INTRODUCING THE DIABETES PREVENTION PROGRAM

Diabetes is a serious health condition that can lead to heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, high blood pressure, and blindness. Prediabetes is a potentially reversible condition, and 79 million people in the United States are estimated to have it. If you have been diagnosed with prediabetes, or believe you may be at risk for developing the disease, the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program can help you develop a healthier lifestyle and work with you to reduce the risks this condition can pose to your health.

Based on effective efforts researched by the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program will help you learn about and adopt the healthy eating and physical activity habits that have been proven to reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.  Through the 12 month lifestyle change program you will receive support and encouragement from both a trained lifestyle coach and fellow classmates as you develop a plan for improving and maintaining your overall well-being.

A MESSAGE FROM THE BRANCH DIRECTOR

Building a new Y, one member at a time

Spring is springing, birds are singing, flowers are blooming, and life is starting anew.  Here at the Hillcrest Y, we’re also looking forward to building our Y anew, one member at a time.

While we know that our structure is perhaps a bit old and worn, it is what goes on inside that will keep us thriving.  From the moment you walk in our doors, it is our hope that you feel welcome and happy to be here. We anticipate the ideas which come with the fresh eyes of our newer members, and we welcome the thoughts and comments of our most loyal patrons.

We’ve been spending some quality time lately reaching out to local families and businesses to find out what alternate things we can offer to better serve our patrons. One thing we’ve uncovered is a request for more quality programming, which we currently have in the works to be offered soon. Some of these will be fee-based classes with the expectation that they will well-worth their value to you.

SELREC (South Euclid-Lyndhurst Recreation) will also continue to seek out interesting, useful and previously-unseen opportunities for you to educate and nurture yourselves through art, sports, cooking, tours and a whole slew of other offerings.

It is the attitudes of our staff, the reworking of our programming, and your willingness to work with us to keep things fresh that will keep our branch new on the inside.

And someday, we hope to be new on the outside, as well.

Christopher Scheuer

ANNUAL CAMPAIGN UPDATE

Formerly known as the Strong Kids Campaign, our Annual Campaign this year is slated to raise $40,000 for the Hillcrest branch. These monies will go directly toward financial assistance at Hillcrest to help those who would otherwise be unable to fully pay for a membership themselves. Thus far this year, we have raised over $5,500 solely through the donations of our staff members.  Please consider what you may be able to give.

THE LERNER SCHOOL AT THE CLEVELAND CLINIC

Every Friday afternoon you’ll see a smiling, at times boisterous group of young adults working out here at the Hillcrest Family YMCA. These kids range in age from 10-15 years old and they come with their 5-6 staff members with a couple goals in mind: to improve their gross motor skills and to improve their independence.  This particular group of kids is each dealing with some level of autism, and the YMCA has the mission, vision and values that the Lerner School tries to instill in their students.

While here, you’ll see each student carrying a card which shows their individual schedule for them to follow here at the Y. They use the treadmills, stair steppers, bikes and elliptical machines. Their favorite time by far, however, is time in the gymnasium stretching and just having some wide open space to themselves.

Is this regiment working? Well, their parents say they’ve seen several improvements at home, such as:

  • More independence with dressing
  • Increased interest in exercising and being active
  • Improvement with gross motor coordination
  • Maintaining appropriate behavior in the community.

After more than two years of this routine, their teachers and staff have gotten used to hearing, “Are we going to the YMCA this Friday?”
