A Note from Gary

Hi Subscriber,

Right off the top here, I have to make a sincere apology to a person I haven’t even met. Here’s the story:

I put the word out for a Joomla operator to work on my website and somebody put me in touch with a fellow called Gino Lancaster Well I emailed Gino and he replied saying he would get onto somebody and have them make contact.from Red Planet design www.redplanetdesign.com.au The word was, he was an efficient operator who owns a successful company and he may know of somebody.

The impressive part was that the person who had referred Gino had only heard of this chap and his reputation, from what many others were saying. He had not actually done any work with them. I became frustrated when I didn’t hear anything for about 1.5 weeks and out of the blue Gino called me to apologise for forgetting about our conversation. He assured me he would get immediately onto this and call me in a few days to see how I went.

About 3 days later I had heard nothing again, so I emailed the referrer to let them know Gino had let me down again and I forwarded my disappointment to Gino’s email as well. About an hour after doing this I received a long email from Gino, defending himself and his reputation, explaining the lengths he had gone to arrange something for me.

Now that we’ve had our giggle at the awkward position I found myself in, I of course lamented over other (dignified) ways I could / should have handled this situation. Clearly with a little more tact is the obvious answer, although after the first delay, there was a kind of expectation that had been created. Could I forward an email suggesting he may have forgotten me again? Should I have made contact with another expert immediately and bypassed the middle man?

I made a sincere effort and called Gino direct to apologise. He accepted thankfully and nothing more eventuated. This is great learning content for me personally though. I thank Gino for being involved and helping me with this. Sure I consider watch my communication style.

The message for readers (and the writer) though, is the passion which Gino has about his own reputation and that of his businesses. I’m quite sure his response was not delivered from a position of competition between business owners but more from the pride in what he has created and the importance to him that his clients think nothing but Quality of his Brand.

I applaud his response to this situation and understand fully why his name and company reputation precede him. Remember he was referred by someone who doesn’t know him, has done work for him or got work done. But its his name that was suggested by many people when we asked.

Credit Gino

Best regards,

Good news story

After doing my standard pool exercise session last Sunday morning, I went for a bite to eat at the Coffee Club at Springwood in Brisbane. When I walked in alone I thought it might be hard to get a seat, it was so busy. Quickly a young guy greeted me and said, “Sir we have about a 45 minute wait on food if you have come for breakfast. We have just had 2 large groups arrive, but you are welcome to stay for a coffee if you wish I’ll just grab you a table”. I was able to make a decision before even sitting down.

Their coffee is a favourite of mine so I decided to stay and was in no hurry, so I order breakfast as well. The only table they had was in the express lane where all the service people were busily delivering to tables.

Now this place was packed. I was reading a book when I realised it was more fun watching this smooth operation unfold. There were people everywhere at tables enjoying breakfast. The wait staff ran like a finely tuned machine. No obvious hangovers, no distain for the customers, the whole group was impressive.

Man, haven’t I had a wonderful time delivering the Y.E.S. Program at John Paul college and Loganlea High school over the past 4 weeks. The kids participating have received some amazing insights into business, life, people and hopefully what they could achieve. They are enthralled when asked to consider what challenges an everyday business experiences, but we also visit the results of what a well-run business could have for them and their family.

The groups are asked to propose a business idea of their own, generally in a group of 3 or 4. We take them through what funds they may be able to raise, what skills they have, what the market might need and the structure of their business. Then we focus on the numbers any business deals with daily like, expenses, sales, profit, turnover, customer base, taxes and others. But we don’t go through the ways to prepare these numbers. This is Entrepreneur training. They will make choices on what skills they will continue to study at UNI but they can’t know everything. So we teach them how to make decisions based on other information.

      Recommendations

I can recommend strongly an ABC program 8pm every Monday night. It’s called Australia story and it’s a documentary that showcases some extraordinary Australians and their story.

A very inspiring program that gives the viewer an opportunity to see special people do special things. Follow this link and you can view previous episodes if you don’t already watch. http://www.abc.net.au/austory/specials.htm.

Your Make A Difference Challenge

THIS ISSUES M.A.D. CHALLENGE:

What if you expressed a value tip, inspiring quote or just a very friendly caring comment at the end of your phone message, if someone calls your mobile and gets the message bank? Even if you have a work phone I think with a couple of minutes thought you could come up with something positive. I do this myself and I have had many favourable comments from people who don’t hear such a thing.

Yet another way to communicate positively (Make A difference) and few people do it. For instance instead of “hi. You’ve reached Gary; I’m on the phone right now please leave a message and I’ll get back to you. Be different. I could suggest things, but I’m going to leave it to you. Your message will be best thought of from you and by you. NO-ONE does a better job of being you.

Good luck, and if you don’t do this currently, why not do it this week? It can only be good. I will be changing mine this week. Not sure what to, but I will.

Until next time – enjoy great things

Kind regards
