Graduation Edition - May 2012

In This Issue

Summer Fun has Begun!

Finals have concluded, grades are just about turned in and all around campus the sighs of relief from graduate students can be heard. We know this semester was packed with courses, papers and projects, not to mention events, and of course, graduation! We in the Office of Graduate Student Life have enjoyed the events of this past year including the Global Initiative Dinner, the GSA meetings where so many great ideas were shared, the Winter Wine Tasting and the Graduate Student Service awards, just to name a few. We try to offer a variety of events and next year will certainly be no different! The Office of Graduate Student Life is open to hearing your suggestions for events.

Over the summer we will begin planning our fall calendar and will host the second Graduate Student Orientation on Saturday, August 25. If you are interested in helping out and welcoming new students, we'd love the support!

The Office of Graduate Life looks to increase student awareness of our presence and meet your needs. Be sure to check our webpage and social media such as Facebook and Twitter for updates. If you have feedback, we encourage you to attend the Graduate Student Assembly meetings and of course e-mail or call us!

We, in the Office of Graduate Student Life, would like to take this opportunity to once again congratulate each of the award winners and recognize their accomplishments!

Mentoring Opportunities

Are you a graduate student interested in giving back to the Fairfield University community? Are you looking for a way to become more involved? One of the major ways we support our students in their own growth and development is through mentoring. Fairfield mentors accompany our students as they journey through their college experiences. Mentors are there to be present, create a safe and trusting space, facilitate 'real' discussions and reflections among students, and offer their own perspectives and struggles about living an authentic life. Read more.

The Graduate Student Assembly

The Office of Graduate Student Life's goal over the past couple years has been to increase graduate student services and awareness. Part of that initiative was the formation of the Graduate Student Leadership Council. As you may know, every graduate student is considered a member of the Graduate Student Assembly. All graduate students are encouraged to attend GSA meetings, graduate student events, and receive discounts on select tickets at the Regina A. Quick Center.

To help plan and coordinate several events, the Office of Graduate Student Life relies on the GSA Leadership Council. These are supportive individuals who spread the word of upcoming events, generate new ideas, and bring forth concerns of the graduate student population. We would like at least two individuals from each school and ideally an individual from each program. Our office exists to support graduate students and to help graduate students be heard, but we need your voices. If you are interested in being on the Leadership Council or have questions please e-mail us or call us at (203) 254-4000 ext. 2747.

Library Corner

The library is more than books and media! Visit the library in person or online.

Stag Print - Did you know that students get $25 added to their Stag Cards in the fall or spring semesters to print and make copies in the library? Save your ink and toner! Use the library instead. Learn more about StagPrint.

Text a librarian - Did you know you can text a Librarian for research help? The new text message number is (203) 295-7542. So add the Library to your address book. This service is usually available 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., when the library is open.

Database name change - Several of our Proquest Library databases have undergone a name change in order to make the discovery process more uniform. For example, Proquest Education Journals is now Education Journals and Proquest Psychology Journals is now Psychology Journals. So if you can't find a Proquest database under the "Proquest" title, try the shortened version.

Refworks news - What is Refworks? RefWorks is citation manager software that keeps track of the sources you are using for your research and your own notes about them. To learn more, visit our Refworks guide.

Color printing: We now have color printing in the Info Commons area of the Library. Cost is 25 cents per page.

FILMS on demand - Want to make your presentations pop? Check out this great database of academic videos.

Group room reservations - Do you need a place to study with a group? Work on a project? Book a room at the Library! Now you can book a room online too! Go to the Library homepage and click on the Reserve a Room in the Library to reserve a group study room.

Research Guides and Help: Best Bets for Starting Your Research Guides are here to help. Check out Best Bets Guides in your discipline.

Research Assistance is available by phone (203) 254-4000, ext. 2178, e-mail, by IM to fairfieldulib, or by visiting the Reference Desk. The library recommends individual appointments for those returning to research after a hiatus. Schedule an appointment.
