Migratory Thoughts by Rashaun Rucker is the cover art for INSIGHT: Alchemy

I was fortunate to first see Rashuan's work visiting the Red Bull House of Art Detroit and was blown away at his talent. I went back moments after leaving to see it again and happened to run into him there. We struck up a great conversation around art, his art and the role art plays in society. Fast forward several months and here we are presenting his work to more potential fans and supporters. The piece above is part of his series "Fly Away" which we will feature in INSIGHT: Alchemy. You can read a brief excerpt from Rashaun below. Also, see more of his work on his website and Instagram.

"My latest work is a series of drawings titled “Fly Away.” It compares the life of some thing many of us see everyday -- the rock pigeon -- to the identity and, in many ways, the stereotype of black men in America.

Europeans introduced pigeons to North America in the 1600s. The rock pigeon is a bird that doesn't migrate but is considered a strong flyer and is commonly found in American cities, populating the streets. National Geographic described the rock pigeon as being gregarious and forming large flocks; it feeds on handouts and grains during the day. The pigeon, when taken away from its environment, usually returns home.

These images I’ve created speak to black men and why we often don't fly (achieve) even though we have the ability to go far beyond our circumstances. It paints a picture of how the somewhat negative environment becomes a comfortable condition and not simply a momentary station in life."

We want to include your art in this issue as well! Alchemy: could be focused on transformation/transformative process that either work or fail. The creation of something from nothing, triumphing with the hand you've been dealt, etc.
