IDOL NIGHT HUGE SUCCESS
The IDOL Night was a huge success both in the numbers attending and in the funds raised for the club – close enough to $6000. The club thanks Mark Dodge and his helpers for putting on a great club event. An event like this would not have been possible without the support of the sponsors – Sunshine Real Estate; Adam Bray Accounting; Tyres Plus Sutherland and Engadine Plumbing. Sunshine Real Estate will give the club $500 for every house listed – so if you or your friends are thinking of selling make sure you see the good people at Sunshine. Sean Crawley from Tyres Plus plans to give the club a package of 4 tyres for future fund raising. Don’t forget to support all of our sponsors.
U/21 ROUND 10 BOSCO @ ANZAC 28/06/09 RESULT: LOST 10-18
In the local derby clash between the Chihuahuas and the Dragon’s on a mud affected ANZAC Oval saw the Chihuahua’s take home the bacon.
They were more enthused and some luck went their way and they came up with the win.
I am sure a dry track and the availability of some key players’ next game will help us.
Without making too many excuses loosing Levi from a cheap shot early in the second half did not help our cause.
The boys stuck it out to the end with Crusty, Cams and Freddy our best. A mention to Loges who came off the bench and put in a solid performance, playing nearly all the game then backing up for Soccer later in the day.
Not the end of the world as we have bigger and better games ahead towards the back end of the season.
Tries: Carney 1, Sook Juice 1 Goals: Freddy 1
A-Grade Report – V Taren Point – Round 9 – Anzac Oval – 28/6/09 – Won 52-0
Congratulations to Andrew Johnston on reaching the wonderful milestone of 250 games for the Engadine Dragons when he ran out today as Captain of the A-Grade team. I would like to thank Andrew Kniggee, Ben Cotton, Corey Markem and Adam Jones (Club Captain and A-Res Coach) for their help Sunday morning with the setting up of the sponsor’s tent as it was greatly appreciated.
A huge thanks today to all our sponsors that came down and hopefully enjoyed the afternoon. The day started off sensational with next to no breeze and plenty of sunshine. The playing condition of the oval were a little less kind seeing it best fit for a mud wrestling competition as opposed to a game of footy.
Our U17’s and U21’s started the day off and in doing so provided some great footy. Our A-reserves were next up and just when everyone was settling in with a cool drink and something to eat, the opposing team in Sutherland pulled the plug. In an effort to provide some entertainment for the sponsors the lads decided to still go out and put on a game of touch footy. Well done to Adam Jones and his team for showing this spirit and the crowd did enjoy the show.
Our next game was the A-Grade and it wasn’t long before the whispers were making there way around the ground that Taren Point were looking like also pulling the pin due to a lack of players. Credit must be given to Taren Point though as once it was explained to them that we had our sponsor’s day on, they got together and decided to take the field with 2 players short and no bench.
Taren Point started the game off as if they knew nothing about the lack of numbers on the field and at times had Engadine on the back foot defending our line. It wasn’t long though before we settled into the game and turned the momentum around and needless to say that we ran away with the game. I missed most of the game and as such it makes it hard to write a full report this week so I do apologise. Going by the comments on the Hill, Scott Nancarrow, Nathan Rose and Tye Fleming all played well putting in a solid effort. Looking at the score sheet though it was all our speedsters that got the tries today and after last weekend injury list I’m glad to report that we came away from this game injury free. This week our boys played Taren Point and we had our first loss in 4 weeks, going down 32-26.this was not one of our better games but I think it can all be put down to the wet weather & not being able to train. We tried hard all game but lacked our cohesion in both attack & defence. Taren Point had some big boys & I think our guys held their own as we are not the biggest side going around. Two stand out performances this week from Cam and especially Sam Gurton were the highlights for an otherwise ugly team effort. Knowing how well this little team has gone recently its hard to swallow but they keep putting in the effort. We need to keep up our strong running like Big Ryan and tackling like Spencer and Will we will be on track. We are still proud of you boys keep working hard.
8C’s Round 9 V Kurnell
A really tough game this week against a quality side, Kurnell. Unfortunately we had a 26-0 loss. It’s the first time this year that we have failed to score a point. From the opening whistle Kurnell really stuck it to the boys with some hard running and even tougher defence. We looked a little lost out there with our positional play and our lack of straight line in defence. There was only a couple of bright spots from the boys but overall we had an off day. I think it all started on Thursday nite with a poor training session that ultimately led to our bad game here. I know it seems hard but this little team is capable of much better and I think they realise that now after a big loss. Better luck next week boys.
11A V Gymea lost 12-22
It was a great effort. We were actually winning 12-6 at half time. Having no reserves cost us the game. Extremely hard to compete when they put 4 fresh forwards out for the second half.
A-Grade – V’ Menai – Round 11 – Akuna Oval – 5/7/09 – won 66-6 Congratulations to Nathan Rose on reaching the wonderful milestone of 150 games for the Engadine Dragons when he ran out today. Well done mate and we hope you’re around for another 150 games. With almost a point being scored every minute you would have thought we were playing the bottom of the ladder team but in actual fact Menai are sitting around the middle of the ladder and at stages showed that they can be competitive and capable of being in the A-Grade competition. But as in last weeks game our guys were just to fast around the park in attack and ruthless in defence. With the racking up of 66 points comes many standouts and plays throughout the game. The following players though did stand out and got the votes from their team mates. Both Scott Nancarrow and Nathan Harris had an exceptional game up front. At stages, Nathan resembled a run away freight train when hitting the ball up. Mitch Neylan had a great afternoon with his boot seeing him put together 18 of our 66 points, and after a very rare drop of the ball from Nathan Rose at the kick-off of the game, he quickly recovered and showed us all why he is playing A-Grade and such a valuable player for us on the left wing. But credit today must go to Kyle Weh who after some 9 weeks away from playing footy after he was struck quite heavily by a car leaving him with multiple injuries, stepped back onto the paddock and had a sensational game scoring one try and setting up numerous other tries and this was on the backend of playing A-Reserves before he played A-Grade. Well done mate and it’s great to see you back! Special thanks must also be said to the Engadine Spectators that made the trip to Akuna Oval in support of our lads as your efforts are greatly appreciated by all in the team. Round 8 : 6 Green V Gymea
36/4 Loss Another week against a team of Gymea Gorillas that were just too big and too fast for us to really shine. As soon as we ran the ball we had 3 or 4 great tacklers on us and it made it hard for us to gain much field position. We also had a lot of dropped ball which gave Gymea a lot of possession. Individual reports are listed: Jy Garvey : Ran wide again this week and almost went around them. Jai Williams : Copped a 4 man tackle but didn’t spill the ball and got up smiling. Tyson : Held his position well and made some great tackles. Fynn : Had some great runs and tackled well. Kurt : Made us valuable ground and tackled, tackled, tackled. Samuel : Was involved in every tackle down his wing and ran the ball with a smile. Our Award winners were: Nick : Ran the ball hard and straight and took on the opposition straight on. Owen: Broke the line twice in one run and was unlucky they caught him. Rory: Made the tackle of the century on a giant twice his size. Tackle of the year. Drew : Scored his 1ST EVER TRY against a very solid team. GREAT work Drew. GO DRAGONS !!
Round 9 4/7/09 Engadine Dragons 10B’s Win 18-12 against St Pats Our boys had a hard game on their hands and this was apparent within the first 5 minutes, with plenty of pressure applied by St Pats. Some great attacking moves from the Dragons including a break by Flemo and plenty courageous defence only to let St Pats in for the first try 7 minutes into the game. It only took another 3 minutes to even things up though, with a great try by Greenie in the 10th min and converted by Mobbsy. Strong running by Luke and Brains was the foundation for a back line move that saw Tripi into a gap, another pass to Noakesy who put on our second, converted by Kayne and we went to oranges with a 12-6 lead. 3 minutes into the second half and St Pats evened the score 12-12. Maxy's kick to restart the game saw us get the pill back with a quick thinking Noakesy diving on a loose ball. We had a game of tug and war for the next 10 or so minutes until Tripi made a break and passed to Greenie who scored in the corner with 7 minutes left on the clock. Greenie converted to make it 18-12 to the good guys, it was a lucky goal, as it hit the black dot and fortunately fell the on right side line. With play resumed and only minutes left Noakesy placed the kick of the day into the corner for a flying Greenie to score. Unfortunately the ref didn’t see it the way we did and called Greenie offside, unlucky call Greenie. There was only 90 seconds left on the clock and the St Pats No 15 (very large 10 year old) was away down the side line He had beaten everyone twice and only had to get past one, wrong, he was brought down by a much smaller man in Greeny which can only be described as the match saver Good hard running and solid defence by Fatty, Kayne, Peach, Kyle, Chayce, Macca, Flemo, Brains and Luke. Man of the match and very deserving of the award was Greeny, arguably the best game of the season, well played Greenie. Other awards for strong games went to Brains and Mobbsy for great games in both attack and defence, they didn’t stop all game. All the boys had a great game and in the end we got the 2 points with another win, 18-12 and still undefeated, we are very proud of you all and keep up the good work on the field.
Round 9 : 6 Green V Cronulla
20/14 WIN Our best game yet. Our first ever win. From the kick-off you could see this was going to be one of our better games. All the boys were here to play football and play football they did. The 2 main differences today is that we ALL tackled and got in there and helped our team mates, no one stood back and watched. We were a TEAM. The other difference was that none of us ran out the sideline, not once did any of the boys cross the poison line. If they heard the words “cut in”, cut in they did, and within in a second they had changed direction and were now heading infield. Great Work. We were in front on the scoreboard from start to finish, and although winning/losing doesn’t matter at this age (most of the boys think we win every week), we (the parents) didn’t expect a win this year, so we were very proud of the boys. Individual reports are listed: Jai: Copped a few hard knocks but kept coming back. Fynn: Got in there and tackled boys twice his size. Rory: Had a lot of ball today and made the most of it with some great runs. Drew: Took Cronulla out the side line and saved many tries, a great game. Nick: Ran with a little side step and confused the opposition. Jy: Sick today, will be fighting fit for next week. Our Award winners were: Owen: Ran the ball straight and hard and made some solid tackles. Tyson: Got in there on most tackles and helped protect the wing. Samuel: Scored another Try with a “mousetrap” and tackled solidly. Kurt: Scored 4 Tries, and “shoulder palmed” Cronulla over the side line.
VALE Leonard Charles Roelandts “BUTCH”. A good supporter of Engadine Dragons. Fondly remembered.
