from the kick off and from there they never looked back. Our big guys of Ryan n both Sams' got us  going forward leaving the speed men of Cam, TJ & tiny Ryan to do what they do best and that’s carve up the opposition. These 3 little guys made huge metre gains every time they touched the ball with both Cam & tiny Ryan bagging 3 tries each. But the most pleasing thing about this week was they way in which all players tackled .It is the first time all year that each player moved up in a line and helped each other out .I would even say that the opposition was a little scared to take the ball up as each time they did our guys either put them on the ground or took them into touch .A special mention to our dummy-half Spencer for always being there and even getting over the line himself from some quick thinking close to the line. Also to Hayden who this week really showed us just how well he is developing. This was Haydens best game of the year. Always in position, running hard and pulling off some great tackles. His hard work rewarded with a goal. In all a great TEAM effort and I wish I could’ve given out 8 man-of-the-match awards. Awesome

10B's   Won 26-0
Weather wise, today was the best day of the year to be at the Zac to watch footy. Although not their best performance of the season, Engadine didn't even look threatened. With some great lead up work from Noakesy, Tripi and Mobbsy, Fatty barged through the middle off a fantastic inside ball and with Mobbsy's 2 points the score was 6-0 with 6 minutes on the clock. Mobbsy was having a blinder in attack and defence, and got a well deserved try in the 12th minute, Maxy added the 2 and the good guys were up 12-0. Two minutes before half time, Fatty was in for his second and the boys went to oranges 16 nil up.
The second half was as dominant as the first with some strong runs from Luke, Brains, Chayce and Maxy. Kayne and Tripi were at their usual best directing the team around the park. This was rewarded with a 4 pointer to Brains and 2 points to Noakesy in the 27th minute giving us a 22-0 lead. Peach had a solid game and almost put on a try for Luke with a neat little grubber out of dummy half into the in goal. Mobbsy powered over for his second in the 33rd minute, and with the score-board 26-0 we knew this one was in the bag. Flemo made plenty of yards today and along with Macca, they were faultless in defence. Full time score was 26-0.
Man of the match was Mobbsy. Other awards for great efforts went to Luke, Peach and Fatty.

13B V St. Pats  won 60-4
Well what a great day for a game of footy, the sun was shining and our boys turned up ready and rearing to go after a week off.
Both teams took to the field ready to play and only 1 minute into the game Joel was in for the first points on the board, St pats had some tough looking boys on the field, but that wasn't scaring our boys. Jordan went in hard with some big runs, followed by keenan running solid also. Nipper had St pats running in circles scoring himself 4 tries on the day, and he still seemed to have energy to defend and attack throughout the rest of the game,[ must have been the 6 weetbix for brekky!
It was great to see Jakob, Issac and Baden all get themselves a try, and as always Ben, Joel and our new steam machine Reece going hard in defence, Jurra had good hands, Brandon putting in some nice kicks, good to see Nathan and Jesse backing up the halves in attack, and Jacko, Jarrod and Jyle putting it on when they needed to,
at the end of the day the score seemed to blow out, but it was good to see our boys turn around and pick up their game and attitude, and see that that they had a lot of fire about them.
We just need to bring that same attitude to every game and you boys will go far!!!!

ROUND 13       Seniors

U/21 V Menai  Lost 20-12
In a game where we really needed to win against Menai who were equal 4th with us, we started positive but slipped to a 10-6 deficit at oranges. Again on going injuries to key players didn’t help. They put two more tries on us early in the second half and that was the ball game.
A late consolation try to Jimmy from a kick and chase by Joel put some respect back into the score line.
Crusty was solid all game taking out the award, Fordo again played his usual tradesman like game, with Killer and Milk also playing strong.
We now have to win the last 2 matches and Menai have to loose their last two matches for us to have any hope of making the Semis, we can only hope.
Tries: Levi and Jimmy
Goals: Freddy and Joel
Points: Crusty, Fordo, Killer.

A Reserve V Renown     LOST 34 – 12
This was a very disappointing loss after a great pre-match preparation did not produce the on field results it promised. Thankfully Caringbah beat St Christophers to ensure our place in the semis is safe. But we have reached the fork in the road. After a season of fielding a different line up due to loss of players by injury and otherwise we have the guts of a team that can win. It has been a stop start season with wet games and byes but we now have a handful of games and the nucleus of the same team to build on for a successful finish. Each player has to examine his own performance and provide what was lacking out there today and do it for your team mates.
I can't say too much about individual performances because its time for some soul searching.
Ben Cotton stood out for his strong game (must have been thinking about his 30th Birthday coming up) and a gutsy effort by Everton Parahini supported by his ever reliable brother Dominic.

A-Grade V Cronulla Caringbah WON 26-0

Both teams turned up today with a point to prove. Cron Car was on a 7 game winning run and was hell bent on making it 8. And for our side we wanted to shut them down on their home turf and prove to ourselves that we are ready to lift a number of gears coming into finals time and boy did this side lift. From the kick off Nathan Harris and Scott Nancarrow (voted players, player) lead the way up front with some of the best hard hitting runs I’ve seen this season. This enthusiasm I believe inspired our guys to jump on-board and it wasn’t long before we had Cron-C/Bah on their back foot. The game was played in wet conditions and up until yesterday we haven’t had a great deal of success in the rain but this area of our game was certainly put behind us seeing us go to the halftime break 14 points to nil in front. And better still a very silent Cro-C/Bah spectator crowd!!
It was a pleasure sitting next to our bench today listening to the enthusiasm from the guys wanting to get out on the paddock and if not out there just cheering on every move our guys made. The way our guys kept backing each other up and constantly shutting down every movement Cron-C/Bah made. It was brilliant and something I haven’t seen in a long time.
As always, Mitch Neylan had a wonderful game all-round. His kicking games was on target seeing him convert 5 from 5 and 3 of them from out wide put together with a try seen him rack up a total of 14 points of the 26.
Our two wingers in Nathan Rose and Jared Goode both had great games as did Tye Fleming, Chris Wood and Mark Stewart. But really this was a game where the whole team should get a mention as they played as a team, put what they had been learning at training into practice, had fun out there, played smart, put our speed and fitness into practice and the end result was the 2 points which now has us back on top of the competition ladder with 2 games to go until the finals.
A special thanks must go to the guys from “The Hill” and all the spectators that travelled to the game yesterday in very wet and cold conditions to support the team on. It was a very supportive and vocal crowd which is appreciated by all in the team.

Round 14 Seniors

A Grade and 21’s won on forfeit

A grade V Hurstville Won on Forfeit
Unfortunately not a lot to report this week as Hurstville decided to forfeit playing us 15 minutes prior to the game commencing. Special thanks though must go to all the players that turned up and carried out our duties on Sunday and in particular Grahame Wagener (A-Grade strapper and Committee member) who spent all day Saturday and Sunday at the Club ensuring things ran smoothly.
I have been approached by various people in regards to the purchase our A-Grade squad team shirt. This is possible but in an effort to keep the cost down it would be best if this was placed in the one order. As such if anyone is interested in the purchase of a shirt, could you please email me back the details and once I know the quantities I can provide you with a price.
This coming Sunday will see us playing round 15 and the last game before the finals start. Currently we are sitting in first place and all going well this position won’t change after the weekend when we take on Kurnell at Anzac Oval. I have provided below the current ladder showing where all teams are placed in the competition. The same has also been provided further down for the A-Reserves side and it's GREAT to see that both sides are up there in the hunt for the ultimate prize. Go The Dragons!!

A-Reserve Grade V Como Jannali LOST 25 – 12

We fielded a team that was very short on specialist backs. Going in 12-4 up at halftime with our regular second rowers playing as outside backs it seemed to be working. Como had a much younger side composed mainly of under 21's. Then you combine that with squandered possession from too many dropped balls and penalties which gave them a glut of possession and a mountain of defensive work to do. They kicked well too, into the corners and ran us off our feet. It was a loss that should not have been. All we have to do is play our second half last week and our first half this week back to back in the same match and we beat anyone.
The stand out player was Judd O'Shea. Several sideline commentators remarked Judd had harkened back to his younger days with the Sharks as he rammed through Como's defensive line in the first half. Unfortunately we did not sustain enough second half possession to enjoy more of Judd's great ball running. Eric "Hitman" Henare had a good hard game in the forwards and Dom "Perpetual Motion" Parahini had another good game.
In the backs Jack O'Reilly had played well and created some good chances with his ball distribution. I thought Salad Sandwich (a.k.a Kieran Smith) had a good game at centre especially in the first half and could make a centre with some work on positional play.
I was pleased to see the return of "Big Red" (Cameron Stacey).  I believe Stace will get fitter and come good for the semis. "Bouncing" Benny Cotton, Dennis Marsh "the Tank" and Tommy "Westpac" Hubbard came up with honest efforts and "Cheeks" (Adam Jones) tried hard all day.
Let's face it. We still have not got our kick-chase right. There are too many jersey grabbers and handling mistakes. Cheeks remarked that mistakes come from tiredness. I have to agree. What causes this tiredness? Players, you know the answer.
Having said that we have not yet fielded our best available side. With our best team on the paddock we have the potential to beat any of the available opposition. But we have to believe in our ability to win, to play Grand Final football now and get into the Grand Final.
It seems very appropriate to repeat these messages from last week:

Our team photo will be taken at the first semi final. Can we have a chop so we have something to smile about?

Blast from the Past

Lua Fakaua

After completing his playing career withe the Sharks and NSW Country teams Lua came to the Dragons in 1992 as Coach of the Under 13B's.

He must have passed on his playing skills to the boys as the current A Grade Captain/Coach Aaron Palmer, hooker Trent Croft and A Reserves hooker Ben Cotton were in that team.
Lua was very popular with players from the Club and is now a well known identity in Engadine.

While coaching the 13B's he volunteered to play A Grade and went on and played for four seasons playing 59 games for the Club scoring six tries and kicking one goal. While playing A Grade the team won grand finals in 1992, 1993 and 1994 all against Gymea.

Lua was a ferocious tackler and never gave an inch.  He was feared by many of his opponents for his aggresive style.

Lua was Assistant Coach of the A Grade in 1996 and helped out with the teams over a number of years.
He often comes down to watch the "boys" go round at Anzac.
