Greetings Friends, May has been a busy month here at Florence. Susan Crouch's workshop was well attended and everyone enjoyed themselves, including one mother-daughter duo who took the workshop together.
"It is an experience that I will cherish for the rest of my life; and I can't wait to come back!"
Jayne Porter
We also hosted a week long writing retreat with Table Rock Writing Studio, special guest Lee Smith. Twenty-five participants enjoyed the opportunity to write and socialize with other accomplished writers. Listing Location, Peaceful Environment and Intimacy with the Mountains as the top three things they enjoyed most.
And our first "Paint Out" at Mt Jefferson State Natural Area was a success. The weather was beautiful and those in attendance were truly a delight! Three artists, including myself had never painted outside on location - we were all pleasantly surprised how much we enjoyed painting on location. The next paint out is scheduled for June 25th - I hope to see you there.
Looking forward to June, we have a wonderful line-up of workshops from oil painting, drawing, and basket weaving to landscapes. And one cannot forget our first ever "Fiber Arts Heritage Craft Week", June 12-18.
The week begins on June 12th, from 1-4pm, with an afternoon of demonstrations from the Blue Ridge Fiber Guild~ watch the whole process from sheep sheering to tapestry. There will be something for the whole family to enjoy.
Then you can attend a workshop throughout the week to learn how to spin, weave on a loom, knit, hook a rug, or felt a hat. (Click here to see a complete schedule)
The week-long celebration will culminate on Saturday, from 10 am - 1pm, at our Fibers Market. Here you can view the projects completed in the workshops and have an opportunity to purchase one-of-a-kind handmade fiber items from our local artists.
If you are in and around the Glendale Springs area, please stop in, I would love the opportunity to visit and show you the current paintings we have on display in the Florence Thomas Gallery. Hours are Monday - Friday 9am - 4pm.
Sincerely,Meghan B Minton Executive Director

Special Mention |
Recently, Dr. C. E. Miller, a close painting friend of the late Florence Thomas passed.
We extend our sympathy and condolences to his wife, Melba Miller. Who has been instrumental in the establishment of the art school and spent years, along with her husband, traversing the eastern seaboard painting with Florence Thomas.
May their spirit and love for painting, as well as their fellow man, continue through the future generations of artists here
at the Florence Thomas Art School.

Did you know Florence has a
Student Loyalty Program? |
Students of Florence Thomas Art School return year after year for three reasons:
1. Quality instruction
2. Individual attention (small class size)
3. Creative environment
Now there is one more reason:
Students who attend 9 full days of workshops in a three-season period get one day FREE!
The program is retro-active to our first season of classes in 2008.
This is a way to say "Thank You" for your continued support! |
