Tyrone Wrice, founder of Guide Runners, LLC, is a new face around the Downtown YMCA. Mr. Wrice is a volunteer with the Model UN program, which operates from the Teen Center.
In his role as the founder of Guide Runners, Mr. Wrice and his team of volunteer runners offer encouragement to visually challenged individuals and groups seeking to begin/return to running as an outlet and form of recreational development. Youth member Profile: Devonta Edwards
There is an old African proverb which states, “It takes a village to raise a child”. It was in our little part of the village where I met 14-year-old Devonta Edmonds. He is an amazing, mature young man who aspires to become a general contractor. Devonta enjoys boxing and playing handball at the YMCA.
Recently, the handball players at our branch have embraced Devonta’s talent and passion for the game by coaching and providing gloves, t-shirts, goggles, and balls. |

Fall Programs are beginning
The new Fall 2011 Downtown Program Guide is available! Download the guide HERE!
New for Fall 2011:
IRON KIDS - Each class introduces kids ages 8-12 to a new fitness component, including strength, flexibility, endurance, and agility. Participants learn the YMCA core values as they are guided through the creation of their own workouts.
IRON TEENS - Do you want to build strength and endurance for sports? Do you just want to sculpt your physique? Our trainer will work with you on our strength and cardio equipment, making this small group personal training class suitable for all teen guys and girls, no matter what your experience.
H.I.I.T. - High-intensity interval training or sprint interval training is an exercise strategy that is intended to improve performance with short training sessions. H.I.I.T. is intended to provide the maximum benefit with minimal time investment. Our H.I.I.T. work-out sessions Generally last 25 minutes, and are structured with a brief warm-up
period, followed by altering between high intensity and moderate intensity exercise, then concluded by a brief cool-down.
H.I.I.T. FULL THROTTLE - High Intensity Interval Training isn’t a new workout
methodology; top athletes have been using H.I.I.T. training for years. H.I.I.T. is intended to provide the maximum benefit with minimal time investment. We have added an athletic training component to our 50-minute session. You will find all of the H.I.I.T. principles found in the 25-minute session, but prepare to be pushed to the limit. 50-minute sessions are structured with a longer warm-up period, followed by altering between high intensity and moderate intensity exercise, which include but is not limited to jump training and plyometrics.
TRIAD – Like Hit Intensity Interval Training, TRIAD incorporates 30 minutes of cycling, 30 minutes of strength training, 30 minutes of core training (Ab-solute Onslaught)

Do you know what the 40 Developmental Assets are?
The 40 Developmental Assets are identified as the building blocks of healthy development in children. The presence of the 40 Developmental Assets improve the likelihood that a child(ren) will grow up healthy, caring, and responsible. Asset categories include community and family support, youth empowerment and community service, constructive use of time, a commitment to learning, self-esteem and positive values like honesty, caring, respect, and responsibility.
All YMCA programs are built with the 40 Developmental Assets in mind. If you would like to see a detailed list of the 40 Developmental Assets or to learn more about them, please speak with any Downtown YMCA staff member. |

Can you believe it? Another school year is beginning. In only days, my 6-year-old son Khari, my “baby boy” who it seems was crawling just days ago, will begin first grade.
Fall is quite the season of new beginnings. The children at the Downtown YMCA will also be returning to school this fall. Fortunately for them, the Downtown Teen Center is available for after school activities.
This year, kids at the Downtown Y will continue to get healthy afterschool snacks, participate in swimming and sports activities, play video games, get tutoring services, visit professional work sites, and more.
The Y is for youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility, and every program Downtown reflects this mission. Saturdays during the school year transform the Downtown YMCA into an “education center” with more than 200 youth from the city of Cleveland converging to get the skills they need to attend college. These youth are enrolled in the Y-Achievers Program, which pairs them with mentors from area companies that value the development of local talent and support their employees’ volunteer efforts to help young people.
In our quest to meet the needs of our community, we rely on our members and volunteers. Individuals and businesses have assisted us in collecting school supplies which we plan to distribute to many children that might otherwise begin school unprepared.
This fall, our team of personal trainers will participate in trainings and certifications to improve the quality of personal training. I recommend that our new and old members take advantage of the “personal trainer packages” that will be offered at a discount for sessions with these highly qualified individuals. The smartest members are aware that preparation now will pave the way for the holiday season quickly approaching. Allow our staff to help you.> |
