Creamy Pumpkin Soup
Looking for something different to make with pumpkin this holiday season? Try this soup topped with sour cream and bacon!
pumpkin soup

1 medium onion, chopped
2 Tbsp. butter or margarine
2 14.5 oz cans chicken broth
2 cups sliced peeled potatoes
2 cups canned cooked pumpkin
2 cups milk
1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. pepper
1 cup sour cream
1 Tbsp. chopped fresh parsley
3 bacon strips, cooked and crumbled

In a large saucepan, saute onion in butter until tender. Add the broth, potatoes and pumpkin; cook until the potatoes are tender, about 15 minutes. Remove from heat; cool. Puree half of the mixture at a time in a blender or food processor until smooth; return all to the pan. Add the milk, nutmeg, salt and pepper; heat through. Meanwhile, combine the sour cream and parsley. Spoon soup into bowls; top each with a dollop of sour cream and sprinkle with bacon.

Phone System Test Wednesday Nov. 30
on phone

We will be conducting a test drill of our emergency backup phone system, on Wednesday November 30, around the noon hour. You will still be able to reach us at our regular phone numbers, but will hear an automated greeting explaining that we are operating on our backup system. You will be given options to choose the person or department you need to speak to. Thank you for your patience while we conduct this test.

Don't Forget Your Carbon Monoxide Alarms
alarm

Each year, more than 400 Americans die from unintentional carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning, more than 20,000 visit the emergency room and more than 4,000 are hospitalized due to CO poisoning. All people and animals are at risk for CO poisoning, although certain groups - unborn babies, infants and people with chronic heart disease, anemia or respiratory problems - are more susceptible to its effects. Poisonings are on the rise due in part to economic reasons. With a stressed economy and high unemployment, more families face utility shutoffs and turn to other sources of heat that can carry a heavy risk of CO poisoning.

DO have your heating system, water heater and any other gas, oil, or coal burning appliances serviced by a qualified technician every year.
DO seek prompt medical attention if you suspect CO poisoning and are feeling dizzy, light-headed, or nauseous.
DON'T use a generator, charcoal grill, camp stove, or other gasoline or charcoal-burning device inside your home, basement or garage or near a window.
DON'T burn anything in a stove or fireplace that isn't vented.
DO install a battery-operated CO detector in your home and check or replace the battery when you change the time on your clocks each spring and fall. If the detector sounds, leave your home immediately and call 911. Here are some more tips to consider concerning these important alarms.

Winterization Tips for Your Car
car
If you have a classic or summer-use vehicle, it's time to put those cars to sleep for the Northwest winter.

Top off your levels:
Fill your gas tank and add a fuel preservative. The full tank keeps out moisture, and the preservative keeps the gas from breaking down. Take one last drive to circulate the preservative. Make sure your antifreeze is fresh and topped off. To avoid a nasty sludge in the spring, change the oil.

Take preventative measures:
Give your car a good wash and wax to protect the paint. Protect the chrome with wax or paint sealant. Over-inflate tires to avoid flat spotting, or jack up the car to take pressure off the tires. Put a battery manager on your car. To prevent rodents nesting in an engine compartment, try a rodent repellent under the hood - just remember to remove it before starting up.

Manager's Corner - A Few of Our Favorite Things
As winter draws near, our Administrative Department (Receptionist Bev Anderson; Administrative Assistants Holly Sproul, Kaci Rexilius, and Taunja Murphy; and Operations Supervisor Melanie Fiegl) shares some of their favorite things about the season.

Favorite Holiday Movie:
Kaci - "Home Alone"
Taunja - "Die Hard" and "The Year Without a Santa Claus"
Melanie - "Elf" and "Love, Actually"
Holly - "A Christmas Story" is my favorite because it's my family. My dad is always thinking he 'wins the big prize' but my mom thinks otherwise. Once the turkey was frozen because the oven didn't get turned on, so we ended up having an hors d'oeuvre dinner.

Favorite Holiday Food:
Taunja - Pumpkin pie and eggnog
Kaci - Muddy Buddy Mix
Holly - Leftovers. Our family started a tradition of "Franksgiving" (Friday Thanksgiving) with all the leftovers and turkey/stuffing/cranberry sandwiches.
Melanie - Scandinavian treats from my grandparents and mom: Lefse (thin potato tortillas), Swedish meatballs, and Rosettes (crispy cookie/pastries)

Favorite Holiday music:
Holly - Hark of the Bells
Kaci - The Chanukah Song by Adam Sandler and anything Trans-Siberian Orchestra
Taunja - Jingle Bell Rock and the Snow Miser song from The Year Without a Santa Claus
Bev - My Christmas music plays the whole month of December, both at home and in my car, and gets me in the mood to start shopping and decorating.

Favorite Thing To Do on a Snow Day:
Kaci - read and watch Christmas movies
Holly - snuggle up on the couch with my dog and a cup of hot cocoa
Melanie - shop online
Taunja - Definitely sledding! I loved sledding in Sprague growing up. Despite hitting all the rocks and bushes while sledding down hills, it was always a great time.

Evergreen (Christmas Tree) scent, or Food (cinnamon, vanilla) scent?
Melanie - all!
Taunja - I love food scents. I always buy vanilla candles and sometimes chocolate chip cookie scented candles around the holidays.
Holly - Food scents. When I was younger, our family purchased a fake tree and tried the smelly tree spray. It didn't work and tainted my real tree memories.
Kaci - Evergreen tree. It reminds me of growing up in the country with the trees brushed with snow.

Someplace you would love to visit in winter:
Kaci - New York City
Melanie - New York City
Holly - Alaska to see the Northern Lights, or Hawaii
Taunja - I love going to Fairmont Hot Springs in Montana. It's great swimming in a heated pool after a snowball fight.

New Traditions:
Bev - I've started a tradition where each year I try to find an ornament for each of my grandkids with their name on it for my tree.
Holly - A new tradition for my present to myself is going to a Seahawks game.

Closing words from Bev - "Happy Holidays to all!"
