Team Reports
A Reserve V Hurstville United 4 July WON 44 -12 This was a game where we welcomed the return of some old favourites and some new blood. Lee "Roy" Fowler, fullback, returned and had immediate impact with some great ball running and kick returns. Kyle Whey in the centres had a whale of a game scoring 3 tries and then backed up and did it all again scoring a try in A Grade. Kyle carved up the opposition with pace off the mark and incisive running. One notable try was off a great backline movement in broken play and a deft inside ball from "Cheeks" Adam Jones at halfback. "Cheeks" threw some beauties. In all we scored 8 tries (and 1 of Hurstville's 2 was a knock on) coming from "T.V. Todd" Vickery, centre, a try, on the wing Kurt "Slippery" Marsh a try and also a good try to "Bouncing Benny " Cotton. Kane Ryan, the "Skip", had a confidence inspiring return to form scoring 2 really fast tries (I reckon he is the fastest player in this grade) and 5 goals. In the forwards Dominic "Perpetual Motion" Parahini again topped the stats sheet, Danny Brubaker was, yes you guessed it, "Mr Consistency" Dennis "the Tank" Marsh and Kurt, is it Ridley or "Gidley"? had solid games setting the platform for our backs to run over them in the second half. "Monkey", Brett Fleming made a very successful comeback and was trades-man-like at dummy half and organising the ruck. Kieran "Salad Sandwich" Smith and Mitchell "the Axe Hatch" were again reliable also. Injury to some players meant Nathan "Bones" Jones valiantly played despite being under the weather and kicked a GOAL. Welcome aboard to Eric Henare, a mate of the Parahini brothers, who played his first game for us. He really showed the way copybook tackling around the legs and hitting the ball up strongly when the tough stuff was on! Round 10 : 6 Green V Aquinas 38/8 This team beat us about 48 / 0 in Round 1 (our 1st ever game) so it was pleasing to see the difference half a season can make. We looked like a team today and even the Aquinas coach said that we were the most improved team he has seen this season. Although we had 2 players off today, we knuckled down and made tackle after tackle. Without such strong tackling, Aquinas could have easily scored 60 points with their large, experienced team. This team is really starting to “gel” together and to see the improvement is great.
Individual reports are listed: Samuel: Made some great runs and gained us valuable ground. Kurt: Scored 2 Tries and stopped 6. Jai: Was involved in everything and never took a backwards step. Tyson: Protected his side of the field and drove the opposition over the sideline. Our Award winners were: Nick: Held his position great and made some very strong runs. Jy: Made some great tackles and ran strong. Rory: Made us a lot of ground with some fast runs into the gap. Drew: Tackled all day and saved many Tries.
8C V Menai. Lost 42-6 A really tough game this week against the competition leaders Menai had our boys suffer a big defeat 42-6.things got a bad start with two of our boys out which meant we had to call on 3 of our U7 boys to help us out. We started the game well holding Menai out to a 12-6 first third lead. However it soon became clear why Menai haven’t lost a game this year running our boys all over the field. Not taking anything away from our team they tried hard all game each one trying their hardest till the very end. One thing that is holding our little men back though is our defence. It is the one thing that lets us down each week and not being able to train certainly affects that. A big thank you to Blake ,Lachlan & Max for helping us out from our U7s. Our little men of Cam, Ryan & TJ stood out for us but overall the score didn’t reflect the effort this team put in.
11A's - Engadine 18 - St Pats 12 Firstly, congratulations to Ryan Levin for playing his 100th game for the Engadine Dragons Club. Sadly we didn't play at home for this occasion but that didn't stop Ryan leading by example and playing one of his best games. Yet again we were put under pressure from the get go and only field 10 boys. Even though we were short 1 player, I'm still scratching my head over our first half performance, even more so when I reflect back on the week before when we played our best footy for the season and gave Gymea a run for their money...... In a nut shell, we simply didn't defend as an A-side should. Only a select few moved up and put pressure on St Pats. When we did move up as a team, numerous players were found out as they were going high, shirt grabbing and as a result St. Pats lead 0-6. We then completed several sets while making plenty of yards (Riley Mills, Brad Watts) unlucky not to go over out wide. After some great thinking and shear speed, Ryan Levin split 2 defenders and went 50m to put us back in the game (6-6). St Pats then bounced back and scored another try heading into half-time 6-12. After drinks, we went out with 11 boys, started to play some real footy the way know best, hard, strong and physical. After a great pass from Ben Barford to Ryan Longville on the short blind, Ryan made a good 15-20m, we then made a great break on the right hand side, our backs then spun the ball out all the way to the left and Juye Ebb with a defender on his back went 10m to score a 1 hander try in the corner (12-12). The next 15 minutes of the game was a real arm wrestle. Even when St Pats were pressing our line, we stayed tight with good line speed pressure and solid hits...hit of the day went to Joel Collier with an absolute screamer which helped lift the team. After that, with only a 2 minutes to go, Joshua Ridge made a 50m bust, even with a St Pats guy holding on for ride with 10m to go, went on to score giving us the game 18-12. Great solid defensive efforts yet again by Zac Sims, Zachary Hunter, Matheson Johns must also be mentioned.
100 Games - Ryan Levin Tries - Ryan Levin, Juye Ebb, Joshua Ridge Goals - Ryan Levin, Riley Mills, Juye Ebb Thanks to Ben Barford for helping out.
ROUND 12 U/21 V GYMEA LOST 4-14 In another game where injury has crippled us, we sent out what I believed a side capable of winning the match with the inclusion of 3 NYC players. Unfortunately with no ball work due to injuries on Tuesday and the grounds being closed Thursday we were like lost sheep due to Knowsley re-injuring his knee early in the game. We battled on, down ten to nil at oranges’, before scoring a consolation try to Jimmy late in the game. Three losses now on the trot see us in equal fourth place with three games remaining. We have a week off to hopefully get some more players back on deck for our next game against Menai at Menai to decide fourth spot. This is a very frustrating time at present, something in which we can get better. Congratulations to Richo on achieving 150 games for the Dragons today. Try: Jimmy
Our A-Grade Luncheon was a HUGE success and from all the players and management we would like to send out a BIG THANKS to all those that turned up and supported the afternoon. Special thanks must go to Jeff Coombes and his staff at Club Heathcote for their efforts, on and leading up to the afternoon. I would also like to thank both Aaron Palmer (A-Grade Coach) and Grahame Wagener (A-Grade strapper) for the effort they both put into ensuring the afternoon was a successful one.
Just before we get into the weekend reports, I have been asked to remind everyone about the following: No games this coming weekend: Both our A-Reserves and A-Grade will not be playing this coming weekend as the Junior League are using the weekend as a catch up round which doesn’t involve our guys. Engadine Dragons Golf Day: The club now has a date set and are really banking on making this a big day for all to enjoy. Details are attached but if you have trouble opening this file, email me back and I can send through in another format. Teams are played in groups of 4 but if you would like to play but don’t have a team, no need to worry as we can arrange to have you placed into a team. These are a great day if you can get the time off work with all money raised going back to supporting the Club and the kids within it.
A-Grade Match report V Penshurst RSL WON 14-6
Both teams turned up to play and both were not disappointed. It was a tough, spirited encounter. The conditions suited the solid slog in the forwards with limited opportunities for the speedy outsiders. Both teams provided the spectators with an exciting game. Penshurst scored first and maintained a 6 point lead until oranges. Some pundits thought our boys might struggle a little in the second half given the ground conditions, toughness of the encounters and the direction we would be running in the second half, but dressing room conversation amongst the players and officials saw only opportunities for the Dragons to take the game and give it a good shake. Not long into the second half and Crofty comes a cropper, not to participate for the rest of the game. Continuous raids weakened the Penshurst resilience and we were rewarded time, time and time again. Three bullseyes and one conversion and the Dragons fired up. No rest for the valiant and Penshurst knew they had played a game. It was a lot of fun for the spectators in the old fashion hit em up and knock em down style. Tries were scored by Shane Chapman (fleet of foot and quick of eye), Nathan Rose (determined arjy barjy) twice, and Nails did not worry the touchies from a sideline conversion. The players themselves thought good games were played by: Nails, Harry, Crofty, Tray, Woodsy, Pony and Newts. The Fatman was happy with Harry, Tray, and Pony. So a week off and then into the fray once again bravehearts. Onwards and upwards. A-Reserve V Arncliffe Scots WON 20 – 4 We beat 3rd placed Arncliffe again and maintained our momentum in the run up to the semis. You could feel the intensity in the sheds before the game and it was carried on to the field through a lot of positive player talk and encouragement. Everyone played well. We scored 3 tries and. Golden Boots" Kane Ryan kicked 4 goals. There were a couple of iffy calls that did not go our way but we kept up our intensity until Everton Parahini scored. Golden Boots converted. The undisciplined attack saw a dropped ball and a piggy back penalty and they were in our quarter. After some untidy marker defence they scored but did not convert. We seemed to have the upper hand though. Our players were running the ball and crashing head long into their defensive line. But the score line was only 6 - 4. We got a penalty and opted for points on the board. "Golden Boots" put it over. Somehow psychologically it had the desired effect. We went in 8 - 4 ahead at halftime and a semi final spot in clear view. All the halftime talk was positive. It was inspiring. Everton Parahini said "let's go out there and do it like that again boys" and we did. "Jack" O'Reilly, "Westpac" Hubbard and "Leroy" Fowler were carving up their backline with strong ball running and some clever touches. Leroy scored and Skip converted again. 14 - 4. Our defensive line was coming up strong. "T.V." Todd Vickery gave everyone a lesson in how to tackle. He dropped them time after time with a beautiful old school round the leg tackling technique. Our ascendancy was showing on the score line when "Skip" with a clever little kick and good hands put "Leroy" over. "Leroy" had earlier pulled off 2 absolute desperation try saving tackles was then rewarded with his second try. Golden Boots" converted. We got em20 - 4. A great game by Players Player "Bouncing" Benny Cotton. Another consistent all round performance by "Mr Consistency" Dan Brubaker. Dennis "the Tank" Marsh, Dom "Perpetual Motion" Parahini and "the Champ" Michael Warren blitzkreiged their larger pack. "Head" Glen Dryland, Mitchell "the Axe" Hatch and "Gidley" Kurt Ridley were robust and reliable. "Slippery" Marsh was safe on the wing. Like "Hitman" Hird said on the sideline, Kieran "Salad Sandwich" Smith put some meat in it! Let’s go on with it eh?
