'Adopt' a grad student for a holiday

Our graduate student population is quite diverse with students from all over the United States and other countries. For those who can't get home, the holidays can be a lonely time. This year we are asking families to 'adopt' graduate students who are unable be home. If you are interested in hosting, please e-mail us with your name and contact information and the number of students you can host.

For those interested in experiencing the holidays American-style, e-mail gradstudentlife@fairfield.edu with your name and contact information and what holiday(s) you are interested in spending time with a host family.

We will then match up host families with interested graduate students.

Diversity Day at Mohegan Elementary

Contributed by Brittany Tasi
Dr. Paula Gill Lopez and 35 student volunteers from the University's School Psychology Graduate Program will be coordinating the 7th annual Diversity Day at Mohegan Elementary School on Friday, December 2.

This event teaches fourth grade students what it means to be 'different.' The fourth graders rotate to stations run by Fairfield students and parent volunteers to see what it's like to not be able to use parts of their body, to have issues with hearing or vision, or to experience social difficulties. At the end of each rotation, the station captain sums up the primary lesson and asks concluding questions. The students are also exposed to a lesson about diversity which helps to introduce and wrap up the primary take-away points from the stations.

School Psychology and other students are welcome to volunteer. It is an opportunity for School Psychology students to get hands-on experience prior to other practicum/internship experiences while supporting members of the community. For additional information, e-mail Dr. Gill Lopez.
