February 2013

In This Issue

From one fellow grad student to another...

It is already February in the new year. Before long we'll be celebrating the end of courses for the semester and a new crop of graduates will be off to set the world aflame. As graduate students we often forget how important it is to schedule time with friends or to relax and have fun. So I propose this year we enjoy ourselves and meet new people. The Office of Graduate Student Life is going to make that process easier by providing fun, inexpensive events that are friend- and family-friendly. Please consider adding events such as the Career Services: Tips and Tools to Job Search or a Free Friday Movie to your calendar. And, don't forget our springtime wine tasting or Graduate Student Service Awards Dinner. For information on these and other events please visit our website.

Graduate Student Assembly (GSA) meeting highlights

The Graduate Student Assembly (GSA) held its first meeting of the semester. We thank those who attended because your insight and suggestions are important to us. For those unable to attend, here are the highlights.

  • The President's office has requested a committee of graduate students meet in early March to select a "teacher of the year" from the graduate school faculty. We need at least six people and would like to have as many schools represented as possible. If you are interested, please contact the Office of Graduate Student Life for more information.
  • Graduate students agreed that events shortly after each semester begins could be a nice way to meet fellow graduate students. Events such as wine and cheese parties, sporting events, and orientations were suggested.
  • The Fall Graduate Student Orientation will continue, and we should encourage all students to attend to have an opportunity to meet each other and find out more about campus.
  • There was a strong desire to see more career oriented events on campus, such as the upcoming job search event. Suggestions included networking events with alumni and local companies and human resources representatives to help graduates with employment.
  • The next meeting is Saturday, May 4 at 9 a.m. in the Barone Campus Center Mezzanine. All are welcome.
  • Those interested in volunteering for the Graduate Student Awards dinner, "Teacher of the year" committee or Fall Orientation should e-mail the Office of Graduate Student Life.

Graduate Student Awards nominations now accepted

It's that time of the year again! Spring is almost here and with it, the annual Graduate Student Service Awards dinner. The Graduate Student Service Awards are given annually to one member of each of the graduate schools who have demonstrated exceptional service, dedication, and commitment to a volunteer or service program in their local community.

We are now accepting nominations for the Service Awards. Nominations may be submitted online. Self nominations are also accepted.

Awards in each of the graduate schools will be presented at the third Annual Graduate Student Service Awards Dinner on Friday April 26, 2013 in the Dolan School of Business Dining Room. Nominations are due March 1.

Critics agree: Fairfield's two Colleen Browning exhibitions are ones to see

The critics have spoken! And they agree that a pair of Fairfield University art exhibitions exploring the career of artist Colleen Browning (1918-2003) and running concurrently at the Bellarmine Museum of Art and the Thomas J. Walsh Art Gallery provide important viewing. Both are on view through Sunday, March 24 and feature works from an artist who played a significant role in America's contemporary realist movement in the years after 1950.

Bellarmine Museum and Walsh Gallery Viewing Hours:
The Bellarmine Museum of Art is open Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. when the University is in session and is located on the lower level of Bellarmine Hall. Admission is free. Call (203) 254-4046, or visit the website.

The Thomas J. Walsh Art Gallery is located in the Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts. Hours are Tuesday-Saturday: 11 a.m.-5 p.m.; Sunday: 12 p.m.-4 p.m. (Closed Monday). The Gallery is also open one hour prior to curtain and during intermission of Quick Center performances and closed at any time the Quick Center is closed for the holidays. Visit the website.
