Word from the Wellness Team

With the New Year approaching, many are resolving to make this coming year the year to change bad habits and get healthy. The French Creek Y Wellness Team is ready to help you set attainable goals. Follow these quick guidelines developed by our wellness team, to get started on the right track for the New Year.

1) Set short-term goals first. For example, “My goal for this week is to work out two times.” You will be more likely to achieve smaller, short-term goals than obsessing over the big picture. If you miss a day, don’t fret - try to make it up in the next week. Notice your small achievements. Maybe you didn’t lose a pound, but your pants sure fit better. This is a success!

2) Set long-term goals second. The big picture is important, but don’t lose sight of the steps it takes to get there.

3) Slowly advance your goals. If you haven’t exercised in a while, don’t try to work out two times a day for your first week back. Most likely, you will burn yourself out. This type of mindset can also lead to injury and boredom.

4) Enjoy exercise! Don’t think of exercise as a negative. Try to find something you really enjoy, or find someone to enjoy it with.

5) Seek support. There will be days when you won’t feel like exercising and weeks when you feel you can’t go on. Use a friend or family members to help push and support you. If they won’t support your goals, inquire about a personal trainer. Personal trainers are here to help you reach your goals, to give you support, motivate you, and to keep you on the right track.

6) Variety is crucial. Try not to get caught on the same machine or in the same class every time you exercise. Instead, vary your workouts. For example, swim on Monday, walk on Wednesday, lift weights on Thursday, and play basketball with your kids on Saturday. Take a new class every week. Variety will help cure boredom and monotony.

7) Try not to think of your goals as a ‘New Year’s Resolution.’ New Year’s resolutions come and go every year, while healthy habits can and should last a lifetime.

Most importantly, remember you are not alone. The Y staff is here to help and give you the support you need. Schedule a Wellness Coaching appointment and let one of our wellness team members help you outline your health and wellness goals.

Changes are coming in our Child Care Program

This coming year will bring a number of very exciting changes to our entire Child Care department. These changes, like the addition of preschool in fall of 2011, will allow for us to better serve the needs of the communities here in Lorain County.

Preschool and pre-kindergarten have been an amazing success so far. Our program is now licensed through the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services and has earned a Star 1 rating for Step Up to Quality, a statewide quality initiative. These improvements, along with a new standardized curriculum and dedicated staff have allowed for the program to grow and prepare our students for a lifetime love of learning. We are open to add new students to the program at any time.

Summer Camp will be here before we know it. Some changes have been made to the registration dates and process for 2012. Our website, www.clevelandymca.org, is always up-to-date with the most current information on space availability, registration dates and forms. Information is available under the "Camp" tab.

If you have any questions about Child Care programs, please consult the website or contact Charity Butch, Child Care Director for the French Creek Family YMCA at cbutch@clevelandymca.org.

Do you hear what I hear? Exciting News in our Youth Sports Department

This past year has been an exciting and productive one for the Youth Sports department. We kicked off the Fall Basketball League with a record breaking total of 212 youth members. This success has been accomplished because of the quality, commitment and communication throughout our program in collaboration with our volunteers.

The French Creek Family YMCA basketball league relies on five staff members and more than 50 volunteer coaches, scorekeepers, and officials. The dedication of these volunteers has made our program successful in developing skills, self-confidence, teamwork, and individual accomplishments. The French Creek Family YMCA would like to thank all that have proven to be dedicated to the continued improvements of our community and youth development.  Thank you for a great season.

But wait: There’s more great Sports and Y Arts programs yet to come! As the weather gets colder, come inside and join one of these great programs as we get ready to launch our Winter I Youth programs, including basketball, volleyball, indoor soccer, floor hockey, arts programs, dance and more. Registration for these programs begins in December. If your time is limited, or you don’t know which program your child will like, consider joining one of our weekly Winter Sports Camp or Performing Arts Camps during the Winter School Break. If interested in any of these programs, please contact Jessica Bailey at jbailey@clevelandymca.org. We look forward to having you join our French Creek Y family! You can also register online for these programs by clicking “Online Registration” on the Membership tab.

Monic Hill

It is my pleasure to be writing to you this holiday season. For those who are new to the French Creek Y, on behalf of the Board, the staff and the entire YMCA family, welcome to our Y community! We sincerely hope you will find your experience at the Y meaningful and memorable.

It continues to be a busy and successful year, full of fun and excitement. I am sure many of you met our Day/Sport Campers (over 150 of them) and shared their energy and joy as they moved from activity to activity. In wrapping up our summer and fall programming and preparing for the winter, we have more equally fun and exciting activities in which you and your family can participate. We hope to see you at these upcoming events.

Recently, the French Creek Y leadership team determinedly brainstormed ideas to improve your experience at the Y. It is our hope to continue to make you and your families feel welcome and in the right place by serving you and whatever needs you may have.

The staff at the French Creek Family YMCA has committed to making our services more convenient, connecting with you more and being more focused on members. We will be actively engaged in our community, provide high-quality programming, select and develop our staff to ensure high standards of service, invest in our facility, and increase our fund-raising effort so we can keep our services affordable and continue to provide scholarships.

We constantly look at ways to improve our service delivery. Please feel free to contact me or any one of our leadership staff to share your ideas.

Again, thank you so much for your continued support. I wish you and your family  the very best as we head into the winter and the holiday season.
