Fall 2011 Newsletter

MEMBER PROFILE: Monte Cox

Hi, my name is Monte Cox, and I want to talk with you about the West Shore Family YMCA. I previously had a membership at the now closed Brooklyn YMCA. My family and I have had membership at the West Shore Y since 2008. I have always liked the Y for the programs they offer, whether in a group or private.

I personally learned how to swim as an adult, and this added to my fun in the water.  My daughter has also learned to swim at the West Shore Y and is still continuing with her lessons to improve her skills.

I have tried many gyms over the years, but I came back to the Y.  The main reason is the West Shore YMCA is a lot of fun. It is a great place to spend time with the family and make new friends.

STAFF PROFILE: Gabe Williams

Hi, my name is Gabe Williams. I am the new Member Services Representative at the West Shore Family YMCA. I currently live in Lakewood. I graduated from Lakewood High School, class of 2009. In high school I played a multitude of sports including football, basketball, hockey, tennis, golf and track. After high school, I attended The University of Akron where I ran track. I will be attending school for nursing or to become an EMT. Working at the YMCA for the past three months has been a fun experience. I love how all the members and staff are so close to each other are like family. I look forward to meeting everyone!

New Faces

Please help us in welcoming Jim Bodnar as our new Program Coordinator. Jim was formerly Membership Coordinator at the French Creek Family YMCA in Avon. He has been with the Cleveland YMCA since April of 2010. He is currently a student at Cleveland State University and will be graduating with a bachelor's degree in marketing in December. Jim enjoys playing baseball, softball, and hockey. Jim is very excited to join the West Shore YMCA Family.

NFL Flag Football

The new NFL Flag Football Leagues will be coming this fall to the West Shore Family YMCA. Each participant receives their own NFL replica jersey and will use NFL flag belts and NFL flag footballs. This league provides an exciting way to enjoy America’s favorite sport in non-contact, continuous fun while learning lessons in teamwork and sportsmanship.

The league games begin the week of September 10, and will group participating children by the following age groups: 5-6, 7-8, 9-11, 12-14, and 15-17. Games will take place on Saturdays starting at 9 a.m. with the youngest age group, and proceed according to age. Games will be held at West Shore or Lakewood depending on the week. Cost will be $45 for YMCA members and $85 for YMCA program members.

Strong Kids Campaign

The West Shore Family YMCA’s 2011 Strong Kids Campaign is off to a great start. Thanks in part to Energizer’s generous contribution, we have achieved 40% of our $30,000 goal in pledges. The Strong Kids Campaign is our annual fundraiser and the dollars contributed help provide membership and program scholarships for those in need. To ensure that no one is turned away due to their inability to pay, the YMCA of Greater Cleveland has scholarships available to its members and those within the community interested in becoming a member. Membership and program fees are based on a sliding scale with subsidies available for those individuals and families who qualify. In 2010, the West Shore Family Y raised $30,000 which helped underwrite membership and program scholarships for those in need in our area. Your contribution makes a difference and stays in our local community. Thank you to all that have contributed and we look forward to achieving our $30,000 goal again this year with your help. For more information about the Strong Kids Campaign, please contact Sara Adamo, Annual Campaign Coordinator at (216) 263-6858 or sadamo@clevelandymca.org. Or donate online:

Toni Kayumi, Interim Director

Greetings. I just wanted to take a moment to introduce myself.  My name is Toni Kayumi and I have been serving as the Interim Branch Director at the West Shore Family YMCA since July 22.  I am the Vice President of Financial Development and Government Relations for the YMCA of Greater Cleveland and will be filling in at West Shore until a full-time replacement is hired.

Over the past several weeks, I have had the pleasure of meeting with the staff, as well as some members and the branch advisory committee board.  Two topics that have been brought to my attention are concerns over housekeeping and maintenance.  So I thought I’d take this opportunity to tell you about some things we’ve already accomplished and also what our plans are for the near future:

 - A couple of weeks ago, West Shore’s fuzzy cable reception was fixed and our Y-Haven Green Team came in to do a deep cleaning in our locker rooms, restrooms and family changing rooms.

 - Our roof repair should take place in September.  After that work is completed, West Shore is scheduled for exterior and interior paint touch ups, as well as ceiling tile replacement.

 - Our parking lot’s asphalt patching and cement barrier repairs should both be done prior to Labor Day.

 - The pool is scheduled to be closed August 28th-30th for maintenance.

These are just a few of examples of how we hope to improve the surroundings of your membership branch.  If you have any other suggestions on how the West Shore staff and I can better serve you, please feel free to contact me at (216) 263-6844.

Have a blessed day,
Toni Kayumi
