Greetings Friends,

Have you ever looked at an artists' work and instantly been able to identify where they get their inspiration?

For some, it is obvious that they were nestled among the soft dunes of the coastline; settled deep in the evergreen forest beside a cascading waterfall; or sitting among other patrons to a rainbow colored market.

Not all have the opportunity to visit places that provide a vast array of inspiration. However, regardless of where, everyone can be inspired by their surroundings. Sometimes all it takes is a visual vacation, to be able to come back and really 'see' and be aware of our everyday surroundings.

Here are a few tips:

  1. Spend some time away from your everyday environment - at least a couple of days.
  2. Have a sketch book handy to record thoughts, ideas and feelings.
  3. Take a tour with your senses: touch the items that surround you (be it the fibrous leaves of the plants or solid cold surface of marble buildings); close your eyes, tune into the sounds and smells; and if possible take off your shoes and really feel the the ground beneath you.
  4. Observe your environment at all times of day and all kinds of weather. Some suggest making a square from a sturdy paper or use your hands to make a small square to help focus.
  5. Then begin capturing the amazing inspiration that is all around you!

These techniques are also very helpful for when you are able to visit somewhere that provides instant inspiration. Just be ready for some odd looks or comments from bystanders!

I hope you have many happy visual vacations.

Sincerely,

Meghan B Minton
