Ask A Fiber Expert

Why is it so important to set the IOR precisely on an OTDR?

Remember in High School math class when we were taught that distance traveled is a factor of the speed multiplied by the time traveled? Well, the distance measurement on an OTDR uses basically the same calculation.

The unit measures the time it takes a pulse of light to travel out and return to the source. The speed aspect of the calculation is Index of Refraction (IOR). IOR is a measure of the speed of light through any medium, compared against the speed of light in a vacuum.

If the IOR (speed) is incorrectly set, the distance measurement of the fiber under test could be off by hundreds of meters. In an outage situation, this error could cost valuable time in identifying the fault.

*Fiber Optic* Line Installation - Request for Proposal

A great opportunity for FiberOptic.com customers...

PUD raises rates to pay for *fiber optics*

I understand no one wants their rates increased, but this is a project which will be funded by a Federal Tax dollars. You already gave them the money, I think it's a wise choice to spend just a little more to receive some benefit from taxes you've already paid. What's the other option? Someone else gets to benefit from your tax dollars.... Tough call, but I think it's a smart move.
