Dear Friends,

Now that we have become aware of our opportunities of inspiration, always carrying our sketchbooks and pencils, and exploring new mediums and techniques; let’s take time to sit back and take a break.

Put down your paintbrush and visit your local art gallery, museum, or center. Why you might wonder? Any good artist knows that we can learn a lot and even become inspired by VIEWING the works of others.

The Art of VIEWING is very simple. You will need:

  1. TIME, and
  2. an OPEN MIND.

Art appeals to most of us through our senses. Allow yourself enough time to absorb the work. If it doesn’t evoke some kind of emotion move on. But if it does, try to figure out what it is about this particular work that you identify with.

Keep an open mind. Not all emotions you experience will be pleasant. Some artists pride themselves on evoking very strong emotions. Be it disdain or “a third grader could have done that” attitude.

Try to view the piece without judgment or criticism. Think about what has created this emotion – medium, techniques, subject, or color. Take some time to examine your own emotions in the presence of the painting.

Then go back to your studio and view your own pieces and ask yourself do they evoke some kind of emotion? If not you have just spent valuable time learning ways in which you can enrich your own works to do so.

Keep creating,

Meghan B Minton

Executive Director
