Leading Associations Unite to Pursue Private Land Mobile Broadband

Jointly with the American Petroleum Institute (API) and the Utilities Telecom Council (UTC), EWA has announced that it is seeking the FCC’s assistance to create a Private Land Mobile (PLM) Broadband network at 900 MHz that would be established on a 3/3 MHz contiguous allocation of spectrum that would enable LTE technology. In a formal letter to the FCC, the associations emphasized the critical need of private land mobile users to be able to access broadband spectrum dedicated to their unique requirements.  MORE

EWA Employee Departs after "44 Years of Dedicated Service"

Andre Coté, Senior Vice President, EWA, is leaving the organization this month after 44 years. Andre started with the organization, then known as SIRSA, after serving in communications with the U.S. Navy. In commenting on Andre’s departure, Mark Crosby, President and CEO, EWA, stated “Andre’s career has witnessed it all, from the days before computers, fax machines, email and the Internet, before electronic batching filings, back when there was carbon paper and a postage machine, maps and paper licenses.  MORE

LMCC Preparing Rulemaking on 800 MHz Spectrum Access Procedures

The LMCC membership has approved filing a Petition for Rulemaking proposing to limit eligibility to 800 MHz Expansion Band and Guard Band channels to incumbents already operating systems within their geographic areas for six months, after which all channels would be available to all categories of 800 MHz eligible applicants.  MORE

Dynamic Spectrum Alliance Supports FCC Spectrum Sharing Proposals 

In their first FCC filing since the alliance’s organization, Dynamic Spectrum Alliance, a global organization advocating for laws that lead to more efficient and effective use of spectrum, supported the FCC’s efforts to increase access to unused radio frequencies in the 600 MHz, 3.5 GHz, and 5GHz bands.  MORE

FCC Seeks Comments on MRA Band Edge Waiver

The FCC is seeking comments on a waiver request by Mobile Relay Associates (MRA) to utilize three 4k 450 MHz channels that are located within the band edge between Part 90 I/B Pool and Broadcast Auxiliary Service (BAS) spectrum. The Public Notice requests comment on whether MRA’s use of 4 kHz bandwidth equipment in this “guardband” spectrum create any harmful interference to frequencies on either side of the requested frequencies and specifically invites comment from parties whose operations could be impacted. EWA will be filing comments in support of this assignment for I/B use.

Wideband 150-470 MHz Operations No Longer Permitted Without Waiver

In a Public Notice providing “additional guidance” regarding the post-narrowbanding world, the FCC announced that, effective April 1, 2014, applications to renew 150-174 and 421-470 MHz applications that list only wideband emission designators will be dismissed unless the applicant proposes to replace wideband with narrowband designators or the applicant certifies that its wideband equipment meets the narrowband efficiency standard.  MORE

FCC Chairman Appoints LeBlanc as Acting Chief for Enforcement Bureau

Travis LeBlanc has been appointed acting Chief of the Enforcement Bureau by FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler. Le Blanc served as the top deputy and senior advisor to California’s Attorney General Kamala Harris and was responsible for complex litigation and policy matters ranging from technology regulation, telecommunications, high-tech crime, cyber-security and privacy.  MORE

Selling Unauthorized Radio Frequency Devices

Redman CB Stop, a CB and amateur radio and accessories retailer was issued a citation for marketing unauthorized radio equipment not certified in accordance with the Commission’s technical standards, and for selling external radio frequency power amplifiers capable of operation in the CB band. Redman CB Stop has 30 days to challenge the citation and may be subject to fines of up to $16,000 for each violation or for each day for continued violations following receipt of the citation.
