Team Reports
The Report will start with some old reports that missed out on being published in previous Newsletters.
6B Dragons v Kurnell Stingrays Round 9 Dragons won 34 – 8 A big win for the boys and the best team effort all year with everybody getting in and helping and supporting each other. Kooper Bannister was excellent all round and played his best game so far, making strong runs every time he got the ball and making plenty of tackles. Samuel Thompson played his best defensive game yet, pulling off two try saving tackles, while Cooper Duffy was outstanding as always in his defence. Cooper also scored two well deserved tries. Billy Price was another that played his best game yet, running hard with the ball and won the Man Of The Match award. Zac Morell and Coen Jordan both also played to their best, particularly in attack. Zac took on the defence strongly and ran with plenty of determination, as did Coen who was also very good when playing dummy half. Brynn Magson was brilliant as we’ve come to expect week in and week out. He charged at the opposition in defence, scored three tries, and to make his day complete, kicked a goal. And to cap off an all round great day, Bailey King also kicked a goal! Bailey again improved in this game. Every week he plays better than the last and he’s becoming a great attacking runner. The best part of the game was that the opposition had some bigger players and some quick players but our guys played hard and smart and were too good in what was a great game to watch.
11B's V De La Salle WON 20 -0 Round 11 Another good victory by the boys and we now sit in clear second place with two rounds to go. Man of the Match was Jarrod Pettit for the second week in a row, well done mate. The boys are really playing as a team and enjoying their footie, they can now put on set plays without any prompting from me. It looks like we are on track for our third Grand Final in the last four seasons, which will be one mighty achievement. Special Mention must also go to Braiden Broadstock who I have nicknamed "the machine". Braiden has really hit his straps in attack this year and is leading try scorer with 18 tries so far.
Round 10 10B’s V MENAI ROOSTERS 36 to 10 It was a balmy 15 degrees at Akuna Road when the mighty undefeated 10B’s arrived to take on the lower placed Menai Roosters. From kick off to full time it was obvious that it was 1st against 7th with Engadine dishing up a faultless first half. The boys dominated in both attack and defense and this showed on the score board with the good guys going to oranges up by 20 and Menai not even looking like scoring. The beginning of the second half looked like it was going to be a repeat of the first, with 2 more quick tries. Menai must have woken up mid way through the second as they barged over for the first of their 2 tries. Over all it was great team effort, too many names to mention. Exceptional game to the man of the match, Braedon who was unstoppable all game, arguably the best game of his short career. Other awards went to Tripi and Cannonball Junior, just edging out Flemo, Luke and Chayce for the points. Final score win 36 – 10 Try scorers: Brains 2, Tripi 2, Flemo, Noakesy and Fatty. Goals: Greeny, Maxy, Brains and Noakesy.
Round 12 10B’s V’s TAREN POINT 18 – 24. This was a game of 2 halves. The first half was all ours with total dominance shown across the field. We opened the scoring with a great try to Noakesy in the 8th minute, 7 minutes later and a fantastic offload from Fatty put Luke across the white stripe. 3 minutes before half time Peach snuck out of dummy half and crossed for his first of the season and with an 18-0 lead we thought we had this one in the bag. At our last meeting with this club, we came away with a 44-4 win and it was looking like history was about to repeat itself. With the bell raised for half time Taren Point’s number 3 ran through us like we were standing still for an almost length of the field try. We went to the break 18-6 up. The second half wasn't ours, with another try to Taren Point off the first set. I'm still unsure how Engadine held onto their 18-12 lead for the majority of the second half with a plethora of unforced errors. In the 33rd minute we were defending our line when Brains pulled off a bone rattling ball and all tackle, it was also the last. The ref didn't see it that way when he awarded Taren Point a penalty for a high shot. The next set of 6 saw Taren Point draw even with what could only be described as a controversial try at best (you can see I'm not bitter but you do have to play to the whistle). As the story went in the first half, the bell was raised, Taren Point went wide and and it was all over. Man of the match and well deserved was Tripi. Other awards went to Kayne and Noakesy. Final score loss 18-24 Try scorers: Noakesy, Luke and Peach Goals: Kayne, Kyle and Greeny.
6 Blue – Gala Day In the style of a Norse saga … Bright was the day and hot was the Sun when the Engadine 6 Blue’s set forth to Taren Point to do battle. Gathered together were the Dragons true; Samuel the Strong, Billy the Kid, Cohen the Barbarian, Zac the Wise, Kooper the Courageous, Bailey the Brave and Lachlan the Magnificent; veterans of many a struggle. Joining them from an allied band were Ryan the Righteous and Tyler the Terrible to strengthen both their ranks and their hearts. They dispensed with their rivals from the peninsula of Kurnell with a solid 20-0 victory and followed this up with victory over the local tribe of Taren Point where again their defence was impregnable. The Dragons were then sorely tried by a swarm of Crocodiles, succumbing at last 6 points to 8. Having supped of the bitter dregs of defeat, the Dragons rallied and vanquished their next opponents; the followers of Saint Joseph and De La Salle. The stage was set for the final struggle between the Dragons of Engadine and the Gorillas of Gymea. The Dragons came to the struggle with 4 wins and a loss against the Gorilla’s 4 wins and a draw. Victory in the coming encounter would determine who would go on to further glory and who would have less glory but could at least go home early. The battle was gigantic (think King Kong verses Godzilla); with the Dragons holding a slender 10-8 lead in the dying seconds. Alas, it was not to be; with a Gymea offload and a bustling run to the corner that the Dragons could not withstand. Magnanimous in defeat the Dragons cheered their opponents and departed for a well earned rest and repast of sausage-in-a-bun. Here endeth the tale.
Round 13 10B’s V’s Como WON 18 – 16. Engadine and Como were on equal points, being 1 and 2 on the ladder, came together to decide the minor premiership. Things didn’t start out well with Como finding touch from the kick off and putting on a converted try off the first set. Our defense was sloppy, we dropped the ball on numerous occasions which of course didn’t allow us to string a set of six together. With a glut of possession it took only another 6 minutes for Como to score the easiest of tries from a mouse trap. Thankfully the conversion was waved away and we went to oranges 10 nil down. During the break some inspirational words were shared from Coach Mark and Trainer Anthony. This obviously worked; you could sense something special about to happen. 3 minutes in, Tripi put a fantastic ball on for Brains, who was at pace and hit the defensive line like a tonne of bricks and went straight through. He coasted the next 40 metres untouched and with the conversion successful from Mobbsy we looked a chance being behind 6-10. Como had other thoughts though, striking straight back with an easy try through some sloppy line defense. Behind on the score board 6-16, the boys tried one of their set plays which paid off and Noakesy was rewarded with a 4 pointer, Kayne converted and we were with-in 4, with 10 still on the clock. The next 10 minutes were very anxious with both teams playing their hearts out, one of the best games of footy I’ve seen. 3 minutes from the hooter, Tripi snuck out of dummy half diving low to level things up with a kick to come. Greeny placed the ball on the tee, lined it up, stepped back, took his time as this was the most important kick of the season so far, it didn’t look like missing. Well done boys, you are the 2009 under 10B’s minor premiers. Good luck in the final series there still a lot of hard work ahead. Final score win 18-16 Try scores: Brains, Noakesy and Tripi. Goals: Mobbsy, Kayne and Greeny.
Round 15 A Grade V’s Kurnell WON 46-12 Just before we get into the weekend reports, there are a few things that need to be mentioned:
Special Thanks to Grahame Wagener and Brett Rogers who cooked up a sensational serve of fish cocktails and chips following last Thursday’s training session. Thursday nights are becoming a “not to be missed” night on the weekly calendar due to the above efforts. Thanks must also go to Aaron Palmer and Chris Wood for supplying the Shark that they had caught on a recent fishing trip (a 6 foot Mako Shark).
Senior Presentation Night
This years Senior Presentation night has been booked for Saturday the 31st of October at the Engadine Family Tavern in the St Moritz Room. Tickets are $55 for players, coach and manager with all guests being charged $60. Price includes meal and drinks (not sure to what degree at this stage). Please note that this year the Club has made a strict policy where all money must be collected and paid for before the night otherwise you will be hit up for an additional $5 surcharge on the night for any late comers. So get in early and confirm your spot as these are always a good night and well worth attending.
Many thanks to Grahame Wagener who has helped me out this week by preparing the following report….Thanks Mate! This game would decide the Minor Premiers and it was thought to be ‘easy’ enough as it was first against the bottom dwellers. But this was not the case as Kurnell turned up with their heads on and stingers at the ready. From the outset the oohs and aahs from The Hill gave testimony to some big hits and no nonsense play. The boys from the peninsula were not going out with a whimper but had decided to let the Dragons know they had a game on their hands. Our Hill were vociferous in their support but the Kurnell mob, allowed up the mountain for the day, howled and brayed for victory and gave voice to every penalty. As much as there was a tough encounter on the hallowed but untidy turf of Anzac, there was a vocal tournament rivalling the ‘Barmy Army’. Fun was being had by the ‘speckled potatoes’ and the players. The Fatman, bulked up by some huge snacks on Thursday night, played like a 68 kilo mako on a feeding frenzy, managing to barrel and bump his way through assorted Stingrays to take out Lenny Cousemakers play of the day. To hear Lenny tell it The Fat was like a runaway truck tyre leaving squashed rays in his wake. Harry and Scotty were on search and destroy missions with Woodsy assaulting like a green beret. Mighty stuff and Kurnell gave as good as they got but the score board ticked over on a regular basis as the Dragons went on a remorseless search for the MP. Tye scored first but was quickly followed up by Smithy, Chappo and Rosie (who forgot where the wing was as he raided into the ruck many times). All up tries to Tye, Paul (2), Shane (3), Nathan (2) and Captain Johnno. Mitch continued his champion form with 5 from the sideline. We had 46 points at the hooter and Kurnell, worrying our for and against, had 12. The Fatman took congratulations on being MP’s humbly – a simple smile showed he was as happy as a pig in mud. At the presentation Fat chose to award Nathan Harris, Mark Stewart, Chris Wood, Shane Chapman and Nathan Rose. But we all know the Minor Premiership is won by Coaches, Players, Managers, Trainers, and ‘dogs bodies’, so congrats to all associated with the team and let’s go that one more step. As the night progressed The Fat confided in one of my reporters that: We will beat them in the forwards We will beat them in the backs We will never surrender So much owed to so many by so few. That’s the way Fat – you tell ‘em. The team encourages all our friends and supporters to come to Sutho on Sunday and give the Dragons fire in the belly. Watch out football world, here we come. Under 11A's

Last round at the club house. Team presentations were made and coaches gave a report on their team and the teams progress. It was a great afternoon with around 400 parents, players and supporters present. Everyone had a great time and it was so good to see so many. we had a bit of a problem with catering but that can be fixed for next year with a more accurate estimate of how many folks we can expect. Regardless of little klitches a great time was had by all.
Best wishes to all teams competing in the finals series.
